Singing Party in The Ring Garden in Inwood, Sat., July 12th; 2pm At Dyckman Street and Broadway in the Inwood section of Manhattan. Bring instru- ments, voices and light snacks to share. Cups, plates, utensils, a small cooler with ice and a canopy for shade will be provided. There are many places within the garden to sing /jam so all can have fun doing what they like most. Admission is free. Subway: "A" train to Dyckman – 200th Street: Garden is due West across B'way with the Butterfly sign on the wrought iron fence. "#1" train to Dyckman – 200th Street, walk 4 blocks West to Broadway. Car: Henry Hudson Pkway to Dyckman St exit, then head East 3 blocks to Seaman Ave. Garden is on the corner with the iron fence around it. (Parking is on street and a little difficult to find, but easier than many parts of the city.) Bring a lunch bag or there are convenient stores nearby to purchase food and drinks. Clean water fountain on premises. Bring folding chairs and blanket. There is a small lawn area to stretch out on. About half the area is sunny, half moderate shade. Signs will be posted at the garden. John McCutcheon: Friday, July 18th; 8pm Legends – a series showcasing some of the great performers in various folk fields. With John's deep roots in American traditional music, his approach to writing reflects both a simplicity and a layered complexity that creates songs that are always more than they seem. “He is a master at the difficult craft of the ballad,” touted the Boston Globe. “Storytelling with the richness of fine literature,” added the Washington Post. “One of our country’s best ,” said . His songwriting has been hailed by critics and singers around the globe. His thirty recordings have garnered every imagin- able honor including seven Grammy nominations. He has produced over twenty albums of other artists - from traditional fiddlers, to contemporary singer-songwriters, to educational and documentary works. His books and instructional materials have introduced bud- ding players to the joys of their own musicality. And his commit- ment to grassroots political organizations has put him on the front lines of many of the issues important to communities and workers. The William Main Doerflinger Memorial Sea Shanty Sessions at the Noble Maritime Collection (to give the official title) are from 2 to 5 pm at the Noble Gallery, Building D, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, 1000 Richmond Terrace, Staten Island, NY. Refreshments are available, including beer and wine for sale. Snug Harbor is accessible by the S40 bus from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal and by car. Rockland Folk Festival; Sunday, August 24th; Rockland County; noon-6pm On Sunday, August 24th we will again be co-sponsoring the annual Borderline Picnic (now called the Rockland Folk Festival) which this year will be a tribute to Pete Seeger at a new venue, Germonds Park, 165 Germonds Road in Bardonia, NY 10954. The main stage performers are: James Durst with Madhumita Chakrabartti, Mara Levine, Loretta Hagen with Gary Hagen, Josh Joffen, Anne Price, Dan Einbender, Pat Lamanna, Marybeth D'Amico, Jeff Scroggins, Larry Kolker, Chris Brown, Michael Scolnick, Jim Colbert, Maggie Seligman, & Stout (Bob Conroy, Frank Woerner, & Frank Hendricks). In addition, Roger Sprung will be running a non-stop bluegrass jam at the jam stage. There will be a workshop about Pete as part of the program. Co sponsoring this year's festival are the Town of Clarkstown, Folk Music Society of NY (aka Pinewoods), AcousticMusicScene.com, and Folk Music Society of Huntington. Weekend Scholarships Available Applications are now being accepted to the Fall weekend for the George Parker Scholar- ship and the Mayer Scholarship. These funds provide either full or partial scholarships to individuals who could not otherwise attend and who have a strong interest in folk music, singing, and/or instrumental playing. In an effort to make our weekends available to more members there are now several scholarship funds set up : George Parker Scholarship - provides one full scholarship per fall or spring weekend to a club member otherwise unable to attend. The fund was established in memoriam by George’s parents, the New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club, and other contributors. George was a young man and a friend of folk music who greatly enjoyed our weekends. Charles & Ilse Mayer Scholarship Fund - provides one full scholarship for each of the fall, winter, and spring weekends each year. This fund was set up in memoriam by board member Evy and Ilse Mayer in honor of Evy’s father Charles Mayer. You may make a fully tax-deductible contribution in any amount to any of the funds above by sending a check payable to “Folk Music Society of New York” (noted with the name of the scholarship memorial) to our treasurer, Heather Wood, 444 W. 54th St, #7, NYC, NY 10019 To establish a new named fund in honor of or in memoriam to a loved one, please contact any of our current board members (see list on page 21).

Eileen Pentel Summer is finally here. We have plenty of music to help us enjoy the good weather. John McCutcheon will be performing for us in July. Along with the Irish Traditional Music Sessions on Mondays, we will also be co-sponsoring the Sunnyside Sing in Queens which will meet every Wednesday. One Wednesday a month there will be a featured singer—in July, it will be Heather Wood and in August, it will be Joy Bennett & Chris Koldewey. The Folk Open Sing in Brooklyn, and the Shanty Sing continue to meet as well. Join us at the Ring Garden Sing in Inwood as well. Don’t forget to join us at the Rockland Folk Festival in August.
