Reguero and Raz-Guzmán: Molluscs (Mollusca: Gastropoda, Bivalvia, Polyplacophora) of Lagu Gulf of Mexico Science, 2018(1), pp. 32–55 Molluscs (Mollusca: Gastropoda, Bivalvia, Polyplacophora) of Laguna Madre, Tamaulipas, Mexico: Spatial and Temporal Distribution MARTHA REGUERO AND ANDREA RAZ-GUZMA´ N Molluscs were collected in Laguna Madre from seagrass beds, macroalgae, and bare substrates with a Renfro beam net and an otter trawl. The species list includes 96 species and 48 families. Six species are dominant (Bittiolum varium, Costoanachis semiplicata, Brachidontes exustus, Crassostrea virginica, Chione cancellata, and Mulinia lateralis) and 25 are commercially important (e.g., Strombus alatus, Busycoarctum coarctatum, Triplofusus giganteus, Anadara transversa, Noetia ponderosa, Brachidontes exustus, Crassostrea virginica, Argopecten irradians, Argopecten gibbus, Chione cancellata, Mercenaria campechiensis, and Rangia flexuosa). -

ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: PATTERNS IN DIVERSITY AND DISTRIBUTION OF BENTHIC MOLLUSCS ALONG A DEPTH GRADIENT IN THE BAHAMAS Michael Joseph Dowgiallo, Doctor of Philosophy, 2004 Dissertation directed by: Professor Marjorie L. Reaka-Kudla Department of Biology, UMCP Species richness and abundance of benthic bivalve and gastropod molluscs was determined over a depth gradient of 5 - 244 m at Lee Stocking Island, Bahamas by deploying replicate benthic collectors at five sites at 5 m, 14 m, 46 m, 153 m, and 244 m for six months beginning in December 1993. A total of 773 individual molluscs comprising at least 72 taxa were retrieved from the collectors. Analysis of the molluscan fauna that colonized the collectors showed overwhelmingly higher abundance and diversity at the 5 m, 14 m, and 46 m sites as compared to the deeper sites at 153 m and 244 m. Irradiance, temperature, and habitat heterogeneity all declined with depth, coincident with declines in the abundance and diversity of the molluscs. Herbivorous modes of feeding predominated (52%) and carnivorous modes of feeding were common (44%) over the range of depths studied at Lee Stocking Island, but mode of feeding did not change significantly over depth. One bivalve and one gastropod species showed a significant decline in body size with increasing depth. Analysis of data for 960 species of gastropod molluscs from the Western Atlantic Gastropod Database of the Academy of Natural Sciences (ANS) that have ranges including the Bahamas showed a positive correlation between body size of species of gastropods and their geographic ranges. There was also a positive correlation between depth range and the size of the geographic range. -

De forma a cobrir as comunidades de macrofauna existentes no local estudaram-se os macroinvertebrados e os peixes presentes em campanhas de amostragem sazonais que decorreram nas épocas do cacimbo e das chuvas, entre 1996 e 1998. No caso dos macroinvertebrados foram inventariados no local ao longo do período de amostragem 163 taxa distribuídos por 10 filos. -

Mollusc-feeding biology is highly diverse, including omnivorous grazers, herbivores, carnivorous scavengers and predators, and even some parasitic species. Consequently, their digestive system presents many adaptive variations. The digestive tract starting in the mouth consists of the buccal cavity, oesophagus, stomach and intestine ending in the anus. Several types of glands are associated, namely, oral and salivary glands, oesophageal glands, digestive gland and, in some cases, anal glands. The digestive gland is the largest and more important for digestion and nutrient absorption. The digestive system of each of the eight extant molluscan classes is reviewed, highlighting the most recent data available on histological, ultrastructural and functional aspects of tissues and cells involved in nutrient absorption, intracellular and extracellular digestion, with emphasis on glandular tissues. September 2015 PREFACE This document provides an update to the Bullfrog Creek Aquatic Resource Protection Area (ARPA) Management Plan and has been prepared by Audubon Florida’s Florida Coastal Islands Sanctuaries (FCIS), Tampa, FL. It updates the earlier plan prepared by FCIS and Lewis Environmental Services, Inc., Salt Springs, FL under contract to the Tampa Port Authority (now Port Tampa Bay) through its Sovereign Lands Management Initiatives Program. Several business affiliations and organizational name transitions and changes have occurred since the original plan was prepared in 1998. In this updated version, we have included the business and institutional names and business affiliations and location names that are currently in use, replacing the outdated names. In addition, we have updated data and survey information relating to the environmental features located within the Bullfrog Creek ARPA and the study area. We are pleased that several of the recommendations presented in the original plan have been implemented in the intervening years by the many organizations and institutions involved in the management of Tampa Bay. For example: - There are currently no sewage residual or septage disposal operations within the Bullfrog Creek watershed. Hillsborough County no longer permits sewage residual disposal within the county’s boundaries. - Year-round boating regulations have been adopted to reduce harm to manatees within the shallower areas of the Bullfrog Creek ARPA. - Shoreline protection/restoration structures have been placed along the highly impacted shorelines of Whiskey Stump and Green Keys, Port Redwing and portions of the Alafia Bank. -

Karlen, EPC-HC [email protected] Prepared for: Tampa Bay Estuary Program September 2008 Executive Summary The Tampa Bay Benthic Monitoring Program was initiated in 1993 by the Tampa Bay National Estuary Program as part of a basin-wide monitoring effort to provide data to area managers and to track long term trends in the Tampa Bay ecosystem. The monitoring program is a cooperative effort between Hillsborough, Manatee and Pinellas Counties, with the Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County handling the biological and sediment contaminant sample processing and data analysis. This report covers the first twelve years of monitoring data (1993- 2004). A total of 1,217 sites were sampled and analyzed for environmental characteristics, sediment chemistry, and benthic community composition. The median sample depth bay-wide was 2.8 meters (range 0 – 13.2 meters) with bottom salinities ranging from 0 to 35.9 psu. The bay-wide median salinity was 26 psu and nearly 80% of the sampling sites were within the polyhaline salinity range (18-30 psu). Salinities were variable between years with the lowest salinities occurring in 1995 and 2003 and highest in 2000. Salinities were significantly different between bay segments with the highest salinities being recorded in Boca Ciega Bay and Lower Tampa Bay and lowest salinities in the Manatee River.
