    2011-03-17 17:32 CET Nytt album med Rival Schools - Pedals släpps 30/3 Två magiska ord som utlöser yviga gester och fåniga leenden: Walter Schreifels. Rival Schools är för post-hardcore under 2000-talet vad Quicksand var för samma genre femton år tidigare. Och inget underligt med det då det är samma man bakom båda projekten. Just det, Walter Schreifels. Hans digra musikkarriär i akter som legendariska hardcorebanden Youth of Today och Gorilla Biscuits och melodiska CIV mynnade ut i hyllade Rival Schools. Bandet bildades i slutet av nittiotalet och släppte sin första, och enda officiella, fullängdare i början av tjugohundratalet. Det faktum att de senare var splittrade under ett antal år samt vägrade släppa sitt andra – men inspelade – studioalbum har gjort dem till en besatthet bland fansen. När skivan senare läckte på fildelarsajter världen över blev bandet lika mytomspunnet som Loch Ness-odjuret. Rival Schools har förutom Schreifels en inte helt okänd lineup i Sam Siegler från CIV, Cache Tolman från Iceburn och Ian Love. Sedan 2008 har Rival Schools återförenats och spelat live igen. De gästade Sverige med ett bejublat framträdande på Stockholmsfestivalen Where the Action is. Och nu är det dags igen. Ett nytt album ska nämligen släppas 28/3 och Schreifels och co. är på intåg igen! Pedals har gått ut i PlayMPE. För fysiska ex kontakta David Hellberg. I also be- lieve hardcore has a lot to do with the people I met in the last 22 years who were apart of the scene - they weren’t everyday people. Besides hardcore being music, it was a place to get away from the normal world! Charles Maggio (Rorschach, Gern Blandsten Records) on hardcore: John Brannon said it best: hardcore is the “blues of the suburbs.” QUICKsaND Walter Schreifels (Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits) on fighting/ disagreements in hardcore: In the scene there were homeless people all around us and a lot of fighting going on. There was the whole punks versus skins thing. There was that back drop, so it was a pretty obvious place to say something about it, and it’s cool to have a scene that allows for that discussion. That’s what gives it power in a way. The hardcore scene is like high school. There’s the typical bullshit that goes on everywhere, but it’s cooler because it’s like a musical high school and there’s something kind of romantic about that. There was also a lot of back and forth between hip- hop and hardcore at the time, too. There was a time when there was a lot of racism but there was a whole backlash against that.

Otto Sompank I always loved the simplicity and visceral feel of all forms of punk. From the Pistols take on the New York Dolls rock, or the UK Subs aggressive punk take on rhythm and blues. The stark reality Crass and the anarchist-punk scene was informed with aspects of obscure seventies rock too, for example Pete Wright’s prog bass lines in places. Granted. Perhaps the most famous and intense link to rock and punk was Motorhead. While their early output and LP’s definitely had a clear nod to punk (Lemmy playing for the Damned), they appealed to most punks back then with their sheer aggression and intensity. It’s clear Motorhead and Black Sabbath influenced a lot of street-punk and the ferocious tones of Discharge and their Scandinavian counterparts such as Riistetyt, Kaaos and Anti Cimex. The early links were there but the influence of late 1970s early 80s NWOBM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) and street punk, Discharge etc. in turn influenced Metallica, Anthrax and Exodus in the early eighties. Most of them can occasionally be seen sporting Discharge, Broken Bones and GBH shirts on their early record-sleeve pictures. Not only that, Newcastle band Venom were equally influential in the mix of new genre forms germinating in the early 1980s. One of the early examples of the incorporation of rock and metal into the UK punk scene came from Discharge.

I wanted to talk to you about some of the ethical and political considerations of punk rock music. I got into this scene thing in around 1983. I was 12 and a half at the time. By that time Maximum Rock and Roll generally, and Tim Yohannon specifically had a kind of stranglehold on what could and what could not be considered punk. The basic thinking as far as I could tell at the time was that because the rock stars of the 70s and 80s were so decadent and arrogant and pompous that we shouldn't be anything like them. As time went on the ideology developed into the ramifications of the record industry being tied into the defense industry and other bad things. Eventually the mere possibility of breaking even on a band or doing a record with any non-MRR approved record labels was almost completely taboo, selling out and treason against the scene. In the early Nineties it became very clear that mainstream media was going to start signing punk rock bands and present it like it's the new thing.
