~ In 1917 a strike was held among the employees of N, S, W. railways. Some employees o·ppoaed the. 'stJ:.Ute and remained at work. Trade Unions which Gu p\}oe-iQPermanent Way Association and the As so dation of Employees {Mechanical Bran eli of the N. S, W, Railways. These two amalgamated in 1930 to form the Railway Servjce Association. Previously de-registered unions were re-registered in 1920, the largest being Australian Railways Union. 1933 the R. S, ·A. as a State Industrial Union was re-named and registered in N. S, W, as Nj&tiona}. Union o! Railwaymen, N. S, W~ Bran£!!. The National Union of Railwaymen of Australia applied for Commonwealth registcration as an organisation of employees in the same year and was granted it; but an appeal against the registration was won and registration quashed, 7 December 1938 the N, U, R. of Au& ralia was again registered under the Commonwealth law, and an appeal against its registration (May 1939) was unsuccessful, 1938 the Government Railways Transport Staff Association amalgamated with the N. U, R. 1942 Department of Mh.in Roa.:is (Wages St!!tl Employees' Union amalgamated with the N, U, R. 1944-45 Government Tramway Electrical Branch Workers' Associa_tl!m amalgamated with N, U, R.
