The Cultural Construction and Literary Representation of National Characters. Amsterdam: Rodopi, 2007) Stereotyping is a natural ordering function of the human and social mind. Stereotypes make reality easier to deal with because they simplify the complexities that make people unique, and this simplification reflects important beliefs and values as well. People have a rich variety of beliefs about typical members of groups including beliefs about traits, behaviours and values of a typical group member. Social identity theory (Tajfel 1978) considers that our relation to the different social or ethnic categories is inherently asymmetrical. Categorizing people according to their ethnic or national affiliation affects the judgment of their features. The ethnic group we belong to is experienced to be “ingroup biased”, continuously being overestimated as opposed to the outgroup. This asymmetrical relation leads to the emergence of national or ethnic stereotypes. As a result, it is an old and widespread tendency that different societies, races or “nations” are endowed with certain features or even characters. It seems that different people’s relationship to other cultures is characterised by ethnocentrism, i.e. anything that is different from one’s own patterns, is considered to be “other”, strange, anomalous or unique. In several languages, the critical analysis of national stereotypes that appear in literature and in other forms of cultural representation is called imagology or image studies. This technical neologism indicates a relatively novel domain of science that studies the national stereotypes as presented in literature and culture. -

Medieval Texts in Translation Raymond "The Palmer" (Palmario or Palmerio) of Piacenza (d. 1200) is a good example of a medieval pilgrim saint who, after the death of his wife and five children, committed himself to an endless series of pilgrimages to various shrines, including Jerusalem. Raymond ultimately suspended his itinerant life, dedicating himself to the relief of the poor and sick in his native Piacenza. This transformation made him typical of the lay "civic saints" who dominated Italian hagiography from the late twelfth to the late thirteenth centuries. The Life of Raymond “the Palmer,” written in Latin by Rufino, then translated anonymously into Italian, and now newly rendered into Latin, faithfully restored from the Italian manuscript of the archive of the nuns of St. Raymond of Piacenza.[1] The author’s preface and the dedication of the work: To the humble servants of Jesus Christ, the poor[2] of the hospital of our most blessed father Raymond “the Palmer,”[3] I, Rufino, the least of the masters in the Canonry of the Twelve Apostles, greet you. -

JOAN SEGARRA PIJUAN was born in Tárrega, Spain on June 29, 1926. He joined the Society of Jesus in 1942. Seventeen years later he completed his religious and cultural education. On July 29, 1956 – in the Year of Saint Ignatius – he was ordained at the cathedral in Manresa. He has spent much of his life in Veruela, Bar- celona, Sant Cugat del Vallès, Palma (Majorca), Raimat, Rome and Man- resa and has also lived in a number of countries in Central and South Ameri- ca, Africa and Europe. He has always been interested in spi- ritual theology and the study of Saint Ignatius of Loyola. SAINT IGNA- TIUS AND MANRESA describes the Saint’s sojourn here in a simple, rea- dable style. The footnotes and exten- sive bibliography will be of particular interest to scholars wishing the study the life of St. Ignatius in greater de- tail. This book deals only with the months Saint Ignatius spent in Man- resa, which may have been the most interesting part of his life: the months of his pilgrimage and his mystical en- lightenments. Manresa is at the heart of the Pilgrim’s stay in Catalonia because “between Ignatius and Man- resa there is a bond that nothing can break” (Torras y Bages). BURIAL CUSTOMS IN THE 10th–11th CENTURIES IN TRANSYLVANIA, CRIŞANA AND BANAT* ERWIN GÁLL To Dr. Radu Harhoiu for his 60th birthday The examination of burial customs in the 10th–11th centuries in Transylvania, Crişana and Banat has almost no tradition. Beside the works of Gyula László written during World War II (in which he could only examine the phenomena of the Cluj-Napoca–Zápolya Street cemetery),1 no one has dealt with burial customs extensively. The Hungarian scientific literature slowly lost interest in the problem of the Transylvanian conquest,2 and consequently no one treated burial customs to any great depth.3 Romanian archaeology has pursued two goals: to prove the Daco-Romanic continuity4 and the existence of the Romanian, pre-Hungarian knezates in Transylvania, Banat and Crişana.5 Therefore, the presentation and the analysis of burial customs in the 10th–11th centuries in Transylvania, Banat and Crişana have not been the subject of any study to date. THE GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BURIALS The most important elements in defining and analysing the cultural horizon of the 10th–11th centuries in Transylvania, Crişana and Banat are the burial customs. The burial customs are first the emotional reaction of relatives, members of family at the time of death. The most important condition of its manifestation is the economic status of the community, the family and the individual. It can be clearly seen in the quantity and quality of ritual sacrifices, weapons and dress accessories deposited in the grave. Naturally, the quantity and quality depend largely on the political-economic status of the specific region as well as on the importance of the economic roads passing through that region, all which are clearly manifested in the graves. -

Their houses are either razed to the ground or assigned together with their lands and properties to the removing Serbians from Bosnia. The free nations, the UN and the countries united in it forgive the sacrifice and ruining of the Hungarians. They do not do anything so that the Hungarians suffering enormous losses in human life could stay on the land of their ancestors. The number of the Hungarian martyrs is increasing day by day. How long does the democratic public opinion of the World have patience? This report is about the slaughtering and expelling of the Hungarian minority in Serbia. HISTORICAL INFORMATION The Hungarian Republic is situated along the middle reaches of the rivers Danube and Tisza, between 45 45'-48' N and 16’5'-22 55' E in the middle of the Carpathian Basin in Central Europe enclosed by the parts of the Alps, Carpathians and Dinaric mountains. More than the half of its whole surface is a plain not higher than 200 m above sea level, resp. it is Lowland. -

The Mysterious Identity of Saint George
THE MYSTERIOUS IDENTITY OF SAINT GEORGE Introduction Unlike the patron saints, Andrew of Scotland, David of Wales and Patrick of Ireland, who are all historically recognizable figures, St George of England is a patron saint with no immediately apparent historical provenance. Apart from what seems to begin with 5th-century folklore, most reference books relate that there are no contemporary or other historical documents relating to St George. Under such circumstances, it is rather odd that George became not only the patron saint of England, but also of numerous other countries, orders and occupations.1 The most perplexing anomaly is that, although George rose to prominence in the saintly ranks, he was originally deemed personally unsuitable by the Vatican, and the written accounts of his life were proscribed by Pope Gelasius in AD 496. But why would Gelasius have denounced George as a known individual if he were mythical as so often supposed? Clearly, there was an aspect of George’s character of which the Church did not approve – an aspect that was subsequently veiled and conveniently forgotten as the centuries passed. In this regard, the literature concerning the saint identifies an evolutionary strategy of character manipulation through more than 1,000 years. This ongoing creation of an acceptable heritage for George actually led to the emergence of an entirely mythical figure, in the course of which the real history of the man was lost. Original Records The oldest extant Greek manuscript of George’s tradition dates back to the early 5th century, and a revised Latin version known as the Acta Sancti Georgii was circulating in the 6th century.
