An annotated list of Italian Renaissance humanists, their writings about Jews, and involvement in Hebrew studies, ca. 1440-ca.1540 This list, arranged in chronological order by author’s date of birth, where known, is a preliminary guide to Italian humanists’ Latin and vernacular prose and poetic accounts of Jews and Judaic culture and history from about 1440 to 1540. In each case, I have sought to provide the author’s name and birth and death dates, a brief biography highlighting details which especially pertain to his interest in Jews, a summary of discussions about Jews, a list of relevant works and dates of composition, locations of manuscripts, and a list of secondary sources or studies of the author and his context arranged alphabetically by author’s name. Manuscripts are listed in alphabetical order by city of current location; imprints, as far as possible, by ascending date. J. Brill, 1963-1991) Simon Atumano (d. c. 1380) Born in Constantinople and became a Basilian monk in St John of Studion there. Bishop of Gerace in Calabria from 1348 until 1366, and Latin archbishop of Thebes until 1380. During his time in Thebes, which was the capital of the Catalan duchy of Athens, he studied Hebrew and in the mid- to late-1370s he began work on a polyglot Latin-Greek-Hebrew Bible dedicated to Pope Urban VI. -

Proc SocTHE Antiq ARTISTIC Scot 147 PATRONAGE (2017), 175–217 OF JOHN STUART: VIC-LE-COMTE, THE LAST SAINTE-CHAPELLE | 175 DOI: https://doi.org/10.9750/PSAS.147.1251 The artistic patronage of John Stuart, Duke of Albany, 1520–30: Vic-le-Comte, the last Sainte-Chapelle Bryony Coombs1 ABSTRACT The Sainte-Chapelle at Vic-le-Comte is one of the most important religious buildings surviving from the 16th century in the Auvergne. It was the last of ten French royal and ducal chapels founded, broadly following the precedent set by Louis IX’s foundation of the Parisian Sainte-Chapelle in 1248. The primary function of this, and the other Saintes-Chapelles, was to provide a dignified structure within which to house fragments of the Passion relics inherited from Louis IX. For their patrons, such foundations served as important public expressions of piety, advertised the patrons’ connections to the French crown, and simultaneously functioned as valuable diplomatic tools, encouraging important guests to venerate their relics. The Sainte-Chapelle at Vic-le-Comte has received limited scholarly attention, particularly in relation to its patron John Stuart, Duke of Albany, and his position as Regent of Scotland. This paper examines this foundation and its ambitious programme of decoration in relation to the aims and ambitions of its founder. The motivations behind the project are analysed in relation to Albany’s position in Scotland, his growing prominence in France, and his strengthening ties to the Florentine Medici family. Investigated in relation to other examples of his patronage, Albany’s foundation demonstrates how issues of ancient lineage, sacred kingship, and dynastic commemoration were of central importance. -

Recibido: 03.03.2009 Aceptado: 13.04.2009 DEIFICACIÓN DE LA NATURALEZA HUMANA EN MÁXIMO EL CONFESOR RESUMEN: La novedosa doctrina de la voluntad humana en Máximo el Confesor, que influirá decisivamente en pensadores como Juan de Da- masco, la consolidó aquél a través de su interpretación de las dos volun- tades en Cristo en el ámbito de la controversia monotelita, de modo que su objetivo primordial fue demostrar que, aun cuando en el Hijo de Dios hubo contrapuestas voluntades, ello no representó una dualidad de per- sonas o naturalezas. En el artículo se da cuenta de cómo esta finalidad le impuso utilizar una nueva terminología para afrontar los retos surgidos de su innovadora consideración del albedrío. ABSTRACT: The innovative doctrine concerning human will in Maximus the Confessor (that influenced thinkers like John of Damascus) originated in his interpretation of Christ’s two wills, which he defended in the time of the monothelite controversy. His main objective was to demonstrate that even if the Son of God had opposite volitions, they didn’t imply two different natures in Him. In this paper we’ll try to elucidate how this belief obliged him to use a new terminology to specify his new conception of human will. KEY WORDS: Maximus the Confessor, Free Will, Christ, Nature. The text is usually dated around 1527, although some have argued for earlier and later dates. A date later than the Pontificate of Clement appears most unlikely. For a recent discussion of the question of dating, see Shearman, Raphael in Early Modern Sources , 2003 ( infra ), vol. 1, pp. 809-810. It is not entirely certain that Giovio used the word ‘ vita ’ in his title, and this characterization may have been supplied later. Nevertheless, ‘ vita ’ and ‘ elogio ’ are two terms that Giovio applied to his biographies, some quite brief and other more lengthy. -
