  • A YEAR in Review 2009 Welcome to Another Edition of V.Alum
FACULTY OF LAW A YEAR IN REVIEW 2009 Welcome to another edition of V.Alum. The handsome clock pictured on the cover of this publication adorns the apex of Old Government Building, where Victoria’s Law School is situated. It reminds us all “Tempus Fugit” and as another year finishes there could be nothing more apposite. What a year it has been. We held a celebration for Richard Boast’s success at the Montana Book Awards which was attended by a wonderful cross-section of people from the University and the city. The History Department, Crown Law, the Waitangi Tribunal, the Stout Research Centre – were but a few of the institutions represented. I said then that Richard’s work was further proof of the contribution that this Faculty makes not only to the law firms of the nation but also to the analysis of the fabric of history and the evolution of nation-building itself. The following pages resonate with such activities, which engage with the past, the present and the future: research on the criminal procedures surrounding trials of sexual offences case is side-by-side with an account of a conference which celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. From the Dean From There is much to read. I hope you enjoy it and feel as proud of it as I do. Professor ATH Smith Dean, VUW Law Faculty © Victoria University of Wellington December 2009 AT VICtoRIA’S Law SCHOOL you are surrounded by lions. • CA Students Urge Assembly Members to Pass AB
May 26, 2021 The Honorable Members of the California State Assembly State Capitol Sacramento, CA 95814 RE: Thousands of CA Public School Students Strongly Urge Support for AB 101 Dear Members of the Assembly, We are a coalition of California high school and college students known as Teach Our History California. Made up of the youth organizations Diversify Our Narrative and GENup, we represent 10,000 youth leaders from across the State fighting for change. Our mission is to ensure that students across California high schools have meaningful opportunities to engage with the vast, diverse, and rich histories of people of color; and thus, we are in deep support of AB101 which will require high schools to provide ethnic studies starting in academic year 2025-26 and students to take at least one semester of an A-G approved ethnic studies course to graduate starting in 2029-30. Our original petition made in support of AB331, linked here, was signed by over 26,000 CA students and adult allies in support of passing Ethnic Studies. Please see appended to this letter our letter in support of AB331, which lists the names of all our original petition supporters. We know AB101 has the capacity to have an immense positive impact on student education, but also on student lives as a whole. For many students, our communities continue to be systematically excluded from narratives presented to us in our classrooms. By passing AB101, we can change the precedent of exclusion and allow millions of students to learn the histories of their peoples.

By L. Frank Baum With Music and Lyrics of the MGM motion picture score By Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg Background Music by Herbert Stothart Dance and Vocal Arrangements by Peter Howard Adapted by John Kane from the motion picture screenplay By arrangement with MusicScope and Stage Musicals Limited of New York Chairperson’s Message Welcome to the Mercury Theatre and thank you for supporting CO2’s production of The Wizard of Oz. Societies like ourselves are finding it more and more difficult to find a show to perform that is not only suitable but has a fairly large cast. We become very frustrated when we hit upon a show only to find that the performance rights are not available. Last year’s production, Little Shop of Horrors was written for a cast of 10 but our production team managed to make it work with a cast of 40. I must congratulate them as we were awarded the NODA Best Musical in Area 11 in addition to Will Mugford who played Seymour being voted Best Young Actor in Area 11, so congratulations to all involved CO2 has performed The Wiz, a more upbeat production, but we thought this year we would produce what has become the classic MGM story as produced on stage by the Royal Shakespeare Company. So, no pressure on our production team who have enjoyed working with our cast of very talented youngsters, and I would like to thank them for all their hard work. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have helped with this production of The Wizard of Oz, plus the CO2 Committee for all their support, and you our audience who we continually rely upon to make this possible.
