PRESS KITS Group stage - Group A - Matchday 4 Wednesday, 1 December 2004 - 20:45 (local time) De Kuip - Rotterdam FEYENOORD FC SCHALKE 04 MATCH OFFICIALS Referee Matthew David Messias (ENG) Assistant referees Darren Drysdale (ENG), Glenn Turner (ENG) Fourth official Uriah Rennie (ENG) UEFA delegate Heinz Fahnler (AUT) MATCH BACKGROUND Former winners clash in Rotterdam The Group A match, between teams holding down the two top places, also features two of the recent winners of the UEFA Cup. Feyenoord won the 2002 UEFA Cup with a win over German opposition in BV Borussia Dortmund by 3-2 in the final. FC Schalke 04 were the last winners of the UEFA Cup in 1997 under the former two-legged final format, with their success on penalties against FC Internazionale Milano. Strong at home Although Feyenoord have met German teams on 16 occasions in various ties since the 1969/70 season, this will be the first time that they will have met the club from Gelsenkirchen. Feyenoord have been impressive at home with ten victories against German clubs in UEFA club competitions, while the other six matches at De Kuip stadium have ended in four draws and two defeats, those losses coming against VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach (1986/87 UEFA Cup second round) and VfB Stuttgart (1998/99 UEFA Cup first round). Overall Feyenoord have played 31 games against German clubs with twelve wins, ten draws and nine defeats. Feyenoord have scored 48 goals and conceded 49. Final success Feyenoord’s most recent meeting with a German club provided the club with one of its many trophies. The 3-2 win against Dortmund was played conveniently at Rotterdam, and two goals from Pierre van Hooijdonk and a third from Jon Dahl Tomasson gave Feyenoord a famous win. Limited experience Schalke have only met one Dutch team in UEFA club competitions, but it was also part of a significant success. On their way to the UEFA Cup success in 1997, Schalke beat Roda JC in their opening tie. The Germans won the first leg at home 3-0 with Marc Wilmots (8 minutes), Youri Mulder (14) and Ingo Anderbrügge (74) on target, and they were 2-0 ahead in Kerkrade until Roda found some late form and hit back to claim a 2-2 draw. Wilmots, who scored the first goal against Roda, would score the last – the final penalty to win the final. 1/9 12:42:30 uefa.com Matchday 4 - Group A - Wednesday, 1 December 2004 - PRESS KITS FEYENOORD-SCHALKE PLAYERS PROFILES Feyenoord Goalkeepers No Name Nat.
