As 'MacArthur Park' turns 45, Jimmy Webb will play it in that park - Los Angeles Times 10/16/13 12:35 PM ! Back to Original Article As 'MacArthur Park' turns 45, Jimmy Webb will play it in that park Jimmy Webb wrote the odd 1960s hit 'MacArthur Park,' recorded by Richard Harris. He has a sense of humor about it. And yes, he saw a cake left out in the rain. June 14, 2013 | By Randy Lewis, Los Angeles Times Before becoming a widely lauded songwriter, Jimmy Webb was just another aspiring musician living in a dingy Los Angeles apartment. The Oklahoma transplant would wander from his low-rent flat in Silver Lake to a place that would inspire one of his most indelible hits, MacArthur Park. There, between Wilshire and 7th, he'd wait for his girlfriend to get off work from her job nearby. "I used to eat lunch in the park," said Webb, 66. "It was a place you could be away from the dreariness of a really bottom-scale apartment." The scenes he saw there day after day inspired him to write "MacArthur Park," the unlikely 1968 hit single sung by actor Richard Harris. TIMELINE: Must-see summer music Now, 45 years after the location he immortalized became an unlikely pop-culture touchstone, Webb will sing "MacArthur Park" in MacArthur Park on Saturday to kick off a summer concert series. It's a first for Webb, who's never performed the song at its namesake location. "MacArthur Park was — perhaps I'm painting it with the brush of nostalgia — a kind and gentle place," Webb said.

Directed by Morgan Neville Produced by Gil Friesen Produced by Caitrin Rogers WORLD PREMIERE U.S. DOCUMENTARY COMPETITION SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL 2013 Running Time: 90 minutes | Language: English SYNOPSIS Millions know their voices, but no one knows their names. In his compelling new film TWENTY FEET FROM STARDOM, award-winning director Morgan Neville shines a spotlight on the untold true story of the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century. Triumphant and heartbreaking in equal measure, the film is both a tribute to the unsung voices who brought shape and style to popular music and a reflection on the conflicts, sacrifices and rewards of a career spent harmonizing with others. These gifted artists span a range of styles, genres and eras of popular music, but each has a uniquely fascinating and personal story to share of life spent in the shadows of superstardom. Along with rare archival footage and a peerless soundtrack, TWENTY FEET FROM STARDOM boasts intimate interviews with Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger and Sting to name just a few. However, these world-famous figures take a backseat to the diverse array of backup singers whose lives and stories take center stage in the film. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT About two years ago, I sat down with Gil Friesen, a longtime music industry veteran from A&M Records, whom I only knew by reputation. He told me he wanted to make a film about backup singers. He didn’t know what the film was going to be, but he knew there was something intriguing in there.

He has also been the scriptwriter / researcher for a series of BBC Radio 2 documentaries on U2, Thin Lizzy and Elvis Costello. Stuart is now CEO of Oh Yeah, a dedicated music centre in Belfast. Popular Music In September 1968 Van Morrison was in NewYork, recording a series of songs about life back in Belfast. This was his Astral Weeks album, one of his most important works. It was also a vivid snapshot of Northern Ireland just before the climate changed dramatically with the outbreak of the Troubles. In Morrison’s sentimental picture, there were youthful voices, parties and high-spirits; flamboyant figures such as Madame George cruised the streets of Belfast as the post-war generation challenged social conventions. The hippy ideals were already receding in America, but Belfast had experienced a belated Summer of Love and a blossoming social life.
