2017–18 Annual Report 7 NEWS AROUND ROMAN 27th Annual Greater Area Leadership Award Dinner On Thursday, October 11th, 2018, Roman Catholic honored John Spagnola, Managing Director of PFM Asset Management, LLC, and a former member of the Philadelphia Eagles, as the recipient of the 27th Annual Greater Philadelphia Area Leadership Award at the Union League of Philadelphia. This annual gala is one of Roman’s largest fundraisers and proceeds benefit our students.

Veterans Day Assembly Roman held its annual Veterans Day Assembly on Thursday, November 8th. The event is organized every year by the Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) student organization. This year’s assembly was dedicated specifically to the 100-year anniversary of the ending of World War I. The assembly featured students and faculty reading biographies about various veterans from different conflicts in history. These readings revealed the personal sacrifice and commitment of those who have valiantly served our nation and preserved the freedoms we now enjoy. Roman Catholic High School has the distinction of having alumni who served in every major conflict since the Spanish-American War. In addition to the assembly, members of Roman’s Executive Board of the Alumni Association tolled the bells at Catholic High at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month to commemorate the ending of the Great War. Roman Run On Sunday, November 11th, 2018, a crowd of alumni, current students, family, and friends of Roman ran down scenic Boat House Row as part of the annual Roman Run. 8 Roman Catholic High School Mock Trial Remains Cahillites Get Politically Engaged! World-renowned! In early October, City Commissioner Mr. Al Schmidt and his associate Mr. Aizaz Gill visited the school to promote voter registration. RCHS Becomes a “No Place for Hate” School This year, Roman has started the process to become an official No Place for Hate school. The goal of the program is to promote respectful relationships between all members of our community. 2017–18 Annual Report 9 NEWS AROUND ROMAN Roman Gives Back This school year, the Community Service Corps (CSC), made up of both students and faculty moderators, has been taking numerous trips to St. Francis Inn in the Kensington area of Philadelphia. There, they help serve meals to the less fortunate. CSC has also taken the time to make nearly 300 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the homeless. Our young men are truly living out the Gospel in serving the poor and disenfranchised.

Roman Students Attend Building Bridges Through STEM Event For the second consecutive year, a dozen Roman students attended an event sponsored by SEPTA, AECOM, and the Engineers Club of Philadelphia. Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Chapter Attend Launch of Share the Keys Program In October, students attended the launch of the Share the Keys program at the Wells Fargo Center. This program is a commitment to safer driving, developed by the Division of Highway Safety and Kean University. It is a research-based, data-driven program designed to reduce teen driver crash risks through increased parental involvement. SADD group hopes to bring this program to RCHS in the Spring of 2019. 2017–18 Annual Report 11 Memorial Scholarships making a difference at Broad & Vine Patrick E. Ward ’66 Memorial Scholarship Back in August, the Roman, St. Francis Xavier, and Fairmount communities remembered and honored Patty Ward ’66 who lost his life serving our country in The Vietnam War fifty years ago. The day began with a procession from Patty E. Ward Way to St. Francis Xavier Church for . Father Bongard ’77 celebrated Mass with the help of current Cahillites as altar servers. After Mass, a moving ceremony with powerful speeches properly honored Patty and all veterans. Also during the ceremony, a check for over $26,000 was presented to Father Bongard to establish the Patrick E. Ward ’66 Memorial Scholarship. The Roman community is overwhelmed at this incredible display of generosity and remembrance. Although his promising life was cut tragically short, Patty had a deep and profound influence on countless people. His legacy continues to help and assist present day Cahillites through tuition assistance monies raised in his name. If you would like to contribute to the Patrick E. Zorita Marie Clark Memorial Scholarship Mr. Kevin Clark, parent of current student, Logan Clark ’22, recently established the Zorita Marie Clark Memorial Scholarship in honor of his mother. He officially committed to the scholarship on her birthday, October 2nd. Ms. Clark was a single mother who raised 11 children. This scholarship will provide tuition assistance to single-parent families of color with demonstrated need. Mr. Clark views the scholarship as an opportunity to say, “thank you” to the who helped his family in their time of need. Aloysius F. Barr ’32 Memorial Scholarship Eugene Barr ’66 has recently established a scholarship in honor of his father Aloysius Francis Barr, ’32. Aloysius Barr along with his two brothers all joined the Philadelphia Fire Department, and Aloysius had a long and storied career as a firefighter. Aloysius along with his wife Winifred lived in Roxborough and raised Eugene and two other sons, Charles ’58 and Aloysius Jr. ’62. Aloysius and Winifred always stressed the importance of education to their sons, and all three boys attended and graduated from . Mr. Barr played a very important role in the boys’ higher education often moonlighting on the side with the fire department to earn extra money that was saved and used to help pay tuition. Aloysius Barr was a loving and caring father and husband, and he had a reputation as a great guy who was dedicated to his community. This scholarship will provide tuition assistance to families with parents who are firefighters. Appreciating the great sacrifice emergency responders make every day, RCHS is grateful to Gene for his generosity and support of sons of firefighters. Aloysius F. God blessed Roman with a beautiful sunny day on Sunday, November 4th to celebrate our Memorial Mass and Homecoming! As Day Mounted the East, the Homecoming Committee, along with the Advancement and Maintenance teams did the final preparations as nearly 500 Sons of Cahill returned home to celebrate our return to tradition.

A beautiful Mass celebrated by our President/Rector, Rev. Joseph Bongard ’77, and an inspirational homily delivered by Rev. Eric Banecker ’07, lifted our hearts. Our loyal alums displayed their Cahill spirit by gifting $4,200 in the Collection to benefit our neediest of students. Frank DiLella ’68, Jim Cute ’68 and Vince Petrellis ’68 present their Class Purse of over The Annual Meeting of the Alumni Association was conducted by Jim Cute ’68 $10,000 to Rev. Joseph W. Bongard ’77. who gathered his classmates to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Nick Hamilton ’19 wowed us with his inspirational speech. Tom Johnston ’72 was saluted for his loyal leadership and Steve Paul ’83 was elected as his able successor. There was also time to remember all alumni who passed this year including iconic Roman Guy, Paul Pincituro ’69.

Homecoming featured great food and drink throughout the building as classmates from 1938 to 2018 buzzed with camaraderie.

Tours led by our-purple clad students showcased our updated classic 1890 building, McSherry Annex and the magnificent new Howard Center for the Arts.

When Day Sank to its Rest, we put the House that Cahill Built back together to welcome Monday’s young Cahillites. Our hope is they too will carry The 1890 Patrick Matthews ’38 celebrating his 80th Roman Spirit past graduation and return again and again with time and treasure anniversary of graduating from Catholic High as Brothers for Life. IRA Rollover: This summary describes the important advantages and steps in making a qualified charitable distribution from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA), commonly referred to as a IRA charitable rollover. Legislation enacted in December 2015 authorized charitable gifts from IRAs. Among the provisions of the bill is an exclusion from gross income for income tax purposes of up to $100,000 (for each IRA account owner) for “qualified charitable distributions” from an IRA. The distribution will count toward an individual’s Required Minimum Distribution (RMD).

EITC/OSTC Program: ’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC) programs allow businesses and individuals to direct the monies they pay in taxes to go towards providing financial aid and scholarships for Roman students. Band 1, 2, 3, 4, playing the tuba, baritone saxophone, and French horn. What have you been doing since you graduated Roman? US Military nine years. Retired from The VA after 32 years, Knights of Columbus, Faithful Navigator, Grand Knight, Commander American Legion Post #516. What do you remember most about your time at Roman? How the faculty and staff truly cared about me and all of the students. They cared about our Catholic education, our religion and our well-being. I also remember building lifelong friendships. Why do you give back to Roman? If it was not for Roman and God’s help where would I be? I can never RCHS Profile repay Roman for my Catholic education and helping lay the foundation for being a Catholic gentleman. Why do you believe it is important for others to give back to Roman? We as Cahillites must leave our own footprints for other to follow. It is our duty and responsibility to give back so that our sons and grandsons will have the same opportunity that we had. What did Roman offer to you? A path to leadership and a bond with my fellow Cahillites to achieve whatever goals and objectives we set out to attain. What do you feel makes Roman unique in today’s world? Roman has set its goals for the future with our students in mind. Yes “WE ARE SECOND TO NONE.”

What is your vision for the future of Roman? Roman, if not now, in the future will be the best Catholic High School in the country!

Mastering these tools will enable our graduates to work in a massive breadth of industries and open opportunities for them to become entrepreneurs within their future fields. I thoroughly enjoyed being a reporter for The Cahillite, the school newspaper. I concentrated on sports reporting. What did you do after graduation from Roman? After graduation, I entered the Military Service, and joined the US Army Air Corps 15th Air Force. I served in Europe and flew 35 missions as a B-24 Ball Turret Gunner. After serving my time in the military, I began my business career as Director of Corporate Policy, RCA Corporation and managed a systems consulting group for General Electric. Following retirement from GE, I was President, Princeton Administrative Systems, Inc., a business systems consultancy.
