RESOLUTION "Ruben Salazar Day" April 28, 2014 \ WHEREAS, Ruben Salazar began his pioneering journalism career at the EI Paso Herald-Post, focusing on issues affecting the Latino community; and WHEREAS, Ruben Salazar covered the Mexican-American community as a reporter for the Los Angeles Times and maintained a column at the Times, giving him the opportunity to address the paper's largely white readership, bridging the gap between the old ideology of assimilation and the new chicanismo; and WHEREAS, Ruben Salazar's focus on the Mexican-American community paved the way for other Mexican-American journalists; and continued to report and advocate for the Mexican- American community as the news director for the Spanish language television station KMEX in Los Angeles; and WHEREAS, Ruben Salazar was tragically killed on August 29, 1970 by a Los Angeles County Sheriffs Deputy during the Chicano Moratorium March; and WHEREAS, Ruben Salazar's story of courage and activism is documented in the PBS documentary Ruben Salazar: Man in the Middle and countless scholarships and awards are given in his name; and WHEREAS, Ruben Salazar proved that a journalist can be an advocate for empowering a community while still maintaining journalistic integrity; and WHEREAS, Ruben Salazar was a role model who addressed issues that still resonate to this day. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that by the adoption of this resolution, the Los Angeles City Council does hereby declare April 28, 2014 as "RUBEN SALAZAR DAY"! Seconded by: ---t!C'=-"=,"_"'::::"" /!;;L-=~_.__ ADOPTED APR 2 5 2014 LOSANGELESCITYCOUNCil APR 2 5 201~ RESOLUTION RAFFl CUL TURAL ASSOCIATION WHEREAS, in 1963, the Romanian-Armenian community in southern California established RAFFI CULTURAL ASSOCIATION under the leadership of Sarkis Saruni; and WHEREAS, RAFFI CULTURAL ASSOCIATION'S mission to playa significant role in the life of the Armenian community of California, to preserve the Armenian identity, to cooperate and maintain favorable relationships with the Armenian community, and to educate and support new generations of members to continue the traditions of the organization; and WHEREAS, in the 1960's, RAFFl CULTURAL ASSOCIATION established the RAFFI soccer team in Los Angeles, which became the first Homenetmen sports team in the United States; and WHEREAS, RAFFI CULTURAL ASSOCIATION actively supported the founding of both the S1. Garabed Church and the Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School in the Hollywood area by providing invaluable input on the planning and construction stages; and WHEREAS, RAFFl CULTURAL ASSOCIATION has engaged in countless humanitarian and benevolent activities, including conducting fundraisers and telethons, sending aid to Armenian communities in Romania, and supporting Armenian Relief Society projects; and WHEREAS, throughout its 50 years of extraordinary service, RAFFI CULTURAL ASSOCIATION has remained strongly committed to promoting and supporting cultural, educational, and sports activities, and preserving the proud heritage ofthe Armenian community. A plan that would properly acknowledge City Monument #640, the VDL Research House II, opposite the Meadow, the design of which, so far, has ignored this presence across the street; and WHEREAS, The Institute has taken on this challenge along with other initiatives in a petition on its website, www.neutra.org, and invites others to sign and support a rational, integrated transition of Silver Lake as Park; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that by the adoption of this resolution, the City Council of the City of Los Angeles does hereby declare Sunday, April 27, 2014 as NEUTRA INSTITUTE DAY in the City of Los Angeles for its outstanding contributions.
