INSTRUCTIONS BACKGROUND Four times a year, since 1976, Parabola Magazine has brought us essays, fiction, reviews, interviews and artwork from around the world. Each issue has focused on one topic or theme to be explored from a variety of perspectives. We believe that Parabola Magazine issues from 40 years ago continue to be highly relevant to today’s seekers of truth. Recognizing that the many treasures buried in Parabola Magazine were indeed buried, we offer this searchable electronic index of every issue published by the Society for the Study of Myth and Tradition, Inc. It is our intent to continually update this file as new issues are released. THE PRODUCT The Topical Index lists each issue of Parabola Magazine with the topical description (assigned by Parabola), date, and volume/issue number. DESCRIPTORS *Drama; *Learning Processes; Metaphors; Qualitative Research; *Scholarship ABSTRACT Using qualitative and interpretive methodologies, this dissertation analyzed Richard Courtney's writings to interpret his basic ideas on learning through drama. It focused on later writings (1989, 1990, 1995, 1997) in which Courtney distilled ideas he had been working on for as many as 30 years. It approached Courtney's texts using dramatistic metaphors which concretized his predominantly abstract writings. These metaphors focused on finding the basic elements of a drama: the setting, the act, the actor, and the Other. Through the lenses afforded by these metaphors, the thesis examined Courtney's wide-ranging, eclectic and often imprecise ideas to distill major themes. Courtney used notions like metaphor, symbol, ritual, Being, mind, perspective, oscillation and quaternity with apparently shifting definitions and loosely circumscribed meanings. It collected and analyzed Courtney's meanings recursively, both distilling Courtney's meanings and expanding them through concrete hypothetical examples. Courtney wrote about drama in abstract terms, using notions he had garnered from other disciplines to describe the process of learning through drama. The final construction that emerged in this dissertation represents the experience of the actor/learner: it is concentric, radiating from a nub which represents the feelings and imagination of the actor.

  • Hakuin on Kensho: the Four Ways of Knowing/Edited with Commentary by Albert Low.—1St Ed
    ABOUT THE BOOK Kensho is the Zen experience of waking up to one’s own true nature—of understanding oneself to be not different from the Buddha-nature that pervades all existence. The Japanese Zen Master Hakuin (1689–1769) considered the experience to be essential. In his autobiography he says: “Anyone who would call himself a member of the Zen family must first achieve kensho- realization of the Buddha’s way. If a person who has not achieved kensho says he is a follower of Zen, he is an outrageous fraud. A swindler pure and simple.” Hakuin’s short text on kensho, “Four Ways of Knowing of an Awakened Person,” is a little-known Zen classic. The “four ways” he describes include the way of knowing of the Great Perfect Mirror, the way of knowing equality, the way of knowing by differentiation, and the way of the perfection of action. Rather than simply being methods for “checking” for enlightenment in oneself, these ways ultimately exemplify Zen practice. Albert Low has provided careful, line-by-line commentary for the text that illuminates its profound wisdom and makes it an inspiration for deeper spiritual practice. ALBERT LOW holds degrees in philosophy and psychology, and was for many years a management consultant, lecturing widely on organizational dynamics. He studied Zen under Roshi Philip Kapleau, author of The Three Pillars of Zen, receiving transmission as a teacher in 1986. He is currently director and guiding teacher of the Montreal Zen Centre. He is the author of several books, including Zen and Creative Management and The Iron Cow of Zen.

    JOCP132 9/3/2003 5:45 PM Page 469 karl-heinz pohl PLAY-THING OF THE TIMES: CRITICAL REVIEW OF THE RECEPTION OF DAOISM IN THE WEST1 The Euro-Dao that can be spoken of is not the true Euro-Dao, etc. —Peter Sloterdijk As valid as the first sentence of the Daodejing may be to any follower of the Dao—the Dao that can be spoken of is not an eternal truth but always mere interpretation—as meaningful seems to be Sloterdijk’s pun on this Daoist key notion to the chronicler of the Dao reception in the West. For about 200 years, interpreters from the European cultural background have appropriated the Far Eastern import in amazingly different ways, following, on the one hand, and as was to be expected, mostly the prevailing zeitgeist. On the other hand, the reception, of course, was also influenced by the continuously devel- oping knowledge in this field through translations and scholarly research by Sinologists. As will be shown below, an increase in knowl- edge about Daoism, however, did not necessarily lead to a deeper understanding of the matter. Yet this intellectual pitfall is built into the Daoist system of thought:Those who too cleverly try to probe into its teaching will be caught in the “fish trap” of words (Zhuangzi), the only “way” to the true Dao probably being silence. Hence, the unearthing of the true “Euro-Daoism” shall not and cannot be the object of this study.The point is rather to follow—some- what in the vein of a “Derri-Daoism”—the “trace” that Daoism has left in Europe and in North America during the past 200 years.
