"Ruben Salazar Day" April 28, 2014 \ WHEREAS, Ruben Salazar began his pioneering journalism career at the EI Paso Herald-Post, focusing on issues affecting the Latino ; and

WHEREAS, Ruben Salazar covered the Mexican-American community as a reporter for the Los Angeles Times and maintained a column at the Times, giving him the opportunity to address the paper's largely white readership, bridging the gap between the old ideology of assimilation and the new chicanismo; and

WHEREAS, Ruben Salazar's focus on the Mexican-American community paved the way for other Mexican-American journalists; and continued to report and advocate for the Mexican- American community as the news director for the Spanish language television station KMEX in Los Angeles; and

WHEREAS, Ruben Salazar was tragically killed on August 29, 1970 by a Los Angeles County Sheriffs Deputy during the Chicano Moratorium March; and

WHEREAS, Ruben Salazar's story of courage and activism is documented in the PBS documentary Ruben Salazar: Man in the Middle and countless scholarships and awards are given in his name; and

WHEREAS, Ruben Salazar proved that a journalist can be an advocate for empowering a community while still maintaining journalistic integrity; and

WHEREAS, Ruben Salazar was a role model who addressed issues that still resonate to this day.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that by the adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council does hereby declare April 28, 2014 as "RUBEN SALAZAR DAY"!

RAFFl CUL TURAL ASSOCIATION

WHEREAS, in 1963, the Romanian-Armenian community in southern California established RAFFI CULTURAL ASSOCIATION under the leadership of Sarkis Saruni; and

WHEREAS, RAFFI CULTURAL ASSOCIATION'S mission to playa significant role in the life of the Armenian community of California, to preserve the Armenian identity, to cooperate and maintain favorable relationships with the Armenian community, and to educate and support new generations of members to continue the traditions of the organization; and

WHEREAS, in the 1960's, RAFFl CULTURAL ASSOCIATION established the RAFFI soccer team in Los Angeles, which became the first Homenetmen sports team in the United States; and

WHEREAS, RAFFI CULTURAL ASSOCIATION actively supported the founding of both the S1. Garabed Church and the Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School in the Hollywood area by providing invaluable input on the planning and construction stages; and

WHEREAS, RAFFl CULTURAL ASSOCIATION has engaged in countless humanitarian and benevolent activities, including conducting fundraisers and telethons, sending aid to Armenian communities in Romania, and supporting Armenian Relief Society projects; and

WHEREAS, throughout its 50 years of extraordinary service, RAFFI CULTURAL ASSOCIATION has remained strongly committed to promoting and supporting cultural, educational, and sports activities, and preserving the proud heritage ofthe Armenian community.

Neutra Institute Day

WHEREAS, the Neutra Institute, founded in 1962, celebrates its 52nd year of service, at least 45 of which have been under the tutelage ofDion Neutra, Executive Consultant, and Fellow, who on October 8th, celebrates his own 88th birthday; and

WHEREAS, the Neutra architectural practice, honored for its contributions on four continents and 20 states, with a concentration in Silver Lake, on April 8, celebrated founder Richard Neutra's 122nd birthday; and

WHEREAS, Dion Neutra, this year, celebrates 82 years of residency in Silver Lake, by issuing a challenge for anyone else to match this; a prize to be awarded to any such aspirant who can document arriving before 1932; and

WHEREAS, In recognition of his long series of advocacies for improvements of this, his home base, over these many years, Dion polishes his reissue of a plan he first espoused in 1970 in honor of his father's passing a week before the first Earth Day. A plan that would properly acknowledge City Monument #640, the VDL Research House II, opposite the Meadow, the design of which, so far, has ignored this presence across the street; and

WHEREAS, The Institute has taken on this challenge along with other initiatives in a petition on its website, www.neutra.org, and invites others to sign and support a rational, integrated transition of Silver Lake as Park; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that by the adoption of this resolution, the City Council of the City of Los Angeles does hereby declare Sunday, April 27, 2014 as NEUTRA INSTITUTE DAY in the City of Los Angeles for its outstanding contributions. The City's endorsement, to commemorate Pioneers of the Ecology Movement, and recognize the World Renown VDL Research House II, a City Monument, by the repetition each year of its Run-Walk and related events to be celebrated on a Sunday in April, close to Earth Day week.

Giancarlo Esposito

WHEREAS, Giancarlo Esposito is a celebrated television, film and stage actor whose acting career spans several decades; and

WHEREAS, Esposito is currently starring as Major Tom Neville - a former mild-mannered insurance agent-turned ruthless and cunning militia leader after the world inexplicably loses all sources of power - in the NBC drama series "Revolution. "From JJ. Abrams' Bad Robot Productions and creator/executive producer , the Warner Bros. Television-produced "Revolution" airs on NBC; and

WHEREAS, Television audiences also know him well from his iconic portrayal of drug kingpin Gustavo 'Gus' Pring in AMC's award-winning series "," for which he won the 2012 Critics Choice Award and also earned a 2012 Emmy® nomination; and

WHEREAS, In 2014, Esposito plans to direct and star in the independent historical drama "Patriotic Treason," the story of abolitionist John Brown. Esposito will play Fredrick Douglass opposite four-time Academy Award® nominee Ed Harris; and

WHEREAS, Esposito has appeared in notable films such as "Rabbit Hole," "," "Smoke" and "The Last Holiday. " His performances in 's films "," "Mo' Better Blues, " "" and "Malcolm X" are among Esposito's most memorable roles. Esposito's other film credits include outstanding performances in "Sherrybaby." "Ali," "Nothing to Lose," "," "Bob Roberts," "King of New York" and "The CouonCtub." In 1995, Esposito was recognized for his incredible work in "Fresh" with a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award; and

WHEREAS, In 2007, through his production company, Quiet Hand Productions, Esposito made his feature directorial debut with the film "Gospel Hill. " He also co-starred in the film with Danny Glover, , Julia Stiles, Taylor Kitsch and Samuel L. Jackson; and

WHEREAS, This fascinating drama film won more than nine awards at various acclaimed film festivals. Quiet Hand Productions aspires to make "conscious content" films that focus on the inspirational; and

WHEREAS, Esposito's many television credits include "Community, " "Once Upon a Time," "Homicide.' Life on the Street, " "Law & Order, " "Bakersfield PD," "," and "Kidnapped;" and

WHEREAS, Esposito is also well-known to theatre goers for his award-winning work on stage. He recently starred in Atlantic Theater Company's world premiere of "Storefront Church," written and directed by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award'" winner John Patrick Shanley. "Storefront Church" joins "Doubt" and "Defiance" to complete Shanley's "Church and State" trilogy. Esposito has won two Obie Awards for "Zooman and The Sign" at the and "Distant Fires" at The Atlantic Theater Company, where he continues to perform and teach as a company member. His long list of Broadway credits includes "Sacrilege," "Seesaw," "Merrily We Roll Along," and "Lost In The Stars, " to name a few. WHEREAS, Giancarlo Esposito, on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, will be honored by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame:

Frank Fukuzawa

WHEREAS, the City of Los Angeles commends the dedication and service of World War II veteran and retired Los Angeles Unified School District teacher Frank Fukuzawa, a member of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team; and

WHEREAS, Frank was born in Santa Barbara, California. He attended elementary and secondary school there; and

WHEREAS, during World War II, he and his family were incarcerated at Tulare Assembly Center in Tulare, California, and later were moved to the Gila Relocation Center in Rivers, Arizona; and

WHEREAS, Frank served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team in France and fialy, and returned to Santa Barbara after receiving his Army Discharge; and

WHEREAS, in 1950, he graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he received his BA degree. In 1975, he received his Master's Degree in Special Education from California Lutheran University; and

WHEREAS, Frank taught in Los Angeles Unified School District for 35 years, retiring in 1985; and

WHEREAS, he has been married to his wife, Nami, for over 53 years. They have two grown children - a daughter and a son, and three grandchildren; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that by the adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council does hereby recognize and commend the patriotism and service of Frank Fukuzawa.

Technical Sergeant Mesao Takahasi

WHEREAS, the City of Los Angeles commends the dedication and service of World War II veteran Technical Sergeant Mesao Takahasi, member of 100th Infantry Battalion - C Company; and

WHEREAS, Masao was born in Modesto, California on August 9, 1924 and attended Schneider High School in Stockton, California; and

WHEREAS, he was drafted into the army in 1944 after spending one year at Menzanar War Relocation Center. He was sent to Camp Blanding, Florida and completed his basic training as a Rifleman with C Company of the 100th Infantry Battalion; and

WHEREAS, Mesao was sent overseas where he served in the Champagne campaign, the Gothic Line, and Po Valley; and

WHEREAS, his significant military decorations include the Bronze Star Medal and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. He was discharged in 1946; and

WHEREAS, Masao has been married to his wife, Elma for over 65 years. They have one son and three daughters, and currently live in Torrance, California; and

WHEREAS, he is a member of the Veterans Honor Guard and the Go For Broke National Education Center; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that by the adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council does hereby recognize and commend the patriotism and service of Technical Sergeant Mesao Takahasi.

Private First Class Osamu "Sam" Fujikawa

WHEREAS, the City of Los Angeles commends the dedication and service of World War IIveteran Private First Class Osamu "Sam" Fujikawa; and

WHEREAS, Sam was born in Alameda, Califomia on August 23,1925. He was raised in Oakland, California until he was evacuated to Tanforan Assembly Center in April 1942, and was moved to Topaz War Relocation Center in Utah in September; and

WHEREAS, in June 1944, he was drafted into the Army from Topaz High School Senior Class. After training at Camp Shelby in Mississippi, Sam was assigned to the 100'h Infantry Battalion; and

WHEREAS, Sam was shipped overseas in November 1944 as Private First Class and landed in North Africa. He fought in fierce battles in France and Italy; and

WHEREAS, Sam came home as Tech Sergeant on a Victory Ship with 500 other 100'h Infantry Battalion and 4420d Infantry Regiment soldiers. They landed in the New York Harbor in July 1946 and were part of historic parade march down Constitution Blvd. in Washington D.C. at which President Truman awarded them the 8'h Presidential Unit Citation; and

WHEREAS, after his Army discharge in 1946, Sam settled in Cleveland, Ohio. He married his wife Teri in September 1949 in New York, and in 1953 they moved to Alhambra, California; and

WHEREAS, Sam was employed as a Design Engineer at Hughes Aircraft until his retirement after 33 years; and

WHEREAS, he was a volunteer at the Japanese American National Museum in downtown Los Angeles, currently volunteers at the Go For Broke National Education Center, and for the past 20 years, has served as President of the Mainland Chapter of the 100'h Infantry Battalion Veterans Club; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that by the adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council does hereby recognize and commend the patriotism and service of Private First Class Osamu "Sam" Fujikawa.

Technical Sergeant Victor "Vic" Abe

WHEREAS, the City of Los Angeles commends the dedication and service of World War II veteran Technical Sergeant Victor "Vic" Abe; and

WHEREAS, Victor was born in Los Angeles, California on May 4, 1920 and attended Francis Polytechnic Senior High School in Sun Valley; and

WHEREAS, after the war declaration in December 1941, he and his family were incarcerated at the Santa Anita Assem bly Center and later to the Heart Mountain Relocation Center in Park County, Wyoming; and

WHEREAS, Victor was inducted into the Army at Fort Macarthur in San Pedro on February 25, 1942, and took basic training in Camp Robinson, Arkansas. Mer basic training he was shipped to Camp Savage, Minnesota for Military Intelligence training and then sent overseass; and

WHEREAS, his WWII battles include the Leyte landing and campaign in the Philippines, and the Mindanao landing and campaign. His duties consisted of MIS Translator, including diaries and battle documents; and

WHEREAS, following his military service, Victor resumed his college education in 1946 at University of California, Berkeley and graduated in 1948. He then returned to the Los Angeles area to work in structural engineering consulting; and

WHEREAS, he has been married to his wife, Esther, for 57 years. They have two grown daughters, Vicki and Verna; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that by the adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council does hereby recognize and commend the patriotism and service of Technical Sergeant Victor "Vic" Abe.

Technician Third Grade Ken Akune

WHEREAS, the City of Los Angeles commends the dedication and service of World War IIveteran Technician Third Grade Ken Akune; and

WHEREAS, Ken was born in Turlock, California on July 3,1923. He studied at Woodbury Business University; and

WHEREAS, after the war declaration in December 1941, Ken volunteered on Dec. 12, 1942 from the Amache Relocation Center in Colorado; and

WHEREAS, he and his brother, Harry Akune, were sent to Camp Savage Military Intelligence Service Language School for training. After graduation in June 1943, he was shipped to Camp Shelby for seven weeks; and

WHEREAS, Ken trained with 442nd RCT "S" Company before being sent overseas in January 1944. His major battles include China, Burma and India Theater; and

WHEREAS, he had two brothers that served in the Japanese military - Saburo served in the Tokkotai (Kamikaze) and Shiro served in the Japanese Navy; and

WHEREAS, he was discharged from the Army in 1945; and

WHEREAS, he currently serves as a member on the Go For Broke National Education Center Board of Directors; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that by the adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council does hereby recognize and commend the patriotism and service of Private First Class Makoto "James" Ogawa.

Billy Joel

WHEREAS, the City of Los Angeles commends the career and talent of pianist, singer- and composer William Martin "Billy" Joel. Since releasing his first hit song, "Piano Man," in 1973, Joel has become the sixth best-selling recording artist and the third best-selling solo artist in the United States; and

WHEREAS, Joel had :rop 40 hits in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, achieving 33 Top 40 hits in the United States, all of which he wrote himself. He is also a six-time Grammy Award winnerwho has been nominated for 23 Grammy Awards throughout his career. He has sold over 150 million records worldwide; and

WHEREAS, Joel was inducted into the Hall of Fame (1992), the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1999), and the Long Island Music Hall of Fame (2006). In 2001, Joel received the Johnny Mercer Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2013, Joel received the Kennedy Center Honors, the nation's highest honor for influencing American culture through the arts; and

WHEREAS, Joel was born in the Bronx on May 9, 1949, and began piano lessons at age 4. Joel attended Hicksville High School until 1967, but he did not graduate with his class, due to nights playing at a piano bar to help his mother make ends meet. Rather than attend summer school to earn his diploma, and after seeing The Beatles on , Joel decided to begin a career in music; and

WHEREAS, in 1971, Joel signed a contract with the record company Family Productions and released his first album, Cold Spring Harbor. The album was a technical and commercial disappointment, but Joel moved to Los Angeles and bounced back with 1973's Piano Man. His time playing at The Executive Room on Wilshire Boulevard was immortalized in his hit song "Piano Man," which describes a no-name Los Angeles lounge's down-and-out patrons. He went on to make several more successful albums in the 70s like Streetlife Serenade (1974), The Stranger (1977) and 52nd Street (1978); and

WHEREAS, through the 1980s, Joel would be crowned a hit-maker with smashes such as "," "," "Innocent Man," "" and "We Didn't Start the Fire." He would release two volumes of Greatest Hits and become the first American performer to unleash a full-scale rock production in the Soviet Union; and

WHEREAS, after the release of River of Dreams (1994), Joel slowed his studio recordings, but continued to tour alone and in combination with fellow artists such as Elton John; and

WHEREAS, in 2007, Joel released the single "All My Life," his first song with original lyrics in 13 years. Though semi-retired in terms of recording new pop songs, Joel has continued to tour and branch out as an artist; and · WHEREAS, throughout the years, Joel's songs have acted as personal and cultural touchstones for millions of people, mirroring his ownqoal of writing songs that "meant something during the time in which Ilived ...and transcended that time;" and
