Just in Time Global eCommerce is working on a wish list feature for Behind the Walmart Mobile App that would launch in time for the App the holidays. The Global eCommerce team helps enhance the customer’s shopping experience.

Customers who use Walmart’s gift registries now have everything they need in the palm of their hand—and they can thank our Global eCommerce (GeC) team for the convenience. Now customers can use their smartphones or other mobile devices to quickly create and access a wedding or baby registry. Why build the feature into Walmart’s Mobile App (which has been downloaded and is used by millions of customers each month)? The GeC team’s research shows that more and more customers are using the app on their smartphones while cruising the aisles, says Michelle Kim, senior business manager of Planned Shopping, which handles wish lists and gift registries. So it made sense to tailor the technology to expectant parents and engaged couples. Bill Rainusso, principal product manager for Registries and Lists, led the spring release of the gift registry feature, along with a team of more than 50 developers, designers, and engineers, which worked for five months to create it. Since the launch, the team continues to make enhancements. In addition to creating apps, this Global eCommerce team, which is based in San Bruno, Calif., is responsible for the online shopping side of local assortment and fulfillment, plus shipping options like Site to Store and Pick Up Today. “We’re always looking at how we can improve the experience. It’s definitely an evolution,” says Michelle.

When your store is less than three miles from Lambeau Field, home of the National Football League’s Green Bay Packers, you’re going to host some rabid fans. “It’s crazy during home games,” says Scott Rothe, manager of Store 1453 in Green Bay, Wis. “And when the Packers are doing well, it amps it up a little more.” So Scott and his team, supported by the Home Office, buyers, and vendor partners, have worked with the Packers organization to nurture a fan culture. That’s helped the store create pregame sidewalk events with special Packers merchandise, autograph opportunities, and community-building events like Shop With a Jock, where local under- privileged kids go Christmas shopping with the players. Scott says that connecting with local fans can help any store succeed. “Think about what’s important to your customer,” he says. “If you understand them, it’ll help you connect to them. I know that the more that we do, the better—because customers love it.”

We Are Walmart VALUES IN ACTION Respect for the Individual: Value and recognize the contributions of every associate. Big Pride For many years, Chris Armendariz, office associate at Store 2985 in Fresno, Calif., has been a fan of (and participant in) the Fresno Pride parade. But this year, inspired by the Walmart World article “Showing Our Pride” (February 2015), Chris decided to combine his passions—Walmart and the LGBT community— and get Walmart and his fellow associates involved. “I know how proud I am to work for Walmart; I know how huge our LGBT community is here in Fresno; and I knew how monumental it would be for our community to see us,” Chris says. “I had to reach out.” Chris contacted Amelia McLear, director of Walmart Public Affairs and Government Relations for the Northern , Utah, and Nevada regions, who promptly agreed to have Walmart become a corporate sponsor of the parade. Chris then reached out to 15 stores in communities around Fresno, recruiting 112 associates to march. Joined by family and friends, the Walmart group was 150 people strong, the largest the event has seen to date. It was an emotional experience for Chris, a 23-year associate. “I was 18 when I started at Walmart and came out at 21, and now I’m marching in a gay pride parade with the man I’ve loved for more than 18 years, surrounded by my fellow associates, their families, and friends,” he says. “It was and still is an overwhelming feeling of joy.”
