Fue fundada en 1993 y se publica con periodicidad semestral. Incluye artículos, discusiones, conferencias, noticias de publicaciones y recensiones procedentes de colaboradores pertenecientes a la comunidad de profesores y gra- duados de todas las regiones a las que llega la presencia de la Universidad. Dado que ésta alcan- za con su presencia a gran parte del mundo Iberoamericano y a buena parte de Europa se admiten colaboraciones en las diferentes lenguas de amplia difusión en Occidente (castellano, inglés, francés, portugués, alemán e italiano). El nombre de la Revista quiere indicar dos cosas. La primera, que es un espacio para las «Opiniones racionales» y, por tanto, sus páginas están abiertas a las diferentes y variadas opinio- nes filosóficas y antropológicas que pueblan el mundo, supuesto que, además, respondan al formato racional de las propuestas filosóficas. En este sentido la Revista viene a ser un largo compendio de la variedad de visiones filosóficas que conviven en amplias regiones del planeta. La segunda que todas las ideas u opiniones publicadas lo son de sus autores y, por lo mismo, ÉNDOXA sólo ejerce de altavoz. Sin embargo, en esta función, le complace abrir sus páginas a los filósofos más recientes y/o más jóvenes. Difusión: Además de a las universidades Españolas, su difusión alcanza a la mayor parte del Espacio universitario Iberoamericano y a varios Centros universitarios y de Investigación de Europa y EEUU. La revista ÉNDOXA posee un servicio regular de intercambio con otras muchas publicacio- nes universitarias españolas y extranjeras. The University Journal of Philosophy, ÉNDOXA, is edited by the Faculty of Philosophy at the National University of Distance Learning (UNED). It was founded in 1993 and it appears appro- ximately at six-monthly intervals. It includes original articles, discussions, conferences, publica- tion reports and reviews by contributors who belong to the community of teachers and gradua- tes from all regions and countries where the university has a presence. Given that this presence includes most of the Ibero-American world and a great part of Europe, we accept contributions in the most widely spoken languages of the Western world (Castilian, English, French, Portu- guese, German and Italian). The title of the journal proposes two things. First, that it is a space for «Rational Opinions» and, therefore, its pages are open to the different and varied philosophical opinions that abound in the world provided that they concord with the rational format of philosophical proposals. In this sense, the journal purpose is to be a long compendium of the varying philosophical views that exist together in wide areas of the planet. Second, all ideas or opinions belong to their authors and, therefore, ÉNDOXA aims to serve solely as a platform. As such and by way of ful- filling this role, ÉNDOXA is pleased to open its pages to the newest and/or youngest philoso- phers. Diffusion: In addition to Spanish universities, its spread reaches to most part of the Iberoamerican space University and several universities and research’s centres in Europe and USA. ÉNDOXA keeps a regular service of exchange with other Spanish and foreign academic publications. And quite a few years ago, I think I must have been in my teens, I read a work by Hegel called The Philosophy of History. And in the course of The Philosophy of History, Hegel says that history moves from east to west. I may not exactly embody history, but I think I can say that in recent years, in recent decades, I have moved from east to west. 40 years ago today I was very much in India, as you've been reminded I was receiving my bhikku ordination. And 20 years ago I was back in England, moving from east to west. Manjuvajra's reminiscences by the way start from some of my own, because I do remember that retreat 20 years ago at, I think Keffolds in Sussex actually. I remember it very well, I remember it I'm afraid, I'm sorry to say, not because I met Manjuvajra, in fact I can't remember meeting him (laughter) - honesty is the best policy - I can't remember meeting him, for me that easter retreat for which I came back specially from the States, was rather overshadowed by the fact that I was very ill, and in fact I'm told I nearly died on that occasion. I recovered and went back to the States to do whatever I was doing there, and yes that was 20 years ago.

    Ordinary Magic Page 1 of 19 Intro Surata: I used to have a very stereotyped idea of what a friend was really and I think that’s expanded now to the point where I don’t really know if I can give an answer to the question. My own experience is I get on with all sorts of people in all sorts of different kinds of ways. Max: I don’t know we are quite different but in some ways we are the same. Sam: It’s weird we are like aspects of one personality, it’s really weird. Max: Strange. Sam: If Max or I were, if either were to die, it would be so, so weird. Subhuti: You are much less likely in the modern day to see friendships that last a lifetime. Partly because circumstances against it but those circumstances are also against the development of a really serious attitude to life as containing high values which need to be worked at. Aloka paints Alaya’s portrait Surata v/o: I think the best way to get to know someone is to spend time with them. Even though Alaya, Sam’s dad, and Aloka, Max’s dad, have a Buddhist connection going back twenty years, more recent changes in circumstances mean they can spend lots more time together. The results are several paintings and a closer friendship. When I was growing up in the East End of London in the late forties the effects of the war were still around. The deep social bonds and friendships necessary for survival were an ordinary part of daily life.

Going For Refuge First of all, the Going for Refuge, which is the basis for all the Yanas, Great and Small. [One should visualize] in the pure expanse of the sky, on a rainbow-coloured cloud, a [gigantic] lotus with three tiers of petals; [and] on the calyx of the lotus Guru Padmasambhava, the embodiment of all the Buddhas, in a mass of light. His expression is smiling. Below, on the [frst tier of] lotus [petals], the other Lamas. Lower down [on the second tier], the Four Orders of Tantric Deities. Yet lower [on the third tier], the throng of dakinis and Dharmapalas. On the four sides of the lotus are four more lotuses. On the front [visualize] Sakyamuni and the other Buddhas of the [three] times and [ten] directions. To the right [of Guru Padmasambhava] the company of Bodhisattvas such as Avalokitesvara; behind, the Sacred Scriptures; and to the left the Arahants, Sariputra and the rest. In the sky, gods and goddesses are making oferings. In front [one should visualize] oneself, together with all sentient beings. 'From now onwards, until the attainment of Buddhahood, with great reverence of body, speech and mind, I go for refuge [to Guru Padmasambhava, etc.]' Thus thinking, one should say aloud, ‘Om Ah Hum. I've got six areas tonight which questions came out of. So the first area which we're dealing with is the Chairmen's Meeting and senior Order members. The first question is from Abhaya about senior Order members' personal development. Abhaya: In discussion the other evening Subhuti expressed his fear that as a result of having taken on a lot of responsibility over the years certain areas of his personal development had been neglected or left behind and he thought this may well be a more general problem in the case of senior, responsible Order members. Do you have any observations or views on this? Sangharakshita: I wonder what the senior and responsible Order members themselves as a whole feel, especially the Chairmen. One mustn't jump to conclusions. One needs to gather one's data first perhaps. So does anyone express any opinion? Do you all heartily agree with Subhuti, disagree with him or was the nature of the different areas identified? Abhaya: The general opinion was that in most cases it seemed to be in the reporting in that a lot of us did not experience this, that whatever areas of development we still need to work on were not necessarily as a result of having taken on too much responsibility.
