Ottawa Food Action Plan Is a Community Response to Local Food Issues and Concerns Otawa Food Acton Plan The Otawa Food Acton Plan is a community response to local food issues and concerns. Food for All has provided the structure, supports and resources, linkages to academic researchers, community partners and organizatons, and a forum to explore food issues together, but these proposals have been writen, researched, and edited largely by community members. The Acton Plan Proposals are community solutons, and the document is a living document. 2012 BACK TO TOP Ottawa Food Action Plan is a community response to local food issues and concerns. Food for All is a community process that involves everybody – residents, government, students, researchers, and organizations. The research, writing and editing work that went into this Food Action Plan has been a collaborative effort: the Food Action Plan proposals have been researched and written by policy writing teams made up of Ottawa community members. It was then reviewed, edited and further researched by a team of volunteer editors from the community, as well as the Food for All Steering Committee and Food for All project partners. Food for All has provided the structure, supports and resources, linkages between academic researchers, community partners and organizations, and a forum to explore food issues together. The Action Plan Proposals are community solutions based on research and evidence, and the document is a living document. This work was guided by the Food for All Steering Committee. Food for All has provided the structure, supports and resources, linkages between academic researchers, community partners and organizations, and a forum to explore food issues together. These proposals have been written, researched, and edited largely by community members. What is Food For All? Food for All is a collaborative, community-based food research and action project in Ottawa. Through capacity building, community-based research and action planning, Food for All is working towards community food security and a sustainable food system in Ottawa. The core goals of this project are to: 1) Develop an OTTAWA FOOD ACTION PLAN; 2) Create and test a COMMUNITY FOOD ASSESSMENT to understand food issues on a neighbourhood level; 3) Build CAPACITY as a community to take action on food issues; 4) Record and SHARE experiences with others. The Food Action Plan proposals document food needs in our community, examine ways of strengthening the activities that already exist, and propose actions that we can take as a community to make our food system more just and sustainable. Who is involved? Food For All is a community-based project led by Just Food and the University of Ottawa, made possible through three years of funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The process has been overseen by a Steering Committee comprised of representatives from community organizations, academic institutions, and others. The public has participated in multiple workshops, consultations, and policy-writing teams. Over 300 community members have participated in workshops, research, policy-writing teams, and volunteering for the Food for All project. This number continues to grow and is a reflection of the enormous energy within the community to participate in food action and food policy initiatives. What are the needs? Food is a multidimensional issue that touches on issues including zoning and by-laws, economic development, community programming and services, city and rural planning, poverty reduction, and social, cultural, economic and environmental sustainability. While food production was once considered an exclusively ‘rural’ issue and consumption considered a mostly ‘urban’ issue, those lines are being blurred with the rapid loss of farmland, increased rural-to-urban migration rates, and a loss of viable urban agricultural systems. Building a food secure community requires the participation of many organizations and individuals with involvements and interests in food, such as non-profit community groups, environmental organizations, small and medium-sized

P A G E ii FORWARD THINKING | SURP 824 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Pinecrest Foster Farm community, located in the City of Ottawa’s west end, is anticipating the arrival of the Pinecrest light rail transit (LRT) station in 2023. Ottawa Community Housing (OCH), as a major affordable housing provider in the City, and as a major property owner in the area, has a key interest in ensuring that affordable housing is provided near the LRT station. OCH, with support from the City of Ottawa, has retained the Project Team to create a concept plan of what Ottawa’s Pinecrest Foster Farm community might look like if it were redeveloped according to transit-oriented development (TOD) principles. The Concept Plan is looking to a final build-out in 2035. The vision for Pinecrest Foster Farm is to create an inclusive, mixed-use, and transit-oriented community that is a safe and liveable environment for residents and visitors. The geographic scope for this project is differentiated by the Study Area, the site, and OCH-owned property (Figure 1). The Study Area defines a broad area of interest surrounding the future Pinecrest LRT Station, with a focus on lands north of the Highway 417 and west of Pinecrest Road. The site, which is comprised of key lands to be considered for redevelopment, is the focus of the Concept Plan. The site itself is comprised of nineteen hectares of land, which include OCH, municipal, and provincial properties, as well as a few key non-residential private properties.

    October 8, 2014 QTN Vision and Actions Background In early 2013, Ottawa’s Queensway Terrace North Community Association (QTNCA) agreed to begin a “visioning process”. Its main goals were to identify and agree on the following: 1. Vision statement 2. Main issues that QTNCA should be involved with (i.e. scope) 3. Cross-cutting principles used by QTNCA to manage the above issues 4. QTNCA positions/actions for each of the main issues With the above, the QTNCA believes that it will have a more holistic and comprehensive picture of what it does, what it stands for, and why. This will assist and help guide QTNCA activities in the future. Examples include: Deciding on whether or not to get involved with an issue or debate. Already knowing the QTNCA position on an issue when that issue becomes significant or controversial. Supporting the communications between QTNCA, QTN residents, and external parties (e.g. governmental bodies and other associations). Informing whether QTNCA should apply for a grant, project or funding, or raise funds through other means. A note on process: QTNCA discussions were held from 2013 to 2014. Preliminary results were presented and discussed at the 2013 Annual General Meeting (AGM). The final results will be presented and discussed at the QTN community AGM in November 2014. 1) Vision Statement QTN aims to preserve and enhance its core values and neighborhood character while welcoming diversity. We are open to change, progress and alternatives which benefit our neighborhood’s tangible and intangible assets.     Friends of the Central Experimental Farm Spring 2011 Newsletter Volume 23 No. 2 Magnolias – Spring’s First Star Attraction (AAFC) collection is relatively small, with fewer than 100 specimens, the majority of which are less than 15 years old. (See Page 6 for the location of magnolias around the Farm.) A hidden treasure Nestled in the north end of the Arboretum, just out of sight from Prince of Wales Drive, rests a grove of a dozen or so mature magnolias and several young, newer cultivars. A hidden treasure, this unique collection is a concise representation of the various magnolia species that can tolerate Ottawa’s harsh northern winters. Not all of the magnolia species and cultivars in this collection, however, are hardy enough to survive just anywhere in Ottawa. Several factors such as topography and genetic selection figure prominently in the existence of these wonderful specimens.
