The name is also used for one of Norway’s counties that covers more than 5,500 square miles of the country’s southeast corner. It encompasses small coastal towns and villages and stretches far inland almost to the southeast corner of the vast Hardangervidda National Park. An historic region of Norway While there is plenty to see along the coast and in the county’s princi- pal cities of Skien and Porsgrunn, I’m focusing on the historic inner region also known as Upper Telemark. A primarily agricultural area, the region has retained Old Norse customs for much longer than the rest of Norway. This might at least in part explain why the Telemark dialect has a Norse ring to it. Kraken is probably a creature most Winter sports fans will know the region’s name because of the style of people will recognize. It’s been used in several movies, like Pirates of the skiing. The graceful style known as Telemark skiing dates back to the times Caribbean and Clash of the Titans, when skiing was a form of transport, and chair lifts were but a dream. • Lithostratigraphy and U-Pb Geochronology of the Telemark Supracrustals in the Bandak-Sauland Area, Te Le Mark, South Norway
NORWEGIAN JOURNAL OF GEOLOGY Lithostratigraphy and geochronologyof the Telemark supracrustals 119 U-Pb lithostratigraphy and geochronology of the Telemark supracrustals in the Bandak-Sauland area, Telemark, South Norway Kauko Laajoki, Fernando Corfu & Tom Andersen Laajoki, K., Corfu, F. &Andersen, T.: Lithostratigraphy and U-Pb geochronology of the Telemark supracrustals in the Bandak-Sauland area, Te le mark, South Norway. Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift,Vol. 82, pp. 119-138. Trondheim 2002, ISSN 029-196X. The Mesoproterowic Te lemark supracrustals in southern Norway have been subdivided into four groups: (l) the ca. 1500 Ma volcanic Rjukan group overlain by (2) the quartzite-dominatedSeljord group, itself overlain by (3) the ca. 1160 Ma volcanic-sedimentary Bandak group in the west and by (4) the undated Heddal group in the east. New mapping and U-Pb work provide considerable refinement to this stratigraphy. The Ljosdals vatnet porphyry near the base of the Bandak gro up has an age of 1155 ± 3 Ma age, but it overlies that part of the Seljord gro up, which was folded and eroded before deposition of the Bandak gro up. The Brunkeberg porphyry, which has previously been correlated to the Rjukan gro up, yields an identical age of 1155 ± 2 Ma. It is unconformably overlain by a quartzite, which has also been included into the Seljord group. This group must, therefore, consist of two separate successions separated by a period of folding, here referred to as the Vindeggengro up (older) and the Lifiellgro up (younger). The former represents a thick, fluvial, shallow sea sandstone - intertidal heterolithic sequence, whereas the latter is composed of a relati vely thin and mature beach-shoreline sandstone sequence.

  • The Mesoproterozoic Sub-Heddal Unconformity, Sauland, Telemark
NORWEGIAN jOURNAL OF GEOLOGY The sub-Heddalunconform ity, Te lemark 139 The Mesoproterozoic sub-Heddal unconformity, Sauland, Te lemark, south Norway. Kauko Laajoki Laajoki, K. The Mesoproterowic sub-Heddal unconformity, Sauland, Telemark, south Norway. Norsk Geologisk Tidsskrift, Vol. 82, pp. 139-152. Trondheim 2002, ISSN 029-196X. In the Sauland area, the Vindeggen group, which corresponds to the northern part of the traditional Seljord group, is overlain unconformably by the Lifjellgro up (southern part of the traditional Seljord group), whereas the Heddal gro up unconformably over Iies both of these groups. The sub Heddal unconformity transects progressively older rocks when moving from south to north. In the south, the 1145 Ma old Skogsåa porphyryof the Heddal group Iies either directly on the Lifjell orthoquartzite or is separated from it by a thin layer of epiclastic muscovite schist. At Heksfjellet, the unconformity transects the basal Heksfjellet conglomerates of the Lifjellgro up. Here the Heddal gro up starts with a c. l m thick cobbly mica schist, which passes upwards via an acid volcanic detritus zone into the Skogsåa porphyry. Farther to the north, in the Moltelia area, the unconformity joins and even intersects the sub-Lifjell unconformity.Th e muscovite schist and the Skogsåa porphyry Iie on the rugged, karst-like, palaeoweathered surface developed on the uppermost Vindeggen orthoquartzite, indicating that the Lifjell Gro up was eroded before deposition of the Heddal group. Consequently, the Vindeggen-Lifjell/Heddal contact is a distinct stratigraphic unconformity. Recent age determinations place the age of the uncon formity to be between 1150 Ma and 1145 Ma.

The word stave (meaning ‘post, pole’ in Norwegian) derives from the buildings’ post and lintel construction, giving the churches their characteristic style. The structures display a highly developed tradition of wooden Christian buildings, which during the Middle Ages (1050–1500) where the most common in Norway, their number can be estimated at around a thousand. There were probably at least as widespread in other areas (e.g. on the territory of present-day Germany and Russia), but they did not remain in such a large number from the early period. However, the number have declined dramatically, and today only 28 are preserved. The article aims to expand the knowledge of the unique and irreplaceable wooden architecture of the stave churches. Although we consider the wooden churches to be one of the characteristics of Scandinavia tra- ditionally, they mix and carry the influences of other cultures and countries. The heritage and memorial role of wooden churches, as well as the motif of the combination of different architectural and religious elements, represent an interesting comparison to similar phenomena in the Carpathian Basin. Transylvania and especially the Maramureş region are also famous for their wooden churches and the rich carved and painted iconostasis.
