Frank Gerrity ST. JOSEPH'S UNIVERSITY JOSEPH RIPLEY CHANDLER AND "THE TEMPORAL POWER OF THE POPE." A tthe height of the Know Nothing agitation in the eighteen-fifties, Apersonal and political circumstances combined to project a Phila- delphian and recent convert to Catholicism, Joseph Ripley Chandler, into a position of national prominence as a champion of his Church and defender of his fellow Catholics. Chandler was already well-known for his achievements in journalism, literature, and politics. A native of Massachusetts, he had come to Philadelphia in 1815 to work as a schoolmaster. When in 1822 he became a salaried editorial writer on the moribund Gazette of the United States, an association began that would bring the Gazette national influence as a Whig journal and Chandler, its eventual proprietor, distinction as an editor and publisher. E.P. Ober- holtzer, Philadelphia's literary historian, remarks of Chandler that "no man who ever edited a paper in Philadelphia brought greater honor to his journalist's vocation." For reasons of health Chandler sold the Gazette in 1847, but he maintained his connection with Graham's American Monthly Magazine, serving as editor in 1848-1849. He also continued to contribute to it and to other magazines the polished pieces that had already brought him some measure of literary reputation. For many years a distinguished Freemason, Chandler's speeches and writ- ings on Masonic topics were highly esteemed and widely circulated in the United States and Western Europe. Finally, Chandler's role as a long-time member of Philadelphia City Council and promoter of civic betterment had brought him the respect of his fellow citizens.' It is not difficult to understand why the Whig Committee of the Second Congressional District found him an attractive candidate for the United States Congress. -

Carroll During the last quarter of the eighteenth century there existed in Guilford County a group of people known as the Nicholites. This band of believers, who lived near Deep River, was an off-shoot of a larger body which settled on the Delaware-Maryland border. 1 Like those who remained in Maryland and Delaware, the Nicholites of North Carolina took their name from Joseph Nichols, the founder of their religious society. Joseph Nichols, the little-known spiritual leader whose religious call took him on preaching trips throughout Dela- ware, both shores of Maryland, and to Philadelphia, was born near Dover, Delaware, about 1730. In his youth and early manhood his vivacity and humor led many of his neigh- bors to seek his company, so that on Sundays (or first-days as the Nicholites came to call them) and at other times of leisure many of his companions gathered to share in his entertaining pastime. It was at one of these gatherings for pleasure that one of Nichols's close friends was taken ill and died suddenly at the place where they had assembled. This event was credited by Nichols as having awakened his attention, showing him the uncertainty of life, and bringing about a radical change in 2 his character. The Disruption of the Philadelphia Whigocracy: Joseph R. Chandler, Anti-Catholicism, and the Congressional Election oj 1854 HE TRADITIONAL PERCEPTION of the Kansas-Nebraska Act as the key event in the political divisions of 1854 and the Tsubsequent collapse of the Whig party has been further mod- ified by recent articles on party realignment in antebellum Pennsyl- vania. Of particular importance in this connection is a study by William E. Gienapp that presents convincing evidence that linked moral and religious issues (temperance and anti-Catholicism, in par- ticular) had substantially greater influence on the outcome of the elections of 1854 than did opposition to the Nebraska measure.1 While the appeal of such issues would detach large numbers of voters from both major parties (and in combination with the Nebraska question produce the Democratic debacle of 1854), it was the Whigs—with their history of advocacy of moral reforms and flirtations with nativ- Research for this article was supported by the Board on Faculty Research of Saint Joseph's University. 1 The traditional view to which historians have reacted for more than a generation evolved from the work of Allan Nevins and Roy F. RusH INTRODUCTION On March 30, 1852, two days after his episcopal ordination on Passion Sunday in St. Alphonsus' Church, the Most Reverend John Nepomucene Neumann \ C.SS.R., took the early morning train from 2 Baltimore for Philadelphia • At three o'clock that afternoon he was installed in St. John's, the Procathedral, as Philadelphia's fourth bishop, an offìce that he fulfìlled until his sudden and unexpected death at the age of 48 on January 5, 1860. Philadelphia was then one of the suffragan sees in the Metropolitan Province of Baltimore, the arch bishop being the Most Reverend Francis Patrick Kenrick, Neumann's 3 predecessor in Philadelphia • The other suffragan sees were Pittsburgh and Erie in Pennsylvania, Richmond in Virginia, Wheeling in West Virginia, Charleston in South Carolina, Savannah in Georgia.
