WHEREAS October 21, 1979, will mark the one hundredth

anniversary of the invention by Thomas A. Edison of the first

practical incandescent electric ; and

WHEREAS the ceireer of Thomas A. Edison has enhanced the

lives of United States citizens and of millions of people through­

out the world by his many inventions, including the phonograph,

the motion picture camera, the "universal" stock ticker, the

storage battery, the magnetic ore separator, the ,

and the miner's lamp;and

WHEREAS many of the power and communications capabilities

existing today are a reflection of the work and dedication of

Thomas A. Edison; and

WHEREAS, the genius of Thomas A. Edison has helped develop

the modern technological era enjoyed by the world today;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT AND IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED by the

Municipal Council of the Township of Edison ,

1. That the Mayor of the Township of Edison is authorized ar

requested to issue a proclamation designating the year 1979 as

"Thomas A. Edison Centennial Year" in recognition of the complet.ic by Thomas A. Edison of his invention of the first practical in­

candescent electric lamp on October 21 , 1 8 79.

2. There be established a commission which shall be designated as the "Thomas A. Edison Centennial Commission";

3. The functions of the Commission shall be to prepare a program to observe the Thomas A. Edison Centennial Year and to plan encourage, develop, and coordinate observances and activities

in connection with such program; to consider, in preparing its

program, any plans or programs developed by State or local publi

agencies or private organizations, in connection with the

Thomas A. Edison Centennial Year, and to consult with represent­

atives from such agencies or organizations to coordinate such

plans or programs; to initiate the development of publications,

documentary and bibliographic projects, conferences, seminars,

and public programs in connection with the Thomas A. Edison

Centennial Year, and to encourage and coordinate similar

activities by State and local public agencies and private

organizations, and, to encourage efforts to preserve and develop

historic sites.

4. The Commission shall be composed of fifteen (15) member who shall be appointed by the Mayor.

5. The Commission shall cease to exist on January 31, 19BO
