Sasha Mäkilä Conducting Madetoja Discoveries About the Art and Profession of Conducting
Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre Sasha Mäkilä Conducting Madetoja Discoveries About the Art and Profession of Conducting A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Music) Supervisor: Prof. Mart Humal Tallinn 2018 ABSTRACT Conducting Madetoja. Discoveries About the Art and Profession of Conducting For the material of my doctoral project, I have chosen the three symphonies of the Finnish composer Leevi Madetoja (1887–1947), all of which I have performed in my doctoral concerts during years 2012–2017. In my doctoral thesis, I concentrate on his first symphony, Op. 29, but to fully understand the context it would be beneficial to familiarize oneself with my doctoral concerts on the accompanying DVDs, as well as with the available commercial and archival recordings of Madetoja’s three symphonies. The aim of this thesis is to understand the effect of scholarly activity (in this case working with manuscripts and recordings) on the artistic and practical aspects of a conductor’s work; this is not a study on the music of Madetoja per se, but I am using these hitherto unknown symphonies as a case study for my research inquiries. My main research inquiry could be formulated as: What kind of added value the study of composer’s manuscripts and other contemporary sources, the analysis of the existing recordings of the work by other performers, and the experience gained during repeated performances of the work, bring to performing (conducting) the work, as opposed to working straightforwardly using only the readily available published edition(s)? My methods are the analysis of musical scores, manuscripts and recordings, critical reflection on my own artistic practices, and two semi-structured interviews with conductor colleagues. -

Billy Joel's Turn and Return to Classical Music Jie Fang Goh, MM
ABSTRACT Fantasies and Delusions: Billy Joel’s Turn and Return to Classical Music Jie Fang Goh, M.M. Mentor: Jean A. Boyd, Ph.D. In 2001, the release of Fantasies and Delusions officially announced Billy Joel’s remarkable career transition from popular songwriting to classical instrumental music composition. Representing Joel’s eclectic aesthetic that transcends genre, this album features a series of ten solo piano pieces that evoke a variety of musical styles, especially those coming from the Romantic tradition. A collaborative effort with classical pianist Hyung-ki Joo, Joel has mentioned that Fantasies and Delusions is the album closest to his heart and spirit. However, compared to Joel’s popular works, it has barely received any scholarly attention. Given this gap in musicological work on the album, this thesis focuses on the album’s content, creative process, and connection with Billy Joel’s life, career, and artistic identity. Through this thesis, I argue that Fantasies and Delusions is reflective of Joel’s artistic identity as an eclectic composer, a melodist, a Romantic, and a Piano Man. Chapter 1 The Italian Condition Prior to 1919 Women are angels or demons, born to take care of the household, bear children, and to make cuckolds. Benito Mussolini In this chapter, I will examine Italy in the period before 1919 in order to understand the context into which Fascism was born. I will analyze the political, social and economic condition that existed in the Italian peninsula between the beginning of the Twentieth century and World War One, and try to explain why Fascism became so popular in so little time, and why it was able to establish such a long-term dictatorship. Italian Fascism was an antidemocratic and antisocialist movement that developed in Italy at the end of World War I, more precisely on March 23, 1919 when Benito Mussolini founded his new organization called Fasci di Combattimento in Piazza San Sepolcro in the city of Milan. -
