The University Journal of Philosophy, ÉNDOXA, is edited by the Faculty of Philosophy at the National University of Distance Learning (UNED). It was founded in 1993 and it appears appro- ximately at six-monthly intervals. It includes original articles, discussions, conferences, publica- tion reports and reviews by contributors who belong to the community of teachers and gradua- tes from all regions and countries where the university has a presence. Given that this presence includes most of the Ibero-American world and a great part of Europe, we accept contributions in the most widely spoken languages of the Western world (Castilian, English, French, Portu- guese, German and Italian). The title of the journal proposes two things. First, that it is a space for «Rational Opinions» and, therefore, its pages are open to the different and varied philosophical opinions that abound in the world provided that they concord with the rational format of philosophical proposals. In this sense, the journal purpose is to be a long compendium of the varying philosophical views that exist together in wide areas of the planet. Second, all ideas or opinions belong to their authors and, therefore, ÉNDOXA aims to serve solely as a platform. As such and by way of ful- filling this role, ÉNDOXA is pleased to open its pages to the newest and/or youngest philoso- phers. Diffusion: In addition to Spanish universities, its spread reaches to most part of the Iberoamerican space University and several universities and research’s centres in Europe and USA. ÉNDOXA keeps a regular service of exchange with other Spanish and foreign academic publications. • Hakuin on Kensho: the Four Ways of Knowing/Edited with Commentary by Albert Low.—1St Ed
ABOUT THE BOOK Kensho is the Zen experience of waking up to one’s own true nature—of understanding oneself to be not different from the Buddha-nature that pervades all existence. The Japanese Zen Master Hakuin (1689–1769) considered the experience to be essential. In his autobiography he says: “Anyone who would call himself a member of the Zen family must first achieve kensho- realization of the Buddha’s way. If a person who has not achieved kensho says he is a follower of Zen, he is an outrageous fraud. A swindler pure and simple.” Hakuin’s short text on kensho, “Four Ways of Knowing of an Awakened Person,” is a little-known Zen classic. The “four ways” he describes include the way of knowing of the Great Perfect Mirror, the way of knowing equality, the way of knowing by differentiation, and the way of the perfection of action. Rather than simply being methods for “checking” for enlightenment in oneself, these ways ultimately exemplify Zen practice. Albert Low has provided careful, line-by-line commentary for the text that illuminates its profound wisdom and makes it an inspiration for deeper spiritual practice. ALBERT LOW holds degrees in philosophy and psychology, and was for many years a management consultant, lecturing widely on organizational dynamics. He studied Zen under Roshi Philip Kapleau, author of The Three Pillars of Zen, receiving transmission as a teacher in 1986. He is currently director and guiding teacher of the Montreal Zen Centre. He is the author of several books, including Zen and Creative Management and The Iron Cow of Zen.

  • Sex, AIDS Scandal Forces Buddhist Leader Into Retreat by Don Lattin Chronicle Religion Writer
News From The Dharma Realm The Largest Daily Circulation in Northern California ★★★★★ SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1989 415-777-1111 Sex, AIDS Scandal Forces Buddhist Leader Into Retreat By Don Lattin Chronicle Religion Writer Amid allegations that he had sex with his disciples after being exposed to the AIDS virus, the leader of one of the nation's largest Buddhist sects has gone into retreat in Southern California to consider requests that he resign. Osel Tendzin, the American-born leader of an international network of Tibetan Buddhist centers, already has apologized for his "ignorance" and "clouded vision" in letters to his students and in meetings at his Vajradhatu meditation centers in Berkeley, Boulder, Colo., and elsewhere. "There are individuals in the sangha (congregation) who would like to see me remove myself from the sphere of Vajradhatu," Tendzin wrote in a recent letter to his disciples. "If I were to do such a thing it would violate the oath I took with my guru, and it would also violate "my heart." Tendzin's guru is the late Chgyam Trungpa Rinpoche, who came here from Tibet in 1970 to found one of the nation's most successful and infamous Buddhist empires, which includes "Dharmadatua" meditation centers in San Francisco, Berkeley and Palo Alto. Long before his death last year at age 47, Trungpa named Tendzin his "vajra regent" and successor to lead his free wheeling 3,000-member sect. OSEL TENDZIN News From The Dharma Realm He apologized for 'ignorance' Charles Lief, a member of theVajradhatu board of directors, would say only that board members have asked Tendzin to "withdraw from teaching and administrative responsibilities," and that Tendzin has gone "on retreat" to consider the request.

The Altruistic Dimension of Going for Refuge and Joining the Order Page 2 of 43 Edited by Vandananjyoti, Version 2:1, July 2020 Introduction to the Handbook The purpose of this handbook is to give you the opportunity to look in depth at the material that we will be studying on the Going for Refuge to the Three Jewels retreat at Tiratanaloka. In this handbook we give you material to study for each area we’ll be studying on the retreat. We will also have some talks on the retreat itself where the team will bring out their own personal reflections on the topics covered. As well as the study material in this handbook, it would be helpful if you could read Sangharakshita’s book ‘The History of My Going for Refuge’. You can buy this from Windhorse Publications. There is also some optional extra study material at the beginning of each section. Some of the optional material is in the form of talks that can be downloaded from the Free Buddhist Audio website at www.freebuddhistaudio.com. These aren’t by any means exhaustive - Free Buddhist Audio is growing and changing all the time so you may find other material equally relevant! For example, at the time of writing, Vessantara has just completed a series of talks called ‘Aspects of Going for Refuge’ (2016) at Cambridge Buddhist Centre.
