Telenet Hotels Network | Serbia Hotel Aleksandar Palas, Belgrade Media Center Belgrade Phone: +38164 5558581; +38161 6154768; www.booking-hotels.biz [email protected] Hotel Aleksandar Palas, Belgrade Aleksandar Palas Hotel was named after a great Serbian King Aleksandar Obrenovic. The inspiration to name it after the king was born from the very location of the hotel as it is situated between Kralja Petra I [King Peter the 1st - Karadjordjevic dynasty], and Cara Lazara [Tsar Lazar - Nemanjic dynasty] streets, thus naming the hotel after a great Serbian King of the third Serbian dynasty Obrenovic seemed only the most appropriate. Hotel is situated in a building that was built in 1887, in the style of architectural classicism. As many surrounding buildings were also built in the 19th century, it creates a beautiful and harmonious architectural complex. Nine very exclusive suites available at the Aleksandar Palas Hotel were designed to provide an exceptional degree of comfort and pleasure to our guests. There is a lack of understanding about how the process of institutional forgetting works and how some memories stay a part of oral narratives and commu- nicative social memory while they are omitted from the official memory represented by the official documents and events of remembering. Inspired by Paul Connerton’s article on the typology of forgetting we explore his typology in selected case studies of three public theaters located in Belgrade, focusing on remembering policy and practices investigating if a type of forgetting typical for a state/society/nation level is possible to be applied in the context of a cultural organization. We agree with Wessel and Moulds that developing common language and terminology would be important and beneficial for cross disciplinary dialogue. In this sense, the study shows how the typology of for- getting in societies can be applied and developed in the organizational memory studies and cultural management. The focus of the research is the dynamics of remembering and forgetting explored through analysis of the interaction between changing context, official institutional memories, and social communicative memories.

  • Sasha Mäkilä Conducting Madetoja Discoveries About the Art and Profession of Conducting
Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre Sasha Mäkilä Conducting Madetoja Discoveries About the Art and Profession of Conducting A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Music) Supervisor: Prof. Mart Humal Tallinn 2018 ABSTRACT Conducting Madetoja. Discoveries About the Art and Profession of Conducting For the material of my doctoral project, I have chosen the three symphonies of the Finnish composer Leevi Madetoja (1887–1947), all of which I have performed in my doctoral concerts during years 2012–2017. In my doctoral thesis, I concentrate on his first symphony, Op. 29, but to fully understand the context it would be beneficial to familiarize oneself with my doctoral concerts on the accompanying DVDs, as well as with the available commercial and archival recordings of Madetoja’s three symphonies. The aim of this thesis is to understand the effect of scholarly activity (in this case working with manuscripts and recordings) on the artistic and practical aspects of a conductor’s work; this is not a study on the music of Madetoja per se, but I am using these hitherto unknown symphonies as a case study for my research inquiries. My main research inquiry could be formulated as: What kind of added value the study of composer’s manuscripts and other contemporary sources, the analysis of the existing recordings of the work by other performers, and the experience gained during repeated performances of the work, bring to performing (conducting) the work, as opposed to working straightforwardly using only the readily available published edition(s)? My methods are the analysis of musical scores, manuscripts and recordings, critical reflection on my own artistic practices, and two semi-structured interviews with conductor colleagues.

  • The Capsule Alana Foster There Were No Windows in His Cell. Not One
The Capsule Alana Foster There were no windows in his cell. Not one window. He just once, wanted to look outside and see the stars and planets in the wide, open galaxy. He just wanted to see the outside world, the beautiful planets that shined in the sky. He spent all of his time waiting and waiting with nothing to look out at. No star to watch. He felt so trapped, so alone; he hadn’t seen the outside world for the longest time. He desperately wanted a glimpse of something, anything that wasn’t the walls of his cell. Three months ago, Nikolai Bukharin was taken from his home, and arrested. He was never told the reasons of his arrest, just that he had committed terrible crimes. It happened in the early spring, in the middle of the afternoon. Two men barged into his house, and arrested him. He never even had a chance to say goodbye to his wife. The last thing he remembered was feeling of someone’s hand to the back of his head. When he finally woke up in his cell, a different man stood beside him. The man was short, with a somewhat round figure, and the top of his head had about three hairs remaining. The man smiled and assured him not to worry, he told Bukharin, “You shall only be kept here for a few days.” A few days came and went, then a few weeks. Bukharin once tried to ask a guard if he knew the reason for his imprisonment. The guard blankly stared at him straight in the eyes, and without giving him an answer; he shut the door in Bukharin’s face.
