A GEOLOGICAL EVALUATION AND WORK PROPOSAL FOR THE MCKEE COPPER COMPANY CLAIM GROUP THESSALON AREA, ONTARIO FOR N.S.A.I. HOLDINGS LTD.
January, 1991 by J.P. Mills SUMMARY
The geological investigation of the Mckee property was done on behalf of N.S.A.I. Holdings Ltd. of Wawa, Ontario. The property consists of eleven claims and is located in eastern Otter Township, Ontario(Fig. l and 2). Access is easily attained from highway 129. Milling facilities are available about 12 km(7.5 mi) to the south at the Gould Copper Mine site in Gould Township.
Quartz veining with copper sulfide mineralization occurs in several places on the property. However, work to date has been concentrated on the main showing. Previous work includes local geological and geophysical surveys, diamond drilling, test pitting and an adit driven for about 85 m(260 ft) along the veining. The drilling totaled about 373 m(1224 ft) plus two short holes. assays from veining in drill core gave a maximum value of 10.39 percent copper over 0.46 m(1.5 ft). Assaying from a test pit gave a value of 7.28 percent copper over 1.53 m(5 ft).
About 13 to 15 hundred tons of mineralized vein rock from drifting were stockpiled near the adit. Five hundred tons of the material was sent to Tribag Mines in 1973 for custom milling. According to Mckee Copper and Exploration Company officials(personal communication), the material assayed 4.5 percent copper. Recent sampling(1990) and assaying of the stockpiled material and several locations along the exposed veining shows copper values ranging to 22.6 percent.
Structure and mineralization features observed on the property are similar to those recorded from other parts of the region. Numerous mineralized vein showings exist in areas near the property. For example, the Fano showing in the western part of Otter Township and the Cheney and Gould showings(former mines) in Gould Township to the south.
To fully evaluate the economic potential of the property, a varied work program is strongly recommended. The program should include geological surveys and prospecting, geophysics, road construction, stripping, trenching and sampling, soil sampling and diamond drilling.

The property(Fig. 2) is located in the east-central part of Otter Township, Ontario. The region is in the Sault Ste. Marie mining Division, Algoma District. The N.T.S. number is 41J/11SW. The coordinates of the main showing area are about Lat: 46 34© 02" and long: 83 27© 56"(see Appendix 4). The claim group can be reached by traveling north from Thessalon, Ontario for about 40 km(25 mi) on highway 129 to the Snowshoe Creek crossing(see Fig. 3). Immediately north of the crossing, a gravel road leads off to the west and the property is about 6.8 km(4.2 mi) northwest across the Mississagi River. The river is about 100 m(328 ft) to 200 m(656 ft) wide and requires an amphibious vehicle or a canoe for safe crossing.
The terrain along the gravel road is mainly well drained sand and gravel and forms a good road bed. Aggregate for road repair and construction could easily be taken from several places along the route. Bridging the river for general traffic and transport is quite feasible. Previously, Mckee Copper and Exploration Co. officials(personal communication) had recommended constructing a baily bridge upstream from the site generally used now.
Milling facilities exist in the area. The mill at the Gould Copper Mine site, which closed operations in 1986, is essentially intact and could be made operational if required(personal communication with N.S.A.I. Holdings personnel). The mill is about 12 km(7.5 mi) south of the Mckee property and about 1.5 km(0.93 mi) west of highway 129 in Gould Township. The mill is capable of processing about 200 tons of ore per day. Smelter facilities exist at INCO in Sudbury, Ontario.
TOPOGRAPHY AND VEGETATION
The property is part of the glaciated southern Shield region. Maximum relief is about 135 m(443 ft). The lower area is to the east where the south flowing Mississagi River serves as the main drainage for the region(see Fig. 3). Local drainage is eastward along generally straight valleys that are cliff faced in places with angular scree covered slopes in some locations.
The regolith is mainly well drained poorly sorted sandy gravel. Vegetation is thick in places with large trees and clusters of underbrush. The larger tree types include maple, birch, poplar, pine and spruce. The underbrush is mainly willow and maple.

*.—...- *.—...- ,S." EXPLORATION HISTORY
The property was staked in 1967 by Reuben Mckee of Thessalon, Ontario. Eight claims were staked in Otter Township and three adjoining claims in Casson Township immediately to the east.
Trenching was done and in 1968 an option was taken on the claims by Rio Tinto Canadian Exploration Limited(Riocanex). Riocanex did some geological investigations and had ground level magnetometer and electromagnetic surveys done. Company personnel completed a report in Septmber, 1968(see Appendix 2) in which an assay value of 7.28 percent copper over 1.53 m(5 ft) of mineralized veining was indicated. The vein thickness was estimated to be 1.53 m(5 ft) to 2.14 m(7 ft) based on pits. A vein strike length of 153 m(500 ft) to 183 m(600 ft) was indicated based on interpretation of the geophysics. Diamond drilling was recommended and two holes were drilled. The original drill core logs are not available. However, reporting by Selco Exploration in 1971(see Appendix 3) states that an intersection in the first of the two holes(H-l and H-2) showed an assay value of 2.7 percent copper over a true thickness of seven feet. Results from hole H-2 were not given.
In the fall of 1970, Selco Exploration took an option on the property which was called the Macpherson Option(see Appendix 3) although the property had been transfered to Mckee Copper Incorporated. Ground level magnetometer and electromagnetic surveys were done and four holes were drilled totaling 373 m(1224 ft) intersecting mineralized veining in some intervals(see Appendix 3, drill logs). Copper assay values ranged to a maximum of 10.39 percent over 0.46 m(1.5 ft).
In 1973, Mr. W. Doughty of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, representing Otter Mining and Exploration, drove and adit for about 85 m(280 ft) along the veining at the main showing. According to Mckee Company officials(personal communication), a 50 ton bulk sample was taken and assayed by Noranda and Copper Corporation. Noranda reported 12 percent copper and Copper Corporation 22 percent. Ore from the adit was stockpiled near the portal(Fig.7^). A 500 ton bulk sample of the stockpile was sent to Tribag Mines for custom mill ing(Appendix 4) and according to Mckee company officials(personal communication) the material assayed 4.5 percent copper.
Operations were stopped in 1974. However, the claims were retained by Mckee Copper Incorporated. REGIONAL GEOLOGY AND COPPER MINERALIZATION
The property is in the east-west trending contact zone between Early Precambrian felsic intrusive rocks of the Superior Province to the north and unconformably overlying Huronian sedimentary rocks of the Southern Province(Fig. 4; Stockwell, 1982, Fig. 20)to the south. The felsic intrusive and sedimentary rocks are cut by Early and Middle-to-Late Precambrian intermediate-to- mafic intrusive rocks(Ontario Geological Survey Map 2419). the Middle-to-Late Precambrian intrusive rocks include the widespread Nipissing Diabase dikes. Quartz veining occurs widely, commonly in association with Nipissing Diabase exposures, and many vein sections contain copper sulfide mineralization of economic significance.
LITHOLOGY AND STRUCTURE
The Early Precambrian intrusive rocks form a highly folded and faulted complex consisting of layered gneiss and massive granite (Frarey, 1977, p. 15-16). The gneiss is pink to gray and ranges in composition from granite to granodiorite and diorite. The massive granite is pink to red and shows variations to syenite and quartz monzonite.
The Huronian sedimentary rocks are part of the Penokean Fold Belt(Stockwell, 1982 Fig. 20) of the Southern Province. Exposures consist mainly of clastic rocks of the Huronian Cobalt Group in which the Gowganda Formation is the upper unit(Ontario Geological Survey Map 2419). The Gowganda Formation, consisting of conglomerates, sandstones and mudstones, is widespread and includes the sedimentary rocks in the property area(Chandler, 1976).
Lineaments occur widely in the region(Ontario Geological Survey Map 2419). Lineament trends are mainly northwest and northeast. Some lineaments represent faults of regional extent, such as the Flack Lake and Little White River faults. Thrust faulting, striking generally west to northwest, is prominent in several locations south and southwest of the property area(Frarey, 1977, p. 65).
Folding in the sedimentary rocks occurs mainly along north- northwest striking axes. In some places, axes trend northeast(Fig. 3). The folds are mainly broad open structures in contrast to the more complexly folded Early Precambrian intrusive 8 rocks. The Quirke Lake Syncline( Ontario Geological Survey Map 2419) is a prominent feature in the eastern region. The syncline opens westward and trends generally towards the Otter Township area.
COPPER MINERALIZATION AND QUARTZ VEINING
The copper sulfide mineralization occurs in various settings throughout the region(0ntario Geological Survey Map 2419; Pearson, 1980). Quartz vein deposits are the most extensive(Frarey, 1977, p. 71) and several varieties occur showing different ranges of mineralization. However, the quartz- carbonate-chalcopyrite-pyrite hematite type(qz-cb-cp-hm) is the most widespread, forming about 70 percent of the mineralized veining occurrences(Pearson, 1980, p. 236). The Bruce Mines site is the best known example of the qz-cb-cp-hm variety. Knight(1915), Collins(1925) and Moore(1929) describe several sites of past economic activity including showings in Gould, McMahon, Morin and Otter Townships.
The mineralized veining is commonly associated with Nipissing Diabase units. However, exposures of the diabase does not necessarily denote veining in the immediate vicinity(Pearson, 1980, p. 271). The qz-cb-cp-hm vein type is most commonly hosted by rocks of the Gowganda Formation, Nipissing Diabase, Early Precambrian rocks and, to a lesser extent, the Mississauga Formation. Both pre-Gowganda and post-Gowganda Formation units of the Huronian, with the exception of the Mississauga Formation, host relatively few qz-cb-cp-hm vein type(Pearson, 1980, p. 241, 242).
The veining strikes generally eastwest with some variation. Individual veins range from a few millimeters to over four meters in width. Single veins tend to pinch out within a few score meters. However, vein zones consisting of two or more units may be traceable for several kilometers and tend to follow faults or shear zones(Frarey, 1977, p. 71). The pinch and swell structure is well documented at Blind River where the veining pinches out for several hundred meters in places between mineralized sections(Knight, 1915, p. 233). Contacts of veining with wall rock are sharp and irregular and show little or no alteration (moore, 1929, p. 9). Wall rock inclusions are angular and, in many places, are elongate units generally paralleling the contact(personal observations). Quartz/the main component of the veining, is light gray to white except where red and specular hematite has given the rock a red to purplish coloring. In places, the veining is vuggy with well formed quartz crystals lining the vugs. The sulfide, mainly chalcopyrite, occurs as irregular disseminations randomly scattered in the vein rock(Frarey, 1977, p. 71) and ranges in size from small flecks to blebs two to three centimeters across. The sulfide is massive in places. Knight(1915, p. 235) noted a massive chalcopyrite unit about 30 cm(0.98 ft) wide at the Cheney showing in Gould Township. The chalcopyrite is accompanied by bornite, pyrite and malachite in some locations and less commonly by chalcocite, galena, sphalerite, pitchblende, smalite and tetrahedrite(Frarey, 1977, p. 71).
Several earlier workers attributed the mineralization and veining to hydrothermal solutions derived from gabbroic magma(Pearson, 1980, p. 272). Knight(1915), Collins(1925) and Moore(1929) noted the close association of mineralized veining and Nipissing Diabase and stipulated a genetic relationship with the veining being a later phase of the magma differentiation. According to Coll i os(1925, p. 128), diabase trending through central Otter Township has pegmatitic phases that have minor copper mineralization in some instances. A genetic relationship of the veining and diabase is further suggested by field relations in the Quirke Lake Syncline. The syncline is cored with Gowganda Formation rocks(0ntario Geological Survey Map 2419) and an increasing amount of veining westward coincides with more Nipissing Diabase(Pearson, 1980, p. 238, 244). boundary

LOCAL AND PROPERTY GEOLOGY
The claim group straddles the contact zone between Early Precambrian massive granite to the south and an eastwest trending belt of Nipissing Diabase intrusive rocks to the north(Fig. 5; Chandler, 1976). Outliers of Gowganda Formation clastic rocks overlay the massive granite in some places. (Chandler, 1976).
Mineralized quartz veining exists in several locations on the property(Fig. 6). At the Main showing in claim number SSM 282633, copper assay values from samples taken in 1990 range to 22.6 percent(see Table l, samples: 4714 - 4720, 4722, 4723).
The local host rocks consist of diabase, granite and paraconglomerate. The diabase is dark gray, fine to medium grained, massive and generally slightly magnetic. The granite is red massive, coarse grained, and contains 20 to 40 percent quartz, the dark mineral content is generally less than two percent. The paraconglomerate is massive with a dark grayish green mudstone matrix. Clasts are mainly red granite fragments which form generally about five to 25 percent of the rock.
The main showing is in the west end of an eastward draining valley(Fig. 2). The veining, on a general strike of 090 to 100 degrees, cuts across the diabase and granite which comprise the host rock locally. Veining is most extensively exposed at the adit site(Fig. 7). West of the adit, about 150 m(492 ft) along strike, mineralized veining is exposed in several places. About 416 m(1365 ft) to the east of the adit, mineralized quartz veining is exposed in a creek bed.
At the adit site, the veining is 1.2 m(3.5 ft) to 1.5 m(5.0 ft) wide and dips 80 to 85 degrees north, wall rock contacts are sharp and lack alteration. The veining is highly sheared and generally parallel to or subparallel to wall rock contacts and is brecciated in places. The veining consists of interlensing quartz, carbonate and host rock units with widely occurring grains, clots and lenses of chalcopyrite. Limonite and malachite alteration are widespread.
The stockpiled material taken from the adit consists mainly of pieces showing various amounts of sulfide mineralization. The 12 chalcopyrite content ranges to about 50 percent occurring as random grains, irregular clots and lenses. Bluish coloring in some specimens suggests bornite or altered chalcopyrite. Red and specular hematite, limonite and malachite are widespread. The carbonate occurs as light brown lenses, veins and clots of generally well formed, fine to coarse grained chrystals. Weathered carbonate surfaces are more dark brown. The quartz is light gray to whitish and translucent and is generally highly fractured.
The two pits located a few meters east of the adit portal(Fig. 7) show weathered veining about 1.5 m( 5 ft) wide and hosted in massive red granite. The contacts dip vertically to 80 degrees north and are sharp with alteration lacking. Limonite and malachite are widespread and the vein rock is pitted and friable in places. The main veining consists of quartz and carbonate lenses with irregular, massive clots of chalcopyrite with minor pyrite. The sulfide is generally pervasive ranging from random grains to about 80 percent. Random bluish coloring occurs in places suggesting bornite or altered chalcopyrite.
About 416 m(1365 ft) along strike to the east of the adit, quartz veining hosted in paraconglomerate is exposed in a creek bed. The veining shows random traces of chalcopyrite(Table l, sample 4724) with limonite and hematite. Three old pits, now filled in, are located a few meters southwest of the of the exposure.
West of the adit site, about 150 m(492 ft) along strike, mineralized veining 0.6m(2 ft.) to 0.9 m(3 ft) wide occurs as several exposures(Fig. 7) along a strike length of about 34 m(112 ft). The veining consists of interlensing quartz and carbonate with fractured paraconglomerate units and is hosted in granite and paraconglomerate. The veining is moderately magnetic in places. Mineralization(Table l, sample 4721) occurs as minor, random chalcopyrite clots and grains and limonite is widespread. Offshoots from the main veining occur in some places and trend in various directions. Exposures near the veining show minor quartz veins paralleling the main zone.
Mineralized quartz veining is exposed in claim number SSM 699929 southwest of the adit area. The veining, about 1.2 m(3.9 ft) wide, is exposed in a wooded area on the north shoulder of the eastwest trending valley and about 30 m(100 ft) south of the bush road. The veining is highly fractured and sheared and shows 13 widespread malachite alteration with minor, random chalcopyrite. Assaying(Table l, sample: 4713) shows copper values of 2.01 percent over 1.2m. According to Mckee Company of ficials(personal communication), quartz veining is also exposed in places north of this location towards the pond(Fig. 2 and 6).
SAMPLING
A total of twelve samples were taken at several vein locations and from mineralized material stockpiled during previous(1973) work at the main showing area. Assay results, sample type, claim number and a brief description are given in Table l following.

DISCUSSION Quartz veining with Chalcopyrite mineralization is exposed at several places on the property. In addition, mineralized veining occurs in neighboring areas such as the Fano occurrence(shklanka, 1969; chandler, 1976) in western Otter Township, in Morin and McMahon Townships(shklanka, 1969) farther west and at the Cheney and Gould copper showings(former mines) in Gould Township to the south. The existence of the numerous exposures in the area tends to support Pearson©s view(Pearson, 1980) that quartz veining and diabase tend to increase in amount westward along the axial trend of the Quirke Syncline axis(Fig. 4).
Vein features including mineralogy, the general eastwest strike, variation in width along strike and the close association with diabase coincides with features occurring in other quartz vein zones in the region(see regional geology such as the Cheney and Gould mine sites and Bruce Mines(Knight, 1915, p. 233).
To date work on the Mckee property has been concentrated on the most extensive exposure site located in claim number SSM 282633. Veining, generallly about 0. 9m(3 ft) to 1.5 m(5 ft) wide, has been exposed over a strike length of about 85 m(280 ft). Assay values range from traces to 22.6 percent copper have been obtained. However, several other exposures of quartz and mineralized quartz veining exist on the property and have had relatively little investigation. A similar situation existed at the Gould Copper Mine site until recent work disclosed more extensive veining than was previously known. Assay results from these locations show copper values of economic significance.
Selco Exploration(see Appendix 3) concluded that the response to geophysical signals was from the diabase(called andesite and volcanic rock in their report) which is moderately magnetic. The mineralized veining was considered to lack any response to the signals. This conclusion coincides with mapping results(see maps in Appendix 2) where the trend of the geophysical anomaly parallels the trend of diabase exposures and not the veining trend. However, magnetic sections of mineralized veining have been noted(see local and property geology) and these sections are not hosted in diabase. Consequently, geophysics may help to locate some mineralized vein zones as well as diabase units.
In view of these several factors, more widespread and varied work on the Mckee property is definitely warranted. 19
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Significant economic potential for the property is strongly suggested by several factors:
(1) At the main exposure, where veining has been exposed for about 85 m{280 ft), vein width ranges from about 0.9 m(3 ft) to 1.5 m(5 ft) and assay values obtained to date range to a maximun of 22.6 percent copper.
(2) The property is located near several other showings of copper sulfide mineralization of economic significance including the Cheney and Gould copper mining sites.
(3) Mineralized veining is exposed along strike from the zone mentioned in (1) above and in other parts of the claim group.
(4) The property is well situated in respect to access and milling facilities which exist at the Gould Copper Mine site about 12 km(7.5 mi) to the south in Gould Township.
In view of the results to date a work program is recommended to fully evaluate the economic potential of the propery. The program should include line cutting, geological mapping and prospecting, geophysics, road construction, soil sampling, stripping, trenching and sampling, and diamond drilling. 20

INTRODUCTION
Based on a recommendation by Doug Sprague, Riocanex has agreed to option a copper prospect in Otter Township, Ontario. t . - This report describes the exploration of the prospect that has-been
* ** completed to date.
PROPERTY .
The owner of the claims is Reuben McKee, c/o Demers Bay
Inn, R. R. 3, Thessalon, Ontario. The eight claims which the company has agreed to option are contiguous and occupy Lot l, Concession III in Otter Township, Sault Ste. Marie Mining Division. The numbers and the respective locations of the claims are:
SSM 89471 .Lot l, Concession III SSM 89472 M n II II n© II II SSM 89473 i SSM 89474 i n II It n II II SSM 89475 n SSM 89476 M II II II SSM 89477 II II II II SSM 89478 ti n II M
Theoretically the eastern boundary of the claims© block should lie at the boundary between Otter Township to the west, and
Township 188 to the east. However, there is some doubt whether the claim lines have baen "correctly located; the township originally was surveyed many years ago, and since then the survey lines have become obliterated by the bush.
The claims were staked last fall, and were recorded on October 3, 1967. By paying the prescribed fee to the Ontario Depart ment of Mines, Doug Sprague last month arranged an extension till April 30, 1969 to file the necessary assessment work against the claims; at the same time 40 days of work (trenching, etc.) were filed i against four of the eight claims.
To have protection eastwards, McKee has staked three additional claims in the adjoining Township 188; the claims join©.the© three * ** "" northern claims in the original block of eight. During our visit to the property these newly staked claims had not yet * been tagged.
The showing is located on claim SSM 89475; geographically it is at 830 28© west longitude, 46 O 34© north latitude, NTS 41-J-ll. The claims are near the Thessalon-Chapleau Highway (Provincial Highway 129), approximately 30 miles north of Thessalon. To reach the showing one must cross the Mississagi River, and walk approximately one mile westwards to the property. Along bush roads from north and south, vehicles can be driven to within four miles of the showing.
HISTORY AND PREVIOUS WORK
Doug Sprague first examined the showing in October of 1967. A sample across the best ©looking part of the vein assayed 7.28^ Cu, arid it was recommended to McKee that more of the structure be exposed by additional , trenching. During August of this year Sprague made a second visit to the property to examine some^ new pits opened by McKee. - - ...... - - The pits are narrow slits dug in 2 to 4 feet, of sandy rains had overburden.. At the time of our visit to the claims heavy and very little caused the pits to become partially filled with mud/ the circum of the mineralized rock could be seen in place. Under showing as stances, J will quote Doug Sprague©s description of the seen during his August visit: "Since then two more locations of the vein or structure were made by test pitting. The © © " . first of these (Pit 2), located about 40 © SW ©-. of Pit l shows heavy cpy estimated to avera-ge ; © between 205^ and 3C^ across a true width of at \ least 1*2 feet, with the south wall not exposed. . ; Another mineralized area was located 70 feet t west of Pit 2 and this exposed 3^ Cpy/1.5© and ! * 40^ Cpy/1.9© on the east wall and 20?4 Cpy/3.5© l- plus heavy gossan and 40^ Cpy/0.4 1 for follow ing 2 feet. North wall is heavily oxidized, and is altered dike, south wall appears to be granite. 2lO feet west of this pit there is a shallow trench exposing .granite which has "3" of heavy rust on top - supposedly from the nearby vein? This is upstream from the above mentioned pits.
Due to the heavy overburden encountered in the pits and elsewhere, it is obvious that further trenching by this method is not feasible, and that other methods should be employed." .

As mentioned previously, because of cave-ins in pits, very"©little of the mineralized vein could be seen during our visit to Otter Township. V Mineralized .floats that have been excavated from
RIO TldTO CANADIAN EXPLORATION LIMITED jLncij.cate that heavy massive and disseminated chalco pyrite mineralization occurs in a quartz vein, which in turn, © apparently is confined to a basic dike intruded in Archean granite. In places the chalcopyrite mineralization is associated with specular hematite. © On a broader scale the outcrop pattern in the surveyed area suggests that the mineralized dike has been intruded into a more or less east-west situated mass of Archean granite which to the north, east and south is overlain by flat lying younger Gowganda© sediments - - of Huronian age. To the north of the picket line grid the sediments, in turn, are overlain by Nipissing diabase (Post-Huronian in age)©. The granite outcropping in the vicinity of Post l, Claim SSM 89475 suggest a rugged Pre-Huronian topography, and the Huronian sediments now found in the area probably were laid down in©valleys occurring in the Archean basement complex. The following is a brief description of the rock found types in the surveyed area: GRANITE is a medium grained, reddish to pink colored rock, containing 30?6 to 50% quartz, flesh to dark colored K-feldspar, and minor amount-of mafic minerals. The rock is massive; the out- crops are well t jointed, and form ledges along the more prominent joints. In one outcrop (L6E, 1+80S) the granite contained some greenstone inclusions.
HURONIAN SEDIMENTS occurring in the mapped area belong to the Gowganda formation. Within the mapped area the majority of

Readings are recorded at 100-foot stations with the reference point midway between the two coils. 1 - -- . . .© . ~ . A typical anomaly due to © a sub-surface conductor will consist of a decrease in -the In-Phase reading and a negative Out-of- Phase reading.
As a horizontal loop unit, both coils are moved along a line, preferably cut across the strike of the formation. Penetration is approximately one half of the coil separation.
A simple conversion enables the operator to employ the SE 600 as a vertical loop unit. With this method the receiver and transmitter can be run (a) in line (b) on parallel lines 400 feet apart and (c) with the transmitter stationary and the receiver moving on adjacent lines and up to 800 feet away. This increases the depth penetration considerably. Readings are recorded in degrees of de flection and interpretation is comparable to other vertical loop units. The SE 600 is battery powered and operates on 1600 cps. © - Horizontal loop data are plotted in per cent (56) In-Phase and Out-of-Phase signal while the vertical loop results are plotted in degree (o ) of deflection resulting in crossovers over electro magnetic conduction. © © APPENDIX

GEOPHYSICAL WORK 1968 by survey carried out in The EM and magnetometer cross 600 feet long, with broad yielded a conductor a direct mag others amplitudes of 10O and overs having peak-to-peak up to 1500 gammas. netic correlation of performed a this work a Selco crew In order to confirm grid trending of this year across a similar survey in February axis. along the old conductor at 12Oo and centered toy broadside The previous conductor was not detected coil separation, and vertical loop traverses using a 2OO ft. in plan and the resulting magnetic anomaly, while similar to the north. dimensions to the old anomaly, was displaced be the Sufficient magnetite occurs in the volcanics to has a better source of the anomaly and as the later anomaly this survey was correlation with the extent of the volcanics, accepted as more reliable. from The significant result of the surveys, as is evident is that the the location of the vein on the accompanying plan, or magnetic mineralization does not produce an electromagnetic response.
DRILL RESULTS drill In the fall of 1970, Macpherson put down two short the accompany- holes to the west of the best surface showing.(see feet of quartz- int drill hole plan). Hole H-l intersected ten 2.70/6 cu (one carbonate veining and yielded values of at least in this assay result is missing but the footage is included H-2 apparently calculation) over a true width of 7.0 feet. Hole hole were not intersected the vein but values obtained in the received by SeLco. the con In May 1971, three holes were spotted to test a final check on tinuity of the mineralization and also provide the old conductor. of pit No. l, The first hole S-l, was collared 100 feet east directly beneath and did not intersect the vein. Hole S-2 passed quartz - carbona the original pit and intersected one foot of barren quartz-carbonate from veining. The third hole picked up mineralized pending assay 126.5 to 132.5. A visual estimate of the grade feet. results is 2.5-3*^, Cu over a true width of 4.5 hole to The latter intersection necessitated an additional a barren quartz- check any westerly extension. Hole S-4 intersected carbonate vein at 134.5-136.5 the old Nothing was observed in the core which could explain conductor. SIGNS AND^RECOMMEIMiJrt.ij.v-.i.^ The five holes completed on the showing demonstrate the erratic nature of the mineralization. Holes S-l, S-4, and presumably H-2 limit any strike extensions and hole S-2 precludes any depth extension. The results define a very limited narrow pocket of moderate mineralization, upon which no further work is
warranted.

More recent exploration for copper was hy diamond drilling. In 1956, Fano Mining and Exploration Incorporated drilled six holes totalling 1,003 feet to test a chalcopyrite-bearing shear zone in Archean granitic rocks in southwestern Otter Township. The best recorded analyses were 1.71 percent copper over a width of 2 feet and 3.51 percent copper over a width of 5 feet (Shklanka 1969, p.26). In 1966 to 1967, G. Poirier drilled 80 feet on the chalcopyrite-bearing quartz vein on the Huston Lake Prospect or Gould Mine (Shklanka 1969, p.26) in northwest Gould Township (Shklanka 1969, p.28). A drift is being driven at present along the vein by Gould Copper Mines Limited. In the summer of 1971, four holes totalling about 1,220 feet were drilled on the Reuben McKee Property in east Otter Township into a chalcopyrite-bearing quartz vein associated with a diabase intrusive in Archean granitic rocks (Assessment work files, ODMNA, Resident Geologist©s office, Sault Ste. Marie).
In 1956, Pluton Uranium Mines Limited drilled three holes, totalling 546 feet, into a chalcopyrite-bearing quartz vein in sandstone of the Gowganda Formation. The site is 1/4 mile west of the outlet of Wakomata Lake in Township 188 (Assessment work files, ODMNA, Resident Geologist©s office, Sault Ste. Marie) .
Ground.geophysical surveys were carried out as follows: in 1966, on the north shore of Jobammageeshig Lake by the Mississagi Mining Company Limited and on the west shore of Wakomata Lake by Jubilant Creek Mines Limited, and in 1968. on the Reuben MrKpp property by Rio Tinto Canadian Exploration Limited (Assessment work files. ODMNA, RpgiH^nt geologist©s office. Sault Ste. Mariet. Since 1968, minor staking and development work has been carried out on copper prospects in the area by R.J. Jowsey Mining Company Limited (now Open End Mines Limited) and others.
As a result of discovery of the Blind River uranium deposits, exploration for this metal has been carried out to test the Huronian rocks in the south western part of the area. To date, however, no deposits have been found. In 1966, Kerr Addison Mines Limited drilled 529 feet in four holes to test quartz pebble conglomerate in the Matinenda Formation near the centre of the south boundary of Otter Township (Assessment work files, ODMNA, Resident Geologist©s office, Sault Ste. Marie). In 1968, Imperial Oil Enterprises Limited drilled two deep holes. The first, at the southwest end of Skookum Lake in Galbraith Township, passed through Huronian sedimentary rocks to reach Archean granitic rocks at 2,443 feet. The second, on the north shore of Cooper Lake in Haughton Township, passed through 1,100 feet of basalt and 1,450 feet of Huronian sedimentary rocks before reaching Archean granitic rocks (Assessment work files, ODMNA, Resident Geologist©s office, Sault Ste.Marie).
Aerial geophysical surveys to search for radioactive anomalies were flown in 1968 by Subeo Limited and by W.D. Sutherland and associates (Assessment work files, ODMNA, Resident Geologist©s office, Sault Ste. Marie).
General Geology: Parts of the area have been mapped by Collins (1925) , Emmons (1926, Map 194A), and Frarey (1959). Granitic Archean rocks underlie the northern half of the area as well as a salient, the Haughton High, in the northeastern part of Haughton Township. The granitic rocks are dominantly pink, massive, and granular. Small pockets of porphyritic and gneissic a quartz vein about a mile (1.6 km) west on Urquhart Lake. In lot 11 and the north half of lot 12, concession VI, Gould Township, and in the north half of lot l, concession VI, Haughton Township, many other small chalcopyrite-bearing quart/, veins have been uncovered. Observations on some of the trenched and pitted veins were recorded in 1971 by R.J. Rupert, formerly the Resident Geolo gist at Sault Ste. Marie (see Regional Geologist's Files, Ontario Ministry of Nat ural Resources, Sault Ste. Marie). The Gould Mine adit lies in an east-facing cliff about 25 feet (7.6 m) high consisting of Gowganda paraconglomerate and sandstone. Mineralization occurs in a shear /one that strikes N660W, dips south at 60CS, and is probably a reverse fault. The shear zone is quartz veined, hematite stained, and is 40 feet (12 m) wide. The 10-foot (3 m) square opening of the adit mouth lies on a 6-foot (1.8 m) wide zone of the best mineralization, the southern part and northern 3 feet (0.9 m) of which contain abundant specularite. According to Shklanka, (1969) in 1967 a test pit exposed the vein for a length of 10 feet (3 m) and a width of Wt feet (l m) including a l foot (0.3 m) of massive chalcopyrite and specularite. In 1966-1967, trenching and 80 feet (24 m) of dia mond drilling in one hole was done by G. Poirier. In 1968, trenching was carried out by Gould Coppermine Limited. A general account of the work is given in the Elliot Lake Standard (1969). R.J. Rupert selected grab samples from the ore dump near the drift for assay in 1971; the results of the assays are not known (Regional Geologist's Files, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources).
Reuben McKee (7)
The mineralized quartz vein is located at the centre of lot l, concession III, Otter Township, and may be reached by crossing the Mlssissagi River with an amphibious four-wheel-drive vehicle. This mineralized quartz vein lies in an area where Early Precambrian grani tic rocks are cut by Nipissing Diabase. To the south, an outlier of Gowganda par aconglomerate partly surrounds the mineralized quartz vein at a distance of about 300 feet (90 m). An east-striking Nipissing-type diabase dike lies about 300 feet (90 m) to the north of the deposit. In 1968, R.A. Benkis and H. Beckman,(see files in Assessment Files Re search Office, Ontario Division of Mines, Toronto) noted chalcopyrite minerali zation in a 5- to 7-foot (1.5 to 2 m) wide quartz vein in a basic dike intruded into Early Precambrian granite. A magnetic and electromagnetic survey described by Benkis and Beckman indicated a 500- to 600-foot (150 to 180 m) long vein (Assessment Files Research Office, Ontario Division of Mines, Toronto). Four diamond-drill holes that were drilled in 1971 and a pit were located on the property by the writer in the summer of 1971 relative to a survey picket l -t- 00 south 6 + 00 west as follows [ according to the author]: Diamond-drill hole number l, bearing S220 E, distance 260 feet (80 m). Diamond-drill hole number 2, bearing S120 E, distance 180 feet (55 m). Diamond-drill hole number .1, tearing S220W, distance 135 feet (41.1 m). The drill hole dips 60 0 toward S34 0 . 35 Saunders Lake Area
Diamond-drill number 4, due west, distance l!)(l I'rct (.r)H m). The diamond-drill hole dips 7()0 due south. The pit [not shown on Map 2331, hack pocket | was located 'I'M feet (70 m) onabearingof SI20 W In 1971, the writer examined the diamond-drill core from the four holes that was left at the diamond-drill hole sites. Diamond-drill holes one to three were at)out .'150 feet (110 m) long, and drill hole number four about l(i.r) feel (50 m) long. They penetrated diabase and granite. Minerali/aliori in the core is as fol lows: None was observed in diamond-drill core left at hole one. Hole number two contains a ,'i-fool (0.9 m), (apparent) thickness of a quartz- carbonate vein at a length of 20'/z feet ((5.2 m) in the hole with a l inch (2..r) cm) width of 50 percent chalcopyrite Hole three contains 50 percent chalcopyrite in diabase at a length between 129 and 131 feet (39.3 and 39.9 m) and .'10 percent chalcopyrite in a quart /.-carbo nate vein between the lengths of l 34 and l 36 feet (40.H and 41 At m ). In hole four, a barren quart/.-carhonate vein was found between the lengths of 135 and 137 feet (41.1 and 41.7 m) and ata length of 162 feet (49.4 m) there oc curred '/2 inch (13 mm) of chalcopyrite. The pit covers l square yard (0.8 m-), and in it is exposed a 2Vi-foot (0.7fi m) wide vein striking northeast (63") and dipping N750 W. The vein contains two /ones l inch (25 mm) and '/2 inch (13 mm) wide respectively consisting of chalco pyrite. Many angular blocks (i inches (15 cm) to l foot (0.3 m) in maximum di mension, and which contain 50 to 75 percent chalcopyrite with minor quartz, were scattered around the pit. In 1967, the vein was exposed by R. McKee (Regional Geologist's Files, Min istry of Natural Resources, Sault Ste. Marie). From the condition of the dia mond-drill core the author considers that the four diamond-drill holes described above were drilled in 1971.
Resource Exploration and Development Company Limited (6)
Resource Exploration and Development Company of Toronto hold several claims in northwestern Gould Township that include the Cheney Mine. The Cheney Mine is located in lot 7, concession V, Gould Township '/z mile (0.8 km) south of Chub Lake. The head frame is located within 300 feet (90 m) of Highway 129 on the west side of the road. The mine lies within a Gowganda paraconglomerate member, which in cludes subordinate sandstone and orthoconglomerate dipping 100S and N. A quartz vein about 100 feet (30 m) east of the mine strikes east and dips 500S. A quartz vein 700 feet (210 m) southwest of the mine strikes N800 W and dips fK+i 65"S. The mineralized vein in the mine is reported by Shklanka (1969) to strike if ?v?. east and dip 45" to 600S. It is cut by later diabase dikes. Chalcopyrite, pyrite, specularite, siderite or ankerite, barite, and calcite occur in the veins. The following account is condensed from Shklanka 1969, p.26-27: The zone has been traced by diamond drilling to a depth of 460 feet (140 m) and on the surface it has been traced 4,000 feet (1,200 m) along strike.
