NOTICE of SPECIAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING — SUNDAY, JUNE 30, 2019 This Special Meeting is being called by our Parish Planning Council and the Call Committee to be held on Sunday June 30, 2019 immediately after the 9:00am Worship Service. The purpose of this meeting will be to hold a votes for the calling of our next Pastor for St. Peter Lutheran Church and for the proposed Pastor Compensation Package. Vote will be by written ballot to be presided over by a representative of the Synod Bishop. A two-thirds majority of all eligible voting members is required for this election. Please plan to attend and hear about our new proposed pastor.

VBS Summary As I write this we have just wrapped up a wonderful, Spirit and Faith-filled VBS week! We created an Afri- can Savanna, where kids learned that “When life is unfair, scary, full of changes, sad and also good – we can trust that through it all – God is Good!” We had 44 kids attend with 44 helpers volunteering their gifts for this ministry with our youth. The music plays a strong part in getting the week’s themes across and the kids were enthusiastic to learn the songs. A favorite was, “Whole Lotta Change.” The opening lines are, “There’s a whole lotta change coming your way, cause like it or not nothing stays the same. So hold on tight and follow real close, cause God is here and He’s in control.” How true that change comes! By sharing with the kids that “God is Good!” we did not mean God turns everything into “happy, happy, joy, joy” but in every situation, God is with us, helping us deal with it. Throughout the week we watched for “God Sightings” – ways that God is working in the world and in our lives. We had the groups write their God Sightings on lion footprints to put around our "watering hole" We compared God Sightings to footprints letting you know God is there but you need to practice looking for them. The kids came up with some meaningful ones. Our service project was Birthday Boxes to be given to the Dubuque Food Pantry. Our goal was 60 boxes but through your generous donations of items we were able to put together 75 boxes! The Food Pantry will be so excited to get these to hand out to families. Thank you! Thank you for all the ways you support this VBS Ministry. We had older youth juggle their schedules to be able to help this week. Some were returning VBS veterans and we have watched their growth in confidence over the years. Some moved out of their comfort zone and took on leadership roles for the 1st time. We had adults taking a week’s vacation to assist us. All of this adds to the Holy Spirit whirling among us throughout the week.

Gathering & Sending the Body of Christ

 Thank you all for supporting Pastor Tawanda Murinda who was ordained at St. Peter on Wednesday, May 29, 2019

 You are invited to the ordination of Hayden Kvamme here at St. Peter on Friday, July 26, 2019 at 5:30pm. Hayden and his family, Kathryn and Maggie attended the 10:30am Sunday service during the school year and we baptized their daughter, Maggie, back in April.

 Notes on the 2019 Synod Assembly — The Northeastern Iowa Synod Assembly was held at Wartburg College June 14-16, 2019. Doug Horst- mann and Jean Rieniets attended as delegates from St. Peter Lutheran. Attendees included rostered cler- gy and deacons, youth, lay delegates and visitors. Average attendance for the sessions was 300. The NEIA Synod is one of 3 synods in Iowa and provides support for the Churches in NE Iowa. The As- sembly is held once a year to take care of the business of the Synod and provide educational opportuni- ties to attendees. Jean attended a forum on the Election Process of a Synod Bishop. The election will take place at 2020 Northeastern Iowa Synod Assembly and will bring a new Bishop because of the upcoming retirement of Bishop Steven Ullestad who has served for almost 30 years. A committee is in place which will oversee the selection of candidates for ballot and also the election process. A synod bishop serves a term of six years. Jean also attended the workshop on the social statement Faith, Sexism and Equity for All: A Call for Ac- tion. The final draft of the social statement will be presented and voted on at the ELCA General Assem- bly in August 2019. A task force has worked on the statement for six years. Language and word interpre- tation was a large part of the discussion. The workshop leader was Dr. Kit Kleinhaus, a member of the task force. Doug attended the workshop for clergy compensation where Synod staff and a member of the compensa- tion committee provided updates on the proposed 2020 compensation guidelines for the Synod rostered clergy. They also provided helpful insight into the details of the compensation packages. Also, Doug attended a presentation of a new, no cost program the Synod is making available to interest- ed congregations called “Cultivating Vitality”. It is a 2 year program to help congregations better define their purpose and improve engagement and participation of their members. It might be something for us to look at in the future. During the general business sessions there were the usual business items to attend to but in addition 2 resolutions were presented and approved by the delegates. First, in light of all the conversation nationally regarding State abortion legislation congregations are encouraged to have a conversation to review the ELCA Social Statement (1991). The second was to authorize our Synod leadership to participate in dis- cussion and visioning to explore whether the 3 Iowa Synods might be consolidated in some way in the future. We would like to thank St. Peter Lutheran for the opportunity to be your delegates and encourage others to consider participating in this informative event in the future. Submitted by Jean Rieniets & Doug Horstmann
