A Brief History of the Parish of Saint Eugene Up to the 60th Anniversary On Sunday, November 6, 1949, Father John Dougherty, Monsignor John Fearns and Father Roger Franklin offered four Masses at the Club House Inn on Tuckahoe Road, attended by a total of 378 members of the new St. Eugene's Parish. The official document establishing the parish and appointing Father Dougherty as pastor had been signed by Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York, and dated October 31, 1949. In choosing as the patron of the parish the seventh-century Pope St. Eugene I, the Cardinal was honoring his great friend Pope Pius XII (Eugenio Pacelli). Northeast Yonkers, before World War II a more or less sparsely populated area, located between the urban west side of Yonkers and the established communities of Bronxville, Tuckahoe and Crestwood to the east, was by the late 1940S experiencing a period of rapid growth, typical of many suburban communities across the nation during the post-war years. The need for a new parish was clear. Cardinal Spellman had the right man for the job in Father Dougherty, then spiritual director of St. Joseph's Seminary, Dunwoodie. Old-time parishioners speak with great affection of Father-later Monsignor Dougherty, a man of holiness, vision and zeal, to whom we all owe so much. Father Dougherty's dream of a church and a school would soon become reality. To that end, 5.6 acres of largely wooded land on the northeast corner of Tuckahoe Road and Central Park Avenue-diagonally across from the Club House Inn property-were purchased. -

Displaced "Pan-Americans" and the Transformation of the Catholic Church in Philadelphia, 1789-1850 HE REVEREND JOHN HUGHES TOLD A GREAT STORY about the construction of the Roman Catholic church of St. John the Evangelist in Philadelphia. Hughes, the project's major fundraiser, St. John's first pastor, and later archbishop of New York, related that his announcement in 1830 of the plan to build a grand new cornerstone of Catholic life garnered only a lukewarm response from his congregation. Days went by before he received his first donation, from a humble ser- vant, who delivered to the priest a few precious cents from her meager wages. From that moment on, Hughes "never had a doubt of the success" of the building project.1 This lovely anecdote, redolent of New Testament teachings, burnishes one of the principal and lasting images of the Catholic Church in the United States, but it obscures crucial aspects of St. John's construction and the Catholic Church's broader institutional development. From the 1780s to the mid-nineteenth century, a small group of "Pan-Americans," men and women with extensive ties to Latin America and the Caribbean, played a determinative role in the church's transformation in Philadelphia and, as a result, the nation as a whole. Some, their lives thrown into disarray by internecine warfare and eco- nomic upheaval, came to Philadelphia for short periods of time, while others made a permanent home in the city. Here, they met residents with an existing network of economic, political, and cultural ties to the region. This group became embroiled in an intense confrontation over the future of American Catholicism. -

Fo- cusing on his remarkable life, A Monumental Legacy tells the story of a diaspora for whom the Cathedral he envisioned became both a spiritual home and a symbol of their success as a community. This year, the sesquicentennial of Archbishop Hughes’s death, St. Pat- rick’s is undergoing an historic restoration. A Monumental Legacy tells the story of the evolution of Irish America in 19th century New York. The exhibition features extensive original research and a selection of paintings from the Brian P. Burns Collection, one of the most impor- tant private collections of Irish American art. Narrative panels and rare images from the Archdiocesan archives further enhance the exhibition which runs through July 31, 2014. -

After working in the American South for several years, he founded Mount Saint Mary’s College and Seminary, Emmitsburg, Maryland, in 1808. While there he served as spiritual director to Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. In 1826, he was named Bishop of New York (the only non-Irish ordinary in the history of the Archdiocese). By the end of his episcopate there were over 200,000 Catholics in his diocese, and the numbers were growing. He established the first seminary in Nyack, New York, in 1833. -

Frank Gerrity ST. JOSEPH'S UNIVERSITY JOSEPH RIPLEY CHANDLER AND "THE TEMPORAL POWER OF THE POPE." A tthe height of the Know Nothing agitation in the eighteen-fifties, Apersonal and political circumstances combined to project a Phila- delphian and recent convert to Catholicism, Joseph Ripley Chandler, into a position of national prominence as a champion of his Church and defender of his fellow Catholics. Chandler was already well-known for his achievements in journalism, literature, and politics. A native of Massachusetts, he had come to Philadelphia in 1815 to work as a schoolmaster. When in 1822 he became a salaried editorial writer on the moribund Gazette of the United States, an association began that would bring the Gazette national influence as a Whig journal and Chandler, its eventual proprietor, distinction as an editor and publisher. E.P. Ober- holtzer, Philadelphia's literary historian, remarks of Chandler that "no man who ever edited a paper in Philadelphia brought greater honor to his journalist's vocation." For reasons of health Chandler sold the Gazette in 1847, but he maintained his connection with Graham's American Monthly Magazine, serving as editor in 1848-1849. He also continued to contribute to it and to other magazines the polished pieces that had already brought him some measure of literary reputation. For many years a distinguished Freemason, Chandler's speeches and writ- ings on Masonic topics were highly esteemed and widely circulated in the United States and Western Europe. Finally, Chandler's role as a long-time member of Philadelphia City Council and promoter of civic betterment had brought him the respect of his fellow citizens.' It is not difficult to understand why the Whig Committee of the Second Congressional District found him an attractive candidate for the United States Congress. -

It is possible that we will never get the full story or reach rock bottom truth regarding the permission to bury St. John Neumann, C.,SS.R., the Fourth Bishop of Philadelphia, in St. Peter's, the church conducted by the Redempt9rists. This is not to question the honesty of anyone involved in the episode. Rather, it is a case where we have the· final decision and are not told all the steps leading to it. This is like knowing· the final answer to a problem in mathematics without knowing the stages leading . -

GLOSSARY Bishop A member of the hierarchy of the Church, given jurisdiction over a diocese; or an archbishop over an archdiocese Bull (From bulla, a seal) A solemn pronouncement by the Pope, such as the 1537 Bull of Pope Paul III, Sublimis Deus,proclaiming the human rights of the Indians (See Ch. 1, n. 16) Chapter An assembly of members, or delegates of a community, province, congregation, or the entire Order of Preachers. A chapter is called for decision-making or election, at intervals determined by the Constitutions. Coadjutor One appointed to assist a bishop in his diocese, with the right to succeed him as its head. Bishop Congregation A title given by the Church to an approved body of religious women or men. Convent The local house of a community of Dominican friars or sisters. Council The central governing unit of a Dominican priory, province, congregation, monastery, laity and the entire Order. Diocese A division of the Church embracing the members entrusted to a bishop; in the case of an archdiocese, an archbishop. Divine Office The Liturgy of the Hours. The official prayer of the Church composed of psalms, hymns and readings from Scripture or related sources. Episcopal Related to a bishop and his jurisdiction in the Church; as in "Episcopal See." Exeat Authorization given to a priest by his bishop to serve in another diocese. Faculties Authorization given a priest by the bishop for priestly ministry in his diocese. Friar A priest or cooperator brother of the Order of Preachers. Lay Brother A term used in the past for "cooperator brother." Lay Dominican A professed member of the Dominican Laity, once called "Third Order." Mandamus The official assignment of a friar or a sister to a Communit and ministry related to the mission of the Order.
