A Chorus Line, ACL, The Longest Line, One Singular Sensation-whatever you call it, ''A Chorus Line" changed the way people view musical theater forever. Michael Bennett had an idea-assemble a group of Broadway dancers in a room, get them to talk, record what they say and make it into a musical. It was revolu- tionary, a workshop that turned into an icon. It is from the creation of ''A Chorus Line" (ACL) that Michael coined the phrase "musical drama".

ACL is about Broadway dancers auditioning for a new Broadway show in a theatre in NY City for a director! choreographer (not unlike Mr. Bennett himself) who is coming off of two flops. This is it for him, it has to be perfect. In comes the drama, he needs to find out about each person on the line. This story is for anyone who has stepped onto a stage, heard the and couldn't get it out of their blood, and in the end, it is what they do for love.

ACL opened on Broadway on July 25,1975, and stayed there until it closed on April 28, 1990. It ran an unprecedented 6,137 performances and is only surpassed by "", which now holds the record for the longest-running show on Broadway. ACL won out of twelve nominations, including Best Musical, Best Director, Best Choreographer, Best Score and Best Book, beating out Bob 's "" (what an irony).

I was the owner! director of a studio just outside of Chicago when I first saw ACL in 1978. When I heard Cassie say the line, ''And what I really don't want to do is teach other people how to do what I should be doing myself", it made me realize where I should be -on the stage. I started auditioning for musicals and by 1980, I was cast in my first professional musical. ACL helped to change my life forever.

In 1982, I was cast in the International Tour of ''A Chorus Line" and had the privilege of working with Michael Bennett. He was a genius, a tyrant, a perfectionist, a master director/choreographer, knew exactly what he wanted and how to get it from his actors. I dedicate this show to all the gypsies out there and to my loving wife who lets me follow my dreams every day!! Dean Scott

Dean joins our staff for the first time as Director/Choreographer, but was the choreog- rapher for WVLO's "Damn Yankees". Last season subscribers will remember Dean for his memorable portrayal of George M. Cohan (one of his favorite roles). His other "on-stage" credits include SDG's "The Goodbye Girl", "No, No Nanette" and "State Fair"; SCP's "Oklahoma!" and "The Secret Garden". Dean also performed his other favorite roles of Mike in ''A Chorus Line" on an international tour and Mr. Mistoffelees in the LA company of "Cats". He is a doctor of chiropractic at HealthNow Medical Center in Sunnyvale. Bob Russell (Music Director). A graduate of SJSU with a Masters in Conducting and Arranging, Bob returns to WVLO's staff for his fifth production, his most recent was "George M!" and he welcomes the privilege to work with Dean Scott again, this time as Director/Choreographer. Bob's career as a musical director is attributed to his passion for the theatre and musicals. He has vocally and instrumentally directed over 225 shows in the Bay Area. Bob is teaching at PHS which boasts of an all-girl Jazz Choir which has appeared in Disneyland and will soon perform at Florida's Disney World. Incidentally, the Russellswill be moving to Georgia some- time this summer to join family. Suffice to say, Bob and his wife, Kathy, will miss the 'dear old theatre gang' in San Jose, but not half as much as we will miss them and their incredible talents. We wish them the very best in all their endeavors. Diane "Mom" Reynolds (Vocal Director)' We've lost track of the number of productions which "Mom" has served as Vocal Director, but she was at the piano keyboard for "Hello, Dolly" to start our season and her other credits are too numerous to mention. She's been involved with musical theater for more than 30 years as a vocal and/or music director as well as pianist. She's participated in over 300 different musicals with almost every community theater group in the Bay Area, most of them several times. "Mom" wears many hats at once, rehearsing one show 13 while another is in performance and simultaneously working with school choirs and vocalists. She does a great job of spoiling her grandchildren before returning them to their parents! Les Dale (Production Designer/Technical Director)' Subscribers last saw Les' set designs in "Forever Plaid", his 20th produc- tion for WVLO in a staff position. He began designing sets in 1986 and his favorite designs were for "Fiddler On The Roof" and "Man Of La Mancha". A retired native California, he loves cooking, painting, gardening and performing on stage. He has been nominated for many of his memorable roles and has several ERMA awards to show for his portrayals. His most recent ap- pearance was as Horace Vandergelder in "Hello, Dolly". Bob Wallitner (Production Stage Manager)' This is the fifth season that Bob has served as PSM, since he joined WVLO in 1999 for "Phantom". His time and talents have been utilized in some capacity in almost every show produced in this theater. This venue never ceases to amaze him with its "magic of the theater" that introduced him to all the close and caring friends he has found in the community theater world. Michael Glen Munoz (Lighting Designer)' Michael lights up his 19th production for WVLO, his most recent being "Hello, Dolly". His creative talents have also been utilized by SDG (he just did "Gypsy), SCPL , CCMT, and Woodminster Amphi- theater. He earned his BA in Fine Arts at SJSU with a minor in dance and then proved his dancing ability when he played one of the gangsters in last season's production of "Kiss Me, Kate". Bob Nelson (Sound Designer)' Bob has been designing sound for WVLO for the past 7 shows: "Hello, Dolly", "George M!", "Forever Plaid", "Kiss Me, Kate", ''Anything Goes", "Nunsense III" & "42nd Street". Other credits include productions for SDG, CSc, and PHS Christmas programs and the West Coast Premiere of ", the Musical". Bob is a General Contractor who's been teaching technical theater classes at PHS this fall. Nancy Kenyon (Costume Designer)' We welcome Nancy back for her third production of costuming-she just completed the 1890's fashions for "Hello, Dolly" and before that took on the the patriotic outfits for "George M!". Costuming demands don't phase her since she started costuming 8 years ago, initially in the area of dance and ballet, then graduated to theater. With a BS in Child Development and a Masters in Management, Nancy has helped costume the latest musical programs for PHS. She extends her gratitude to all the cast members for helping her find period and proper dance wear for this production.
