Mr Louis Goldschmidt, previously a maker of socks in his native Germany and tired of producing bulky 1937 uncomfortable socks for men, believes that fine, seamless, fancy socks will be in high demand

Louis was right! The Pantherella name was officially registered and the company settled into its new home on Hallaton Street in Leicester, England, where 1945 it remains to this day

After being floated on the stock exchange in the 1980s, Pantherella is bought by historic British brand Burberry, and continues its production of luxurious 1990 socks for iconic stores such as Harrods and Selfridges

Pantherella becomes part of the HJ Sock Group. The Hall family have been involved with the manufacture of socks in Leicestershire since 2001 ‘Honest John’ Hall started making hosiery in 1882

Pantherella acquires iconic leisure sock brand Scott-Nichol, which was originally founded in the 1930s by John Scott-Nichol, whose family had over 2006 7 centuries of experience in the Scottish wool trade

Pantherella and HJ Hall combine their expertise under one roof at Hallaton Street for the first time, to 2016 become Pantherella International Group Limited, the UK’s largest designer and maker of high quality socks MADE IN ENGLAND

01 DESIGN 02 KNITTING Working from seasonal colour & pattern Using single or double cylinder machines, in trends, our experienced sock designers 96, 176, 200 or 240 needle counts, each sock produce CADs. Our Design & Development is carefully knitted to our exact team then knit these into working samples specifications, from the world’s finest yarns

03 04 LINKING 03 QC CHECKS Each and every Pantherella sock features a fine-linked toe seam for added comfort and durability. This is done by our team of highly skilled hand-linkers, and also by machine

05 TURNING 05 Post-linking the socks are inside out so each one is hand turned the right way round so they are ready for the next process 06 FINISHING Next, the socks are washed and ironed using our industrial washers, driers and special heated leg formes

08 PACKAGING 07 PAIRING Once paired, the socks have our Pantherella branded rider ticket applied by hand before being carefully packed into boxes to be shipped all around the world

CASHMERE SOCKS

The ultimate in luxury hosiery, cashmere socks are exquisitely soft and approximately three times warmer than socks made from sheep’s wool. We source our cashmere from the finest Italian mills and our leisure weight yarn is woollen spun using the finest grade of cashmere knitted with nylon to give our socks extra durability and stretch.

Cashmere is one of the finest natural fibres in the world and is obtained from the hair of cashmere goats. In Spring, as the goats moult for summer, they are combed by hand to remove their ultra-fine undercoat. These combings are then washed and sorted - What is left is pure cashmere. This laborious process results in a fibre that is exceptionally exquisite and rare. It therefore commands a higher price than more easily obtained fibres.

SILK SOCKS

To knit Pantherella silk socks we use Swiss ‘Tram’ silk which is a yarn formed by twisting 2 to 3 strands together to produce a thread with a shimmering appearance, excellent wearability and good moisture absorption.

Silk is a naturally strong and lustrous fibre harvested in China from the continuous filament cocoon of the Mulberry silkworm. The shiny appearance of silk is due to the triangular prism-like structure of the silk fibre, which refracts incoming light at different angles.

Even in warm conditions, our ultra-sheer silk socks remain cool and comfortable to wear, making them the ultimate evening dress sock.

ESCORIAL WOOL SOCKS

Exclusively spun in Italy for Pantherella to a special count for knitting into socks, Escorial is a rare and luxurious wool from a small sheep originating from the Spanish Royal flocks of El Escorial. Today these sheep are only to be found in small numbers in Australia and New Zealand.

The Escorial fibre is naturally curly, like a coiled spring, which means that air is trapped between each strand providing greater bounce and insulation than ‘standard’ sheep’s wool.

This natural flexible characteristic results in a warm yet breathable, fine yet durable, extremely soft yarn with a natural elasticity which, when knitted into socks, affords a superb comfort and fit.

Made from the ‘Cashmere of Cotton’, Pantherella’s Sea Island Cotton socks are an affordable taste of luxury.

Genuine West Indian Sea Island cotton is cultivated only in the perfect conditions of the British West Indies and rigorously certified by the WISICA (West Indian Sea Island Cotton Association). This rare and expensive raw material has the longest and finest cotton staple available which gives it its characteristic durability and silky, soft feel.

EGYPTIAN COTTON SOCKS

Pantherella use the finest Italian sourced, extra-long staple Egyptian grown cotton.

The extra-long staple determines the highest quality of cotton, as it uses uniform lengths of fibres. This yarn is composed of two strands that are twisted together with an extra twist per inch than lesser quality cottons, creating one single, strong thread.

For our Fil d’Ecosse socks, once spun, the cotton goes through a process of Mercerisation whereby it is passed through a flame at high speed, to eliminate any stray surface fibres. The result is a shiny, shrink & pill resistant yarn that absorbs dye brilliantly while maintaining its silky lustre.

For our ‘Compact Spun’ Cotton socks, innovations in spinning technology have resulted in a completely rounded yarn with zero pilling, which knits into wonderfully soft and durable socks.

MERINO WOOL SOCKS

The coat of the Merino breed of sheep is synonymous with the production of fine, soft wool. When spun into socks it also provides warmth, without overheating the wearer and draws moisture away from the skin for all year round comfort.

Standard Merino wool has a fibre diameter around 25 microns. Here at Pantherella we use a 19.5 micron yarn which is classed as ‘superfine’ and is exclusively spun with 10% nylon which gives it extra durability for everyday wear.

All the Merino wool used by Pantherella is worsted spun which ensures strength and the long fibres help to give our socks their characteristic soft surface handle.
