ACNT FY2018 ANNUAL REPORT 7 STAND TOGETHER THROUGH TOUGH TIMES Fiscal Year 2018 Campaign Highlight Every year, we rally our Walmart, Inc. community to start the year strong with our “Stand Together Through Tough Times” campaign. This year’s campaign, which ran from February 20 to March 31, 2017, was another great success, proving what we know well: Walmart, Inc. associates take a special pride in their commitment to supporting each other. Once again, more than half of our salaried management associates participated by donating to ACNT! ACNT FY2018 ANNUAL REPORT WHY I GIVE: DONOR SPOTLIGHTS The spirit of ACNT is exemplified in the generosity of people across the Walmart, Inc. family—the people who step up to contribute to ACNT. They do it because they believe in our community and in being there to help fellow associates. Jay Baker works in Aviation and has been a Walmart, Inc. associate for three years. I distinctly remember learning about ACNT from our department in 2016. They did a great job of making the charity known and its importance. I was immediately inspired to support it.

Walmart1Percent.Org WALTON FAMILY “PHILANTHROPY”: A Distraction from the Walmart Economy Americans believe in the power of charitable giving. Eighty-eight percent of American households give to charity, contributing more than $2,000 per year on average.1 Despite their charitable inclinations, most American families, acting on their own, lack the financial resources to make a significant impact on the problems facing our society. The Walton family, majority owner of Walmart, is a notable exception. As members of the richest family in the United States, the Waltons have $140 billion at their disposal—enough wealth to make a positive mark on the world and still leave a fortune for their descendants. The Waltons certainly wish to be seen as a force for good. Their company claims to help people “live better” and the Walton Family Foundation mission statement speaks of “creating opportunity so that individuals and communities can live better in today’s world.”2 But that mission statement seems ironic, given that many of the most acute challenges facing American families in 2014 could rightfully be viewed as symptoms of our “Walmart economy,” characterized by rising inequality and economic insecurity.

26 Academy of Management Perspectives August Decency Means More than “Always Low Prices”: A Comparison of Costco to Wal-Mart’s Sam’s Club Wayne F. Cascio* Executive Overview Wal-Mart’s emphasis on “Always low prices. Always” has made it the largest retail operation in history. However, this unrelenting mission has also created a way of doing business that draws substantial criticism regarding the company’s employment practices, relationships with suppliers, and the company’s impact on local economies. This paper focuses on a company that delivers low prices to consumers, but in a fundamentally different way than its competitor, Wal-Mart. That company is warehouse-retailer Costco. In the following sections we will begin by providing some background on the company, including its history, its business model, its ethical principles, core beliefs, and values. Then we will consider some typical Wall Street analysts’ assessments of this approach, followed by a systematic comparison of the financial performance of Costco with that of Sam’s Club, a warehouse retailer that is part of Wal-Mart. o be sure, Wal-Mart wields its awesome power source of unrelenting criticism.
