Table of Contents TABLE OF CONTENTS Assembled by the Gurdjieff Foundation of Illinois with permission from The Society for the Study of Myth and Tradition, Inc. INSTRUCTIONS BACKGROUND Four times a year, since 1976, Parabola Magazine has brought us essays, fiction, reviews, interviews and artwork from around the world. Each issue has focused on one topic or theme to be explored from a variety of perspectives. We believe that Parabola Magazine issues from 40 years ago continue to be highly relevant to today’s seekers of truth. Recognizing that the many treasures buried in Parabola Magazine were indeed buried, we offer this searchable electronic index of every issue published by the Society for the Study of Myth and Tradition, Inc. It is our intent to continually update this file as new issues are released. THE PRODUCT The Topical Index lists each issue of Parabola Magazine with the topical description (assigned by Parabola), date, and volume/issue number. The Tables of Content have been enhanced to include significant items that were not identified on the printed Table of Contents pages including many book reviews which are often fascinating essays. SPECIAL FEATURES 1. If you click on a topic name in the Topical Index you will be taken instantly to the corresponding Table of Contents page. Simply scroll up to return to the Topical Index. 2. At the top of each Table of Contents page, you may click this icon: In a few seconds, you will be taken to the page on Parabola’s website where, with a few clicks, you may buy a hard copy or digital version of that issue. 3. Using your browser’s “Find” feature, you can locate authors, titles, or any word or phrase throughout all of the Table of Contents pages. So, for example, if you entered Needleman, you will quickly receive a list of Table of Contents pages referencing Jacob Needleman including articles and book review from 1985, and another article from 2015. By clicking on any of the items on the list, you will go to the appropriate Table of Contents page. A. How to get to the “Find” feature depends on your operating system. You may need to click on a 3-dot or 3- parallel-line symbol in the upper right corner of your screen and then click “Find.” B. Experiment with your search criteria for the best results. For example, if you were to enter the word pain, you would find several instances of painting! Hitting your space bar after pain will eliminate some unwanted “hits.” Topical Index Topic Volume/ DATE Topic Volume/ DATE Number Number The Hero 1/1 Winter 1976 The Knight and the Hermit 12/1 Spring 1987 Magic 1/2 Spring 1976 Addiction 12/2 Summer 1987 Initiation 1/3 Summer 1976 Forgiveness 12/3 Fall 1987 Rites of Passage 1/4 Fall 1976 The Sense of Humor 12/4 Winter 1987 Death 2/1 Winter 1977 The Creative Response 13/1 Spring 1988 Creation 2/2 Spring 1977 Repetition and Renewal 13/2 Summer 1988 Cosmology 2/3 Summer 1977 Questions 13/3 Fall 1988 Relationships 2/4 Fall 1977 The Mountain 13/4 Winter 1988 Sacred Space 3/1 Spring 1978 Disciples and Discipline 14/1 Spring 1989 Sacrifice and 3/2 Summer 1978 Tradition and Transmission 14/2 Summer 1989 Transformation Inner Alchemy 3/3 Fall 1978 The Tree of Life 14/3 Fall 1989 Androgyny 3/4 Winter 1978 Triad 14/4 Winter 1989 The Trickster 4/1 Spring 1979 Time and Presence 15/1 Spring 1990 Sacred Dance 4/2 Summer 1979 Attention 15/2 Summer 1990 The Child 4/3 Fall 1979 Liberation 15/3 Fall 1990 Storytelling and 4/4 Winter 1979 Hospitality 15/4 Winter 1990 Education The Old Ones 5/1 Spring 1980 Money 16/1 Spring 1991 Music, Sound, Silence 5/2 Summer 1980 The Hunter 16/2 Summer 1991 Obstacles 5/3 Fall 1980 Craft 16/3 Fall 1991 Woman 5/4 Winter 1980 The Golden Mean 16/4 Winter 1991 Earth and Spirit 6/1 Spring 1981 Solitude and Community 17/1 Spring 1992 The Dream of Progress 6/2 Summer 1981 Labyrinth 17/2 Summer 1992 Mask & Metaphor 6/3 Fall 1981 The Oral Tradition 17/3 Fall 1992 Demons 6/4 Winter 1981 Power and Energy 17/4 Winter 1992 Sleep 7/1 Spring 1982 Healing 18/1 Spring 1993 Dreams and Seeing 7/2 Summer 1982 Place and Space 18/2 Summer 1993 Ceremonies 7/3 Fall 1982 Crossroads 18/3 Fall 1993 Holy War 7/4 Winter 1982 The City 18/4 Winter 1993 Guilt 8/1 Spring 1983 The Call 19/1 Spring 1994 Animals 8/2 Summer 1983 Twins 19/2 Summer 1994 Words of Power 8/3 Fall 1983 Clothing 19/3 Fall 1994 Sun and Moon 8/4 Winter 1983 Hidden Treasure 19/4 Winter 1994 Hierarchy 9/1 Spring 1984 Earth, Air, Fire, Water 20/1 Spring 1995 Theft 9/2 Summer 1984 The Stranger 20/2 Summer 1995 Pilgrimage 9/3 Fall 1984 Language and Meaning 20/3 Fall 1995 Food 9/4 Winter 1984 Eros 20/4 Winter 1995 Wholeness 10/1 Spring 1985 Prophets and Prophecy 21/1 Spring 1996 Exile 10/2 Summer 1985 The Soul 21/2 Summer 1996 The Body 10/3 Fall 1985 Peace 21/3 Fall 1996 The Seven Deadly Sins 10/4 Winter 1985 Play and Work 21/4 Winter 1996 The Witness 11/1 Spring 1986 Ways of Knowing 22/1 Spring 1997 Mirrors 11/2 Summer 1986 The Shadow 22/2 Summer 1997 Sadness 11/3 Fall 1986 Conscience and Consciousness 22/3 Fall 1997 Memory and Forgetting 11/4 Winter 1986 Miracles 22/4 Winter 1997 2. • Just This Is It: Dongshan and the Practice of Suchness / Taigen Dan Leighton
“What a delight to have this thorough, wise, and deep work on the teaching of Zen Master Dongshan from the pen of Taigen Dan Leighton! As always, he relates his discussion of traditional Zen materials to contemporary social, ecological, and political issues, bringing up, among many others, Jack London, Lewis Carroll, echinoderms, and, of course, his beloved Bob Dylan. This is a must-have book for all serious students of Zen. It is an education in itself.” —Norman Fischer, author of Training in Compassion: Zen Teachings on the Practice of Lojong “A masterful exposition of the life and teachings of Chinese Chan master Dongshan, the ninth century founder of the Caodong school, later transmitted by Dōgen to Japan as the Sōtō sect. Leighton carefully examines in ways that are true to the traditional sources yet have a distinctively contemporary flavor a variety of material attributed to Dongshan. Leighton is masterful in weaving together specific approaches evoked through stories about and sayings by Dongshan to create a powerful and inspiring religious vision that is useful for students and researchers as well as practitioners of Zen. Through his thoughtful reflections, Leighton brings to light the panoramic approach to kōans characteristic of this lineage, including the works of Dōgen. This book also serves as a significant contribution to Dōgen studies, brilliantly explicating his views throughout.” —Steven Heine, author of Did Dōgen Go to China? What He Wrote and When He Wrote It “In his wonderful new book, Just This Is It, Buddhist scholar and teacher Taigen Dan Leighton launches a fresh inquiry into the Zen teachings of Dongshan, drawing new relevance from these ancient tales.

  • The Player and the Playing: an Interpretive Study of Richard
DOCUMENT RESUME ED 442 143 CS 510 330 AUTHOR Henry, Mallika TITLE The Player and the Playing: AA Interpretive Study of Richard Courtney's Texts on Learning through Drama. PUB DATE 1999-00-00 NOTE 411p.; Doctoral dissertation, School of Education, New York University. PUB TYPE Dissertations/Theses Doctoral Dissertations (041) EDRS PRICE MFO1 /PC17 Plus Postage. DESCRIPTORS *Drama; *Learning Processes; Metaphors; Qualitative Research; *Scholarship ABSTRACT Using qualitative and interpretive methodologies, this dissertation analyzed Richard Courtney's writings to interpret his basic ideas on learning through drama. It focused on later writings (1989, 1990, 1995, 1997) in which Courtney distilled ideas he had been working on for as many as 30 years. It approached Courtney's texts using dramatistic metaphors which concretized his predominantly abstract writings. These metaphors focused on finding the basic elements of a drama: the setting, the act, the actor, and the Other. Through the lenses afforded by these metaphors, the thesis examined Courtney's wide-ranging, eclectic and often imprecise ideas to distill major themes. Courtney used notions like metaphor, symbol, ritual, Being, mind, perspective, oscillation and quaternity with apparently shifting definitions and loosely circumscribed meanings. It collected and analyzed Courtney's meanings recursively, both distilling Courtney's meanings and expanding them through concrete hypothetical examples. Courtney wrote about drama in abstract terms, using notions he had garnered from other disciplines to describe the process of learning through drama. The final construction that emerged in this dissertation represents the experience of the actor/learner: it is concentric, radiating from a nub which represents the feelings and imagination of the actor.

  • Pioneering Cultural Initiatives by Esalen Centers for Theory
Esalen’s Half-Century of Pioneering Cultural Initiatives 1962 to 2012 For more information, please contact: Jane Hartford, Director of Development Center for Theory & Research and Special Projects Special Assistant to the Cofounder and Chairman Emeritus Michael Murphy Esalen Institute 1001 Bridgeway #247 Sausalito, CA 94965 415-459-5438 i Preface Most of us know Esalen mainly through public workshops advertised in the catalog. But there is another, usually quieter, Esalen that’s by invitation only: the hundreds of private initiatives sponsored now by Esalen’s Center for Theory and Research (CTR). Though not well publicized, this other Esalen has had a major impact on America and the world at large. From its programs in citizen diplomacy to its pioneering role in holistic health; from physics and philosophy to psychology, education and religion, Esalen has exercised a significant influence on our culture and society. CTR sponsors work in fields that think tanks and universities typically ignore, either because those fields are too controversial, too new, or because they fall between disciplinary silos. These initiatives have included diplomats and political leaders, such as Joseph Montville, the influential pioneer of citizen diplomacy, Jack Matlock and Arthur Hartman, former Ambassadors to the Soviet Union, and Claiborne Pell, former Chairman of the U.S. Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee; eminent Russian cultural leaders Vladimir Pozner, Sergei Kapitsa, and Victor Erofeyev; astronaut Rusty Schweickart; philosophers Jay Ogilvy, Sam

  • Hakuin on Kensho: the Four Ways of Knowing/Edited with Commentary by Albert Low.—1St Ed
ABOUT THE BOOK Kensho is the Zen experience of waking up to one’s own true nature—of understanding oneself to be not different from the Buddha-nature that pervades all existence. The Japanese Zen Master Hakuin (1689–1769) considered the experience to be essential. In his autobiography he says: “Anyone who would call himself a member of the Zen family must first achieve kensho- realization of the Buddha’s way. If a person who has not achieved kensho says he is a follower of Zen, he is an outrageous fraud. A swindler pure and simple.” Hakuin’s short text on kensho, “Four Ways of Knowing of an Awakened Person,” is a little-known Zen classic. The “four ways” he describes include the way of knowing of the Great Perfect Mirror, the way of knowing equality, the way of knowing by differentiation, and the way of the perfection of action. Rather than simply being methods for “checking” for enlightenment in oneself, these ways ultimately exemplify Zen practice. Albert Low has provided careful, line-by-line commentary for the text that illuminates its profound wisdom and makes it an inspiration for deeper spiritual practice. ALBERT LOW holds degrees in philosophy and psychology, and was for many years a management consultant, lecturing widely on organizational dynamics. He studied Zen under Roshi Philip Kapleau, author of The Three Pillars of Zen, receiving transmission as a teacher in 1986. He is currently director and guiding teacher of the Montreal Zen Centre. He is the author of several books, including Zen and Creative Management and The Iron Cow of Zen.

The books you read will be used in your English class during the first few weeks of the first trimester. As you read, we urge you to remember that the art of reading is a creative act, a collaboration between reader and writer. Hold a dialogue with these books: question, argue, disagree; underline those passages that exhilarate you as well as those that infuriate you. Keep a notebook to jot down your imme- diate responses to each of these works and write questions that you want to discuss in your English classes. Encourage your family and friends to join you in these reading experiences. A number of the books on this list have been made into movies, many of them wonderful in their own right. Seeing a movie instead of reading the book, however, will not prepare you for your teacher’s assignment related to that book, nor will it replace the unique experience of interacting with a specific text.

  • Play-Thing of the Times: Critical Review of the Reception of Daoism in the West1

For about 200 years, interpreters from the European cultural background have appropriated the Far Eastern import in amazingly different ways, following, on the one hand, and as was to be expected, mostly the prevailing zeitgeist. On the other hand, the reception, of course, was also influenced by the continuously devel- oping knowledge in this field through translations and scholarly research by Sinologists. As will be shown below, an increase in knowl- edge about Daoism, however, did not necessarily lead to a deeper understanding of the matter. Yet this intellectual pitfall is built into the Daoist system of thought:Those who too cleverly try to probe into its teaching will be caught in the “fish trap” of words (Zhuangzi), the only “way” to the true Dao probably being silence. Hence, the unearthing of the true “Euro-Daoism” shall not and cannot be the object of this study. The point is rather to follow—some- what in the vein of a “Derri-Daoism”—the “trace” that Daoism has left in Europe and in North America during the past 200 years.
