Grasswick Index ................................................................................................................. 263 About the Contributors Lorraine Code is Distinguished Research Professor Emerita of Philosophy at York University in Toronto Canada and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. She was named the Distinguished Woman Philosopher for 2009 by the US Society for Women in Philosophy. Her principal area of research is feminist epistemology and the politics of knowledge and she has numerous publications in the field, including What Can She Know? Feminist Theory and the Construction of Knowledge (Cornell 1991) and Rhetorical Spaces: Essays on Gendered Locations (Routledge 1995). Her most recent book, largely written during her tenure of the Canada Council Killam Research Fellowship, is Ecological Thinking: The Politics of Epistemic Location, published by Oxford University Press in 2006. She is currently develo- ping a moral epistemology sensitive to vulnerability, and working on questions generated by the new epistemologies of ignorance, on knowing across differences, and on the contestability of ‘natural kinds.’ Nancy Daukas is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Guilford College, in Greensboro, NC. Her work focuses on questions in feminist epistemology, virtue epistemology, social epistemology, and the epistemology of testimony. A previous publication relevant to the work in this volume is ‘Epistemic Trustworthiness and Social Location’ (Episteme: Journal of Social Epistemology, Vol. 3 1–2 (2006), pp. 109–124). She has also published articles on teaching philosophy, epistemic contextualism, and skepticism. Carla Fehr is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Iowa State University. She works in the philosophy of biology, feminist philosophy and feminist science studies. She is a co–Principal Investigator for ISU ADVANCE <http://www.advance.iastate.edu/>, a $3.3 million National Science Foundation grant, which is designed to test strategies for promoting the advancement and retention of women and minorities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Her research investigates the impact of culture on biological explanations of topics related to sex and gender and on the social structures of scientific communities that promote excellent research. Samantha Frost is Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science, the Gender and Women’s Studies Program, and the Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She is the author of Lessons ix x About the Contributors from a Materialist Thinker: Hobbesian Reflections on Ethics and Politics (Stanford University Press, 2008) and co-editor, with Diana Coole, of New Materialisms: Ontology, Ethics, and Politics (Duke University Press 2010). Heidi E. Grasswick is Professor of Philosophy at Middlebury College in Vermont. She is also a regular contributor to the Women’s and Gender Studies Program at Middlebury. Her research focuses on feminist epistemology and social epistemology, particularly questions concerning the relationship between individual and commu- nities as knowers and the role of trust in knowledge. She has published in such journals as Hypatia, Synthese, and Social Epistemology. Sandra Harding is Professor in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at UCLA. Her teaching and research interests include feminist and postco- lonial theory, epistemology, research methodology and philosophy of science. Harding is the editor or author of 16 books, including The Science Question in Feminism (1986), Whose Science? Whose Knowledge? (1991), Is Science Multicultural? (1998), The Feminist Standpoint Theory Reader (2004), Science and Social Inequality (2006), Sciences From Below (2008), and The Postcolonial Science and Technology Studies Reader (2011). She was the coeditor (with Kathyrn Norberg) of Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society from 2000 to 2005. She has also served as a consultant on epistemology and philosophy of science issues for several UN organizations, including the Pan American Health Organization; the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM); and the UN Commission on Science and Technology for Development. Kristen Intemann is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Montana State University. Her research focuses on the roles of ethical, social, and political values in scientific research and the implications this has for scientific practices and conceptions of objectivity. She has published in journals including Philosophy of Science, Biology & Philosophy, Hypatia, Social Epistemology, FASEB Journal, and The European Journal of Epidemiology. Nancy Arden McHugh is Professor of Philosophy and department chair at Wittenberg University. She is the author of Feminist Philosophies A-Z and articles in feminist epistemology and philosophy of science. She is completing a manu- script, Actions Which Change the Face of the World, from which the article in this volume is drawn. Nancy is one of the founding members and co-chair of FEMMSS (Feminist Epistemology, Metaphysics, Methodology and Sciences Studies). She has also worked with Wittenberg University philosophy majors to develop STEP (Stand-Up for Ethics Program), which holds workshops in ethics for high school students in the Springfield, OH schools. Gaile Pohlhaus, Jr. is Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Affiliate of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Miami University (Ohio). Our motivating questions are: what new forms of feminist organizing are developing to resist sexism and what are the implications of thinking ethico-politically about feminist resistance which has the goals of social justice, equality and fairness? Reading the ESP leads to a conceptualisation of how infrapolitical feminist resistance emerges at grassroots level and between individuals in the form of affective solidarity, which become necessary in challenging neoliberal threats to women’s opportunity and equality.

The few essays by feminists published up to that time in the premier journal in bioethics, the Hastings Center Report, dealt solely with ethical issues surrounding women’s reproductive functions. All that has changed. The 1990s saw a steady stream of conferences, monographs, anthologies, and essays in learned journals that examine bioethical issues through a feminist lens, and now there is a burgeoning literature. In this seminar we will read some of this literature, to get a better idea of what feminist theory has to offer bioethics—and vice-versa. Texts for the course include Susan Sherwin’s No Longer Patient; Susan M. Wolf, ed., Feminism and Bioethics: Beyond Reproduction, Dorothy Roberts’s Killing the Black Body, and Rebecca Kukla’s Mass Hysteria. Seminar participants will do a presentation of one of the readings and lead the discussion for that meeting, for a fourth of their final grade. It explores existentialist tenets in feminist ethics and care ethics and reclaims existentialism as a resourceful theory in addressing global ethical issues. My dissertation moves beyond the once prevalent paradigm that feminist ethics should be devoid of any traditional ethical theories and it shows that an existential phenomenological ethics can complement feminist ethics in a productive way. The first chapter, introduces and discusses an existentialist notion of freedom based on Simone de Beauvoir and Jean Paul Sartre’s writings. In order to establish that human beings are metaphysically free, I explain notions of in-itself, for-itself, transcendence, immanence, facticity, and bad faith which are the basic notions of an existentialist notion of freedom.

  • Rethinking Feminist Ethics
    RETHINKING FEMINIST ETHICS The question of whether there can be distinctively female ethics is one of the most important and controversial debates in current gender studies, philosophy and psychology. Rethinking Feminist Ethics: Care, Trust and Empathy marks a bold intervention in these debates by bridging the ground between women theorists disenchanted with aspects of traditional ‘male’ ethics and traditional theorists who insist upon the need for some ethical principles. Daryl Koehn provides one of the first critical overviews of a wide range of alternative female/ feminist/feminine ethics defended by influential theorists such as Carol Gilligan, Annette Baier, Nel Noddings and Diana Meyers. She shows why these ethics in their current form are not defensible and proposes a radically new alternative. In the first section, Koehn identifies the major tenets of ethics of care, trust and empathy. She provides a lucid, searching analysis of why female ethics emphasize a relational, rather than individualistic, self and why they favor a more empathic, less rule-based, approach to human interactions. At the heart of the debate over alternative ethics is the question of whether female ethics of care, trust and empathy constitute a realistic, practical alternative to the rule- based ethics of Immanuel Kant, John Stuart Mill and John Rawls. Koehn concludes that they do not. Female ethics are plagued by many of the same problems they impute to ‘male’ ethics, including a failure to respect other individuals. In particular, female ethics favor the perspective of the caregiver, trustor and empathizer over the viewpoint of those who are on the receiving end of care, trust and empathy.

Once the door is unlocked, a better understanding of the distinctive nature of feminist research can occur. There are many questions surrounding feminist research. The most common question is: “What makes feminist research distinctive from traditional research within the Social Sciences?” In trying to answer this question, we need to examine feminist epistemology and the intertwining nature of epistemology, methodology (theory and analysis of how research should proceed), and methods (techniques for gathering data) utilized by feminist researchers. Feminist epistemology in contrast to traditional epistemologies is the foundation on which feminist methodology is built. In turn, the research that develops from this methodology differs greatly from research that develops from traditional methodology and epistemology. Therefore, I argue that one must have a general understanding of feminist epistemology and methodology before one can understand what makes this type of research unique. Such a foundation will assist us in our exploration of the realm of feminist research, while illuminating the differences between feminist and traditional research.     The Relevance of Feminist Epistemology and Feminist Ethics Gatien Laurol Florida Atlantic University Introduction Initially, I was hesitant to engage in the task of writing this essay. In my academic career, I have never studied feminist theory and felt it was not advisable for someone who has such limited knowledge to engage in any philosophical theorizing about feminist theory. Patriarchy, as I understand it, refers to the social, political and economic dominance of male power. Considering that I am a male who is the recipient of the social and political benefits of patriarchy, I was left to wonder if there was any way in which I can contribute to the recent studies of feminist epistemology in academia. It was not until after I was given the task of presenting a critical presentation on naturalized epistemology and feminist ethics that I was able to see that there are elements of feminist critiques that warrant critical recognition. Feminist theory is a misconceived topic in academia. Feminist theory is an intellectual movement that challenges the ways in which gender norms and values are sustained and the methodological and critical inquiry into the social and political structures that maintain them. It is through collaborative scholarship that feminist philosophers aim not only to understand the ways in which these norms subordinate women but also derive ways to overcome them. In essence, feminist theory repudiates traditional methods of philosophic inquiry that rely on detachment and distant engagement. Rather, feminist theory engages with various specialized fields of philosophy that recognizes the salience of the interconnected relationships that constitute our social, political, and ethical life.
