Business Bridge Issue No.30 Jun 2014 1 Mr. David Lee named Honoree of HKBU Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma Society he School of Business held the 4th Induction Ceremony of the HKBU Chapter of the Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) Prof. Albert Chan (right), President and Vice-Chancellor, HKBU and Prof. Allan TSociety on April 25, welcoming more than 30 students as new members of the Chapter. On the same occasion, Chan (left) congratulate Mr. David Mr. David Lee, Director of Lee Kum Kee Company Limited, was inducted as Chapter Honoree in recognition of his Lee on being conferred the Chapter outstanding contribution to the commercial sector and society at large. Honoree title Since 2010, the School of business has received accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) and the Association of MBAs (AMBA), becoming amongst less than 1% of the world’s business schools to have been triple accredited. The BGS Society is a world-renowned society accredited by the AACSB, and it invites outstanding business schools to establish collegiate chapters. Through the BGS network, members are able to enhance their professional skills and knowledge by interacting with other members from around the world. The HKBU Chapter has also built a close tie with the local commercial sector, enabling its members to expand their social connections.” Besides inviting students and faculty to be members, the HKBU Chapter also confers the Chapter Honoree titles on distinguished individuals who have had significant contributions to the commercial sector and society as a whole. This year, the Chapter Honoree title was conferred on Mr. David Lee. In his speech entitled “Autopilot Leadership”, Mr. David Lee shared with the audience his keys to success and management philosophy. “‘Autopilot Leadership’ is a management style developed by Lee Kum Kee, and it encompasses six major elements that form the basis of constant development of a company. These six elements include ‘choose the right talent’, ‘high trust environment’, ‘highly effective team’, ‘common goal’, ‘effective empowerment’, and ‘coaching and developing talent’.” With a focus on research and academic development, the BGS Society aims to recognise students and faculty for their excellent performance, and encourages its members to uphold the core values of “Beta”, “Gamma” and “Sigma”, which represent “honour”, “wisdom”, and “earnestness” respectively. It now has more than 700,000 members in more than 160 countries and territories. It has also established 27 collegiate chapters in Hong Kong and other regions, further enhancing the communication among its members. “The School of Business places a strong emphasis on Whole-person Education with a student-centred approach. We are committed to our students’ education, professional and personal development. The School encourages and supports students to take part in a variety of extra-curricular activities, such as leadership training, overseas exchange and business internship. The expanding BGS network fits right in to our education agenda, exposing our students to experience that helps them grow professionally and personally,” said Prof. Allan Chan, Acting Dean of the School. Business Bridge Issue No.30 Jun 2014 Feature 3 A Profile of Mr. David Lee Director, Lee Kum Kee Company Limited Director, Lee Kum Kee Health Products Group Limited Chairman, Lee Kum Kee Family Foundation Chairman, Lee Kum Kee Family Office Mr. David Lee is the fourth generation of Mr. Lee Kum Sheung, founder of the Lee Kum Kee sauce business. Mr. Lee was born in Hong Kong, educated in the USA, and is married with two sons. After graduating from the University of Southern California, Marsh School of Business, in 1982, with a degree in business administration, majoring in marketing, Mr. Lee joined Lee Kum Kee Company Limited to develop the family business. Mr. Lee started up the USA operation in 1982, and he served in various senior management positions of the Sauce Group over the past thirty years, including as Managing Director overseeing the Worldwide Food Division, Executive Director overseeing the Group Human Resources, Group Finance, Group Corporate Affairs and Group Business Development, Chairman and CEO of Lee Kum Kee (USA) Inc., and Lee Kum Kee (Europe), and he took up the chairmanship of the Lee Kum Kee Sauce Group between 2009 and 2011. Lee Kum Kee is now a leader of authentic Chinese sauces and one of Hong Kong’s few international brands that market more than 220 kinds of sauces to over 100 countries and regions around the world. Established in 1888, Lee Kum Kee was the inventor of oyster sauce and has since grown from a small family firm to a multinational corporation with a Sauce Group and a Health Product Group that it is today. Mr. Lee has been serving in the Family Council since 2002, and he served as Chairman of Lee Kum Kee Family Foundation and the Family Learning and Development Centre between 2006 and 2008. Mr. Lee also served as a member of the Hubei Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Committee from 2003 to 2012. At present, Mr. Lee serves in the Advisory Committee of the School of Business of HKBU and as an Executive Committee Member of the University of Southern California Alumni Association (HK) Limited. Business Bridge Issue No.30 Jun 2014 4 School News Dr. Candy Ho receives President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Teaching Dr. Candy Ho, Assistant Professor in the Department of Marketing, was recently bestowed the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Teaching 2014. Since joining HKBU in 2009, Dr. Ho has taught a wide range of courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Her devotion to bringing the students the best learning experience possible is evident in the “excellent” teaching evaluations she consistently receives from her students. She places students’ well- being as a priority, and is therefore committed to helping them grow by developing self-confidence, self-competency, and a good sense of social responsibility. Dr. Ho’s work goes beyond the classroom and office to reach the community. In 2011, she developed and launched a course named “Marketing Internship” to provide students with the opportunity to work in business and not-for-profit organisations. The course also equips students with practical work experience Dr. Candy Ho (first from right) at the award ceremony on March 5 that helps them connect their theoretical knowledge to the workplace. “Throughout the course students are able to develop expertise in a focused area and a breadth of problem-solving and communications skills that are transferable and sought-after in the job market. A lot of colleagues in the Department of Marketing and the School of Business have been providing tremendous support to the course. I would like to thank all of them for their support and contributions. To me, the honour is a recognition of our School’s initiatives in striving for teaching excellence,” said Dr. Ho. New and refurbished facilities unveiled After months of renovation, the School of Business is now equipped with an array of new and refurbished facilities that provide an even more pleasant education experience for both students and faculty.

    CVs of Honorary Fellowship recipients Mrs Chan-Chen Shu-an Mrs Chan-Chen Shu-an was one of the pioneers in advocating quality early childhood education in Hong Kong. She played a key role in advocating the activity approach in the local early childhood education context. One of the founders and lecturer of the Hong Kong Kindergarten Teacher Training Course organised by the School of Continuing and Professional Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in the 1980s, she has over the past 30 years laid a solid foundation for early childhood education teacher training and curriculum through her tireless contributions. Dr Darwin Chen Dr Darwin Chen is an alumnus of the Northcote College of Education. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree with First Class Honours from the University of London in 1960. His 32-year career in the Hong Kong civil service included several leading positions in government departments. Since he retired, Dr Chen has continued to serve Hong Kong and the region through various public bodies. In recognition of his service to Hong Kong, he was made a Companion of the Imperial Service Order in 1990 and awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star in 2003. Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim A devoted and experience specialist in the field of human resource management, Mr Ng Hak-kim, Eddie has over 27 years of professional human resources management experience in multinational corporations.   • The Pros and Cons of Learning Assessments
    The pros and cons of learning assessments Debate Learning assessments are considered essential for measuring and improving the quality of an education system; yet for some they also raise serious concerns. The controversy over Hong Kong SAR’s Territory Wide System Assessment illustrates the issues at stake. It has become widely accepted that students’ learning must be assessed in order for education systems to evaluate and improve on their own quality over time. Around the world, the majority of countries apply one or more forms of assessments and examinations at different educational stages (see the UNESCO Institute of Statistics catalogue of assessments). Regional and international assessment programmes and tools have proliferated, and data on international indicators is already being collected to measure progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals on indicators such as proficiency in reading, mathematics, and basic ICT skills. Yet there has also been marked resistance from some education stakeholders to the rising use of learning assessments. Opponents argue that over-reliance on learning assessments leads to a narrowing of the educational experience, places undue pressure on students and weakens their intrinsic love for learning, and—despite advancements in measurement—can ultimately provide only a very limited picture of many important aspects of a quality education. It has often been argued that low-stakes assessments can overcome many of these concerns by simply offering a snapshot of quality among a sample of students, without tying reward or punishment directly to the results. However, in many contexts even low-stakes assessments have been the subject of intense public debate. One case in point is the controversy over the Territory-wide System Assessment (TSA) in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China.

    Citation for Mrs Chan-Chen Shu-an, Honorary Fellow Mr Chairman of the Council, Mrs Chan-Chen Shu-an is a veteran early childhood educator in Hong Kong, widely respected among fellow early childhood educators and parents. A native of Meixian in Guangdong, she was born in 1926. She graduated from Yenching University, China in 1950 with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She obtained a Master’s degree in Education from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1975, as well as diplomas and licenses for pre-school education from the state of California and New York in the USA. She has been a teaching assistant in the Education Faculty of Lingnan University in Guangzhou, and a teacher in kindergartens, primary schools and nurseries in both Hong Kong and the USA. She is currently a council member of the Early Childhood Education Committee of the China Senior Professors Association, an advisor to the Hong Kong Kindergarten Teachers’ Association, a committee member of the Hong Kong Senior Education Workers Association, and a member of the Board of Directors of Dominic Savio Education. Fondly referred to as “Mrs Chan”, she is optimistic, noble, kind, elegant, gentle, humble and ever so supportive of the new generation. She is skilled at establishing links among practitioners, determined in driving curriculum reform and vocal in advocacy. She is a role model, admired and held in high regard by fellow early childhood educators. Mrs Chan is deeply influenced by the thinking of Chinese early childhood educator Chen He-qin, and believes in all being done for the children’s good and living education.

Membership This year we have a total of 347 member schools registered, covering almost all the subsidized secondary schools in Hong Kong. 2. Annual General Meeting (2011/12) The AGM (2011/12) was held on 22 November 2011 with an attendance of 144 member school principals. After the AGM, we were honoured to have Professor CHEN Yu Kun ( 中華人民共和 國教育部中學校長培訓中心主任陳玉琨教授) and Professor CHAN M.M. Johannes, SC (Hon), Dean of the Faculty of Law, The University of Hong Kong, to share with us their views on leadership issues. 3. 40 th Anniversary Celebration Our 40 th Anniversary Celebration Dinner was held at the Grand Ballroom of the Royal Plaza Hotel on 22 November 2011 at 7:00 p.m. There were 360 guests, principals and teachers participated in the joyful and memorable evening with Mr. Michael SUEN Ming-yeung, Secretary for Education, Education Bureau and Professor PAN Yong-hua, Director General of Education, Science and Technology Department, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong SAR, as our honourable guests. 4. While the blueprint did not offer much in the way of new details, it was nonetheless welcomed as a signal of the government’s continued commitment to drive economic growth in the area. And despite the lengthy wait for the blueprint, investor and developer interest in the region has steadily grown in the past two years since the initial announcement. Unsurprisingly, much of the interest has focused on Shenzhen and Guangzhou, the two Tier-1 cities in the GBA that fall under the plan, given their relatively mature economies and close proximity to Hong Kong. In this report, we take a high-level look at 1) growing property investment interest in Shenzhen and Guangzhou; 2) what supports the office and retail sectors in the two cities; and 3) investment opportunities there.
