Akira Iriye's startling new view of the war in the Pacific.

Power and Culture The Japanese-American War, 1941-1945 Akiralriye In this bold interpretation of the war in the Pacific, Iriye con- vincingly demonstrates that many Japanese leaders shared with their American counterparts an essentially Wilsonian vision of international cooperation. "Iriye's approach and conclusions are original and stimulating. This is a book which all students of the Far Eastern war will need to read and ponder." —Christopher Thome "A strikingly revisionist argument. . . What you get from Iriye's book is not the traditional picture of Japan and the locked in irreconcilable conflict, but rather a portrait of two enemies moving along compatible lines toward a viable rapprochement." —Robert Dallek $22.00 Press Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138

The political life on which Wang Fan- hsi looks back in his fascinating memoirs ended with him in exile and the Chinese Trotsky- ist movement, for which he worked for over twenty years, in ruins. Yet this is a valuable record of the Chinese Communist movement; Wang balances harrowing episodes of pov- erty and imprisonment with descriptions of Chinese cultural and literary life during those years of activity and change. 1980 282 pp. $45.00

Memories of Loyang Yang Hsuan-chih and the Lost Capital (493-534) W.J.F. JENNER, University of Leeds. Loyang, chosen by the Northern Wei as their new capital, grew rapidly until its population exceeded 500,000; forty-one years later the dynasty collapsed and the city was abandoned. The Lo-yang chi'ieh-lan chi, written by a court official, is a lively and graphic guide to Loyang and is notable as it is the earliest surviving substantial description of a Chinese city. In this study, Professor Jenner provides a full translation of Yang's work and also considers the historical background of the city and the political events that shaped and destroyed it. Peasant State and Society in Medieval South India BURTON STEIN, University of Hawaii, Honolulu. Professor Stein examines South India— one of the oldest continuing peasant societies in the world—from the time it took stable form in the seventh century to the arrival of the Europeans. He questions the assumptions underlying the established historiography on medieval South India and provides the basis for a new interpretation focusing on peasant society and culture. 1980 450 pp.; 4 maps $31.00

Islamic Society on the South Asian Frontier The Mappilas of Malabar, 1498-1922 STEPHEN FREDERIC DALE, Ohio State University. In this study of the Muslims of Kerala in South India from the arrival of Vasco de Gama in 1498 to the Mappila Rebellion of 1921-2, the author examines the tense relations between the Muslims and the Europeans and Hin- dus of Kerala. Professor Dale focuses on the reasons why their relationship has stimulated the growth of a militant Muslim tradition and shows that this militant tradition is part of a wider pattern of Islamic communities in India and Southeast Asia. 1981 290 pp.; frontis.; 6 halftones; 8 maps $49.95

The Singapore Naval Base and the Defence of Britain's Eastern Empire 1919-1941 JAMES NEIDPATH. The world naval balance suffered a revolutionary transformation as a result of the First World War and the surrender of the Kaiser's High Seas Fleet in 1918. The Pacific became the focus of naval interest, and Britain began the construction of a great naval base at Singapore. Neidpath examines the political, naval, and economic arguments for and against the base and the collapse of the "Singapore Policy" by 1940 in the race of German and Italian hostility. 1981 304 pp. $69.00

Bowers, M.D. Between 1641 and 1853, Japan was officially closed to all Western influences and ideas. Unofficially, however, Western medical knowl- edge flowed into the country through the Dutch trading post at Nagasaki. When the Twain Meet charts the progress of European medical influences in Japan from the relatively clandestine teachings of the Dutch through the periods of British and German dominance which followed the "opening" of the nation and which radically altered the nature of Japanese medical practice. Along the way, John Z. Bowers presents a fascinating picture of Japanese medicine during the closed period and offers a new look at life in the nineteenth- century German community in Tokyo. $14.00 ty ohns Hopkins The Johns Hopkins University Press, Baltimore, Maryland 21218

Amore, University of Windsor, and Larry D. Shinn, Oberlin College. The telling of tales has been and continues to be a basic method of religious instruction in India. Animal fables, fairy tales, epic stories of heroes, narratives of the lives of the Buddha, myths relating the feats of gods and goddesses, and regional folktales of all kinds have been a part of Indian culture for more than three thousand years. Drawing on this rich narrative tradition, Lustful Maidens and Ascetic Kings in- terprets Indian culture through popular religious and secular tales from Hindu and Buddhist literature. Arranged topically and functionally in four chapters to reveal their religious and social teaching, the stories describe and provide models for family and social roles and illustrate such values as courage, generosity, truthfulness, compassion, and detachment. The stories are translated or retold with a running commentary by the authors. "A brilliant success."—K.L. The contributors have had extensive firsthand research experience in Chinese culture and many are themselves Chinese. The book contains chapters on historical aspects of neo-Confucian behavioral paradigms, suicide and the family, legal aspects of insanity, and traditional Chinese beliefs about mental illness. There are chapters on moral development, childhood psychopathology, deviant marriage patterns, and styles of drinking. The first systematic study of shen-k'uei, a Chinese culture-bound syndrome, is presented along with a review of Chinese culture-bound syndromes and of the more general influences of Chinese cultural beliefs and behavioral norms on the symptomatology, illness experience, course, and treatment response of psychiatric disorders. This collection is intended to fill the need for a broad based review of the current status of scholarly understanding of individual behavior and mental illness in Chinese culture.
