The benefits of using television shows and films in the EFL classroom have been thoroughly researched English and documented, and they have proven to be an effective learning tool. Particularly in the Japanese EFL context, using a situation comedy motivates students because they enjoy seeing, hearing, and using the language they learn. This paper shows how the popular American sitcom Modern Family can enhance EFL instruction through its up-to-date cultural themes and stereotypes and through its lively use of lan- Through guage, especially slang and idiomatic expressions. The course summary, syllabus, lessons, and testing and evaluation information are provided. Forster Japan Women’s University OR THE past 5 years, I have been teaching a North American Studies seminar class at Japan Women’s University in Tokyo. The goal of the course is to increase students’ F knowledge and awareness of American culture and increase their vocabulary, particu- larly slang and idiomatic expressions. In the past, I have chosen Hollywood movies due to their popular appeal and their ability to reflect American culture and modern spoken English. Two years ago, I decided to use American situation comedies, such as Seinfeld, because they of- fer an interesting, and funny, array of characters, social situations, and slang and idioms. -

An Analysis of Puns Translated for the Polish Voiced-Over Version of the American TV Series Modern Family

Aleksandra Slawuta Student number: 11107448 Supervisor: dhr. dr. Eric Metz Amsterdam 2017 1 Abstract This paper covers the subject of translatability of humor in audiovisual translation. Humor is always difficult to translate not only because of the possible cultural differences between the speakers of a source and target languages but also because everyone has different taste and is laughing at different jokes. This corpus-based thesis is analyzing the specific kind of jokes: puns. They are very language-specific, therefore difficult to translate. Nonetheless, there are certain strategies used to convey the humorous effect to other language. In this paper I am analyzing 80 puns found in the first and second season of the American TV series Modern Family and their Polish equivalents from the voiced-over translation. Basing on the theories coined by Hausmann, Delabastita, Newmark and Nash I am aiming to determine whether translation strategies used to translate puns manage to deliver funny rendering in the target language (Polish). The proponents and supporters of this policy, assert that it facilitates a dialog of medical traditions on equal terms, promotes respect and cultural dialog, improves quality of care, establishes good relationships with indigenous communities, and ensures better maternal and child health. Furthermore, they contend that the use of interculturalidad as a framework for health will not only foster cultural competence but also contribute to engage indigenous communities with the state and enable the government to address longstanding inequalities in access to health and education. -

Berry Graduate Faculty Representative Radhika Gajjala Ellen Gorsevski Lisa Hanasono ii ABSTRACT Lara Lengel, Advisor Through the fusion of media/cultural studies scholarship, interpersonal communication research, and triangulated method, this dissertation draws connections between our social and cultural interpretation of the American family, the discursive possibilities of humorous mediated representations, and the influence and implications of lying on familial relationships. The concept of the American family is as much a social and cultural identity as gender, class, and ethnicity; yet its construction has been typically ignored by cultural studies research. This dissertation addresses that deficiency by examining representations of the American family on Disney-owned situation comedies. These representations are analyzed through past interpersonal research and typologies on lying to determine how the motivation for lying and the relationship between the liar and the recipient of the lie impacts the portrayal of family structure and class status. This dissertation considers to what extent the idyllic and deviant portrayals of the American family marginalize and symbolically annihilate any family conceptualization that is not a nuclear, middle-class family and consider how these media depictions (re)flect and (re)present the broader cultural shifts surrounding the meaning of the American family. Finally, this research concludes by considering how the lie factors into the narrative of the episode and the overall perception of the familial characters. -

The program’s overwhelming popularity among television audiences and media critics alike gives reason for scholarly attention. This study answers the question, in what ways does the sitcom, Modern Family, communicate our culture’s dominant ideology about family.
