On one hand, there is the pride, excitement, and immeasurable hope that come with the culmination of years of effort and success at the University of Connecticut. But on the other hand, there is the recognition that this year is different. For the first time since 1914, the University of Connecticut is conferring its graduate and undergraduate degrees without our traditional ceremonies. It is my sincere hope that you see this moment as an opportunity rather than a misfortune. As the Greek Stoic philosopher Epictetus observed, “Difficulties show us who we are.” This year our University, our state, our nation, and indeed our world have faced unprecedented difficulties. And now, as you go onward to the next stage of your journey, you have the opportunity to show what you have become in your time at UConn. Remember that the purpose of higher education is not confined to academic achievement; it is also intended to draw from within those essential qualities that make each of us an engaged, fully-formed individual – and a good citizen. HOWARD: Yeah, so I wanted to begin by just asking you to tell us your story. This is actually our second time recording. I had some technical difficulties, and I realized as I was biking from my little shed to a different office that the reason I wanted you to tell that story in particular is that your concepts and ideas and things you put together seemed to me so creative. They’re so far beyond anything that I thought about these topics that I’d thought about for a long time that I was really interested in what were the influences that allowed you to see things from such a broad perspective. Tell us how you got to where you are now. WILL: Yeah, incidentally, that tends to be how I think for better or worse. I tend to be a great big-picture visionary sort of thing and not so good at nuts and bolts and details, and linking them together is often a problem for me. Well, when I was a teenager and first left home to… went away from home, my first job was in a mining business. I worked for a couple of mining companies prospecting for copper, lead, and zinc and so on, and it got old pretty fast. I decided I didn’t wanna have anything to do with it. I decided I was more interested in something that involved more recycling and was a little more sustainable.

Sevilla* Introduction Japanese intellectual culture is a mélange of many schools of thought— Shinto, many forms of Buddhism, Confucianism, and so on. However, these schools of thought are distinct in approach and focus, and key ideas of one school may even be found to be in contradiction with the key ideas of other schools of thought. Many have deliberately tried, with varying degrees of success, to reconcile these schools of thought, aca- demically, politically, and so forth. But amidst these attempts, one that stands out for its uncontrived naturalness and vitality is that of Zen Mas- ter Shōsan. Suzuki Shōsan (鈴木正三, 1579-1655) was a samurai serving under the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. As your feedback is always important to us, we spent a large part of the evening going through the evaluations. We deliberated some reoccurring issues, and did some preliminary brainstorming for possible solutions. Hot topics that we hope to address are more porta potties for the campers, more workshops for the entire family, the issue of loud children in work- shops and how to deal with them, and more exciting workshops for the 11-12 year olds so they don’t try to defect to the teen conference. We may well move the contradance to Friday night, and request speak- ers for the back of the auditorium on keynote night.     Fall 1999 Vol. 2, No. 42 Publication of the Northeast Organic Farming Association ISSN 1077-2294 NOFA Holds Its 25th Annual Summer Conference and Celebration of Rural Life by Julie Rawson It is somehow auspicious when one of the worst droughts of the century takes a break and lets the heaven flow forth on the weekend of the NOFA Conference. And we were all happy, even those who slept outside in it and had very wet tents! This is the second time in the past 8 or so years when a drought period ended on the weekend of the conference. The last time, folks were elated also. Almost 1200 people attended this year’s confer- ence, 532 from Massachusetts (378 of whom were NOFA members), 164 from NY (145 members), 113 from CT (97 members), 83 from VT (70 members), 55 from NH (43 members), 43 from NJ (35 members), and 24 from RI (all members). In addition we got 16 from Maine, 13 from Pennsyl- vania, and scattered attendees from Michigan, Kentucky, Florida, the Virgin Islands, and one farm intern from Sweden. Though it did rain for large parts of the weekend, it cleared off and was beautiful for this year’s very spirited fair.
