Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Dated: 3 Abstract This thesis articulates the resonances between J. M. Coetzee's lifelong engagement with mathematics and his practice as a novelist, critic, and poet. Though the critical discourse surrounding Coetzee's literary work continues to flourish, and though the basic details of his background in mathematics are now widely acknowledged, his inheritance from that background has not yet been the subject of a comprehensive and mathematically- literate account. In providing such an account, I propose that these two strands of his intellectual trajectory not only developed in parallel, but together engendered several of the characteristic qualities of his finest work. The structure of the thesis is essentially thematic, but is also broadly chronological. Chapter 1 focuses on Coetzee's poetry, charting the increasing involvement of mathematical concepts and methods in his practice and poetics between 1958 and 1979. Chapter 2 situates his master's thesis alongside archival materials from the early stages of his academic career, and thus traces the development of his philosophical interest in the migration of quantificatory metaphors into other conceptual domains. Concentrating on his doctoral thesis and a series of contemporaneous reviews, essays, and lecture notes, Chapter 3 details the calculated ambivalence with which he therein articulates, adopts, and challenges various statistical methods designed to disclose objective truth. -

He was born Jeno Waldhorn Gassner on January 30, 1903, in Máramarossziget, Hungary, and his family emigrated to the United States in 1911. He showed an early interest in theatre, appearing in a school production of Shakespeare’s The Tempest in 1915. Gassner attended Dewitt Clinton High School in New York City and was a supporter of socialism during this era. -

HIST 5195-003 Readings in International and Global History Professor Brad Simpson, Spring 2017 Mo 4:30PM - 7:30PM WOOD 4A Course Description and Objectives: This seminar will examine global and international history during the twentieth century from a variety of methodological and theoretical approaches. Its purpose is to survey some of the most innovative recent scholarship in the field (and a few that should cause us to think more critically about how we approach the field), work informed by considerations of gender, race, ideology, culture, development, domestic politics, international relations theory, political economy and recently released archival material from the former socialist bloc, some of which goes well beyond existing conceptions of foreign relations history. This course should be of interest to graduate students pursuing a project in US foreign relations, regional history, or international, transnational, and global history or seeking analytic purchase in such histories for their dissertation. For half of the semester (7 weeks) students will prepare a 2-3 page paper as a way of getting discussion going. Please bring copies of your paper to class and post them on the blackboard site. In these short papers the emphasis should be first on explaining the main points of the reading, and secondarily on offering a critique of those points. "Critique" does not mean tearing a book apart, but assessing a book's value, its importance, its place in the literature, and after that, what more we might have expected from it. Final Paper: Students will prepare a substantial review essay (15-20 pp) on a thematic topic of your choice in the field of international history or U.S. -

Recent presidents of the American Historical Association have alluded to and confirmed this vision. Bernard Bailyn has called historical scholarship "an international enterprise" and noted the increasing "transnational communication of parallel information"; John Hope Franklin has written that "scholarship knows no national boundaries"; and William H. McNeill has spoken of "the moral duty of the historical profession" to cultivate "a sense of individual identification with the triumphs and tribula- tions of humanity as a whole."1 History, it seems, has come a long way in the last one hundred years. When this organization was established, "history" mostly referred to European and especially American history, and the mission of the association was said to consist in the preservation of historical manuscripts and in the promotion of "American history, and of history in America." George Bancroft, president of the association in 1885, declared that the AHA devoted itself "to the affairs of the United States of America."2 In the intervening years, as Arthur S. Link noted in his centennial presidential address given four years ago, there has been "growing diversity in the member- ship and leadership of the AHA," and there has developed a "catholicity of interest" in all aspects of the past and in all parts of the world.3 Today, the association's 13,000 members represent diverse methodologies and specializa- dons, many ethnic groups, nearly all ages, and scores of countries.4 This last seems to me to be of special significance, for, although our organization is called the American Historical Association, it has been an international community of historians. -

Japan is often characterized as a “late developer” seeking to “catch up” to the West, but in significant ways, the United States was equally a late-developer vis-à-vis Britain and Western Europe. With this premise in mind, we begin by exploring what might be called the history of “hard power” in the American and Japanese cases—the building of modern nation states which engaged in diplomacy and war, among other activities. We then turn to a hands-on investigation of the exercise of “soft power” through US-Japan cultural interactions. We also pay attention to the local scene, to Japanese and Americans connected in various ways to Harvard, to Boston, to New England and the Northeast, asking how the attitudes, the projects, and the experiences of such individuals exemplified, shaped, or perhaps resisted or questioned this larger history of the emergence of two Pacific empires. The lives and interactions of a fascinating array of characters from each country, men as well as women, can be studied using rich local stores of English-language primary and archival sources. -

Prior to the late 1980s and the early 1990s, historical writings had been presented primarily in the framework of nations or regions: American history, European history, and the like. During the last 20 years or so, a more global approach has become influential, along with a stress on transnational actors (e.g. races, non- state organizations) and themes (e.g. migrations, human rights). I pay particular attention to international history, traditionally conceptualized as a study of interrelationships among states, which has been increasingly put in the context of, or in juxtaposition with, transnational history. This may be more a personal observation of a historian who has been reading and writing on subjects and themes in modern history, focusing on international affairs, than a widely applicable generalization. But all historians, like scholars of other disciplines, have an obligation to relate their work to that of those who have preceded them and to locate themselves in the past, present, and possible future of their fields.
