An annotated list of Italian Renaissance humanists, their writings about Jews, and involvement in Hebrew studies, ca. 1440-ca.1540 This list, arranged in chronological order by author’s date of birth, where known, is a preliminary guide to Italian humanists’ Latin and vernacular prose and poetic accounts of Jews and Judaic culture and history from about 1440 to 1540. In each case, I have sought to provide the author’s name and birth and death dates, a brief biography highlighting details which especially pertain to his interest in Jews, a summary of discussions about Jews, a list of relevant works and dates of composition, locations of manuscripts, and a list of secondary sources or studies of the author and his context arranged alphabetically by author’s name. Manuscripts are listed in alphabetical order by city of current location; imprints, as far as possible, by ascending date. Abbreviations: DBI Dizionario biografico degli Italiani (Rome: Istituto della enciclopedia italiana, 1960-present) Kristeller, Iter Paul Oskar Kristeller, Iter Italicum: A Finding List of Uncatalogued or Incompletely Catalogued Humanistic Manuscripts of the Renaissance in Italian and Other Libraries; Accedunt alia itinera, 6 vols (London: Warburg Institute; Leiden: E. J. Brill, 1963-1991) Simon Atumano (d. c. 1380) Born in Constantinople and became a Basilian monk in St John of Studion there. Bishop of Gerace in Calabria from 1348 until 1366, and Latin archbishop of Thebes until 1380. During his time in Thebes, which was the capital of the Catalan duchy of Athens, he studied Hebrew and in the mid- to late-1370s he began work on a polyglot Latin-Greek-Hebrew Bible dedicated to Pope Urban VI. -

The text is usually dated around 1527, although some have argued for earlier and later dates. A date later than the Pontificate of Clement appears most unlikely. For a recent discussion of the question of dating, see Shearman, Raphael in Early Modern Sources , 2003 ( infra ), vol. 1, pp. 809-810. It is not entirely certain that Giovio used the word ‘ vita ’ in his title, and this characterization may have been supplied later. Nevertheless, ‘ vita ’ and ‘ elogio ’ are two terms that Giovio applied to his biographies, some quite brief and other more lengthy. -

REVISTA DE L’IIEB, 2: ACTES DEL II SIMPOSI INTERNACIONAL SOBRE ELS BORJA Cèsar Borja i l’art: tres episodis MARIÀ CARBONELL I BUADES Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona La primera reacció de qualsevol historiador que es proposa explorar sense pre- venció l‟univers Borja és la de perplexitat, si no la d‟estupor, perquè les informacions que n‟obté són en excés contradictòries i, encara ara, sobretot pel cas que ens ocupa, el de Cèsar Borja, exasperadament fragmentàries. I és que, de Cèsar, més enllà de la ines- troncable tradició que perpetua els aspectes més escandalosos o poc edificants de la vida familiar –i convé de recordar, sense que els vulgui justificar de cap manera, que gairebé mai no recolzen en proves documentals contundents– i, naturalment, més enllà d‟una valoració més ponderada de la carrera militar –tot i que, vulnerable al benvolent capítol VII del Príncep de Maquiavel, l‟etopeia no sempre escapa a la hipèrbole–, més enllà d‟aquest panorama tan desfregat, pràcticament no sabem res d‟una biografia tan evocadora com efímera. Cèsar, a tothom li consta, va morir a trenta-dos anys.1 Però no vull insistir en els vicis de la historiografia cesariana, perquè, en definitiva, no són dife- rents dels que contaminen tota la historiografia borgiana, i d‟això ja se n‟ha parlat a bastament en els últims anys, i en primer lloc Marion Hermann-Röttgen.2 Insisteixo només en un fet innegable: gairebé res no sabem de les facetes més íntimes d‟un perso- natge paradoxalment exposat des del seu naixement a la faç del món. -

FRANCESCO SALVIATI RITRATTISTA: EXPERIMENTS IN CINQUECENTO PORTRAITURE by Xiaoyin Huang A thesis submitted to the Graduate Program in Art History In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (April, 2013) Copyright ©XiaoyinHuang, 2013 Abstract This dissertation aims to provide a comprehensive study of Francesco Salviati’s portraits, analyzed within a chronological framework. Traditional attributions are re-examined and recent discoveries included to establish a reliable core group of the artist’s portraits, one exhibiting a stylistic coherence. Salviati’s activities as a portraitist are placed in the historical, political, cultural and artistic context of his time, with particular emphasis on patronage. Versatile and well-connected, Francesco served a number of top-ranking patrons of his time, including Cardinal Giovanni Salviati, Pier Luigi and Alessandro Farnese (in Rome), Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici (in Florence), the Grimani family (in Venice), King Henri II, and the Cardinal of Lorraine in France. This study intends to navigate portraiture’s role in the relationships between the courtier-artist and his princely patrons. Characterized by innovation and experimentation, Salviati’s portraits vary in composition, media and supports. As one of the earliest artists to produce portrait miniatures in Italy, Francesco evidently introduced the genre to Cosimo I de’ Medici’s court to create an aura of a royal court equal to that in France and England. His experiments with the use of various stone supports for portraits are discussed in relation to his status as the leading painter in Rome after the death of Sebastiano del Piombo in 1547. -
