Just a few weeks after Norway’s Olym- pic squad brought home a disappointing four bronze medals, 25 Norwegians headed to Rio de Janeiro to compete in the 2016 Para- lympic Games. From September 7 to 18, the athletes competed in 39 medal events in 10 different sports: archery, athletics, boccia, cycling, equestrian dressage, rowing, sailing, shooting, swimming, and table tennis. The top medal contenders heading into Rio were considered to be swimmers Sarah Louise Rung and Andreas Bjørnstad, rower Birgit Skarstein, sailor Bjørnar Erikstad, Tommy Urhaug in table tennis, and Ann Cathrin Lübbe in equestrian dressage. Erikstad, a four-time Paralympian who competes in 2.4mR sailing, had the honor of carrying the Norwegian flag into the opening ceremony. “When it became clear that the sailors would attend the opening ceremony, the choice was obvious. The use of wood as a building material has long been marginal in today’s steel and concrete cityscapes. That may soon change, in face of a renaissance in wood building technology driven in part by environmental concern. A building finished last December in Norway may well mark the turning point. The longevity of wood as a building material is nigh legendary. Hōryū-ji, liter- ally “The Temple of the Flourishing Law,” in Nara Prefecture, Japan, is among the world’s oldest, if not the oldest known wooden build- ing. Erected in the year 607, it has withstood weather and earthquakes for 14 centuries, the peak of its 32 meter (105 ft.) pagoda intact. Daytona Strong Taste of Norway Editor

One of the most recognizable faces of Norwegian cooking, at least to American au- diences, is Andreas Viested, host of the televi- sion series New Scandinavian Cooking. He’s author of the 2003 book Kitchen of Light: The New Scandinavian Cooking, which is just as pleasurable to read and cook from to- day, 13 years after its release. His Oslo res- taurant, St. Lars, has been open since 2011, and he also opened the Geitmyra Culinary Center for Children that year, with the goal of teaching children where food comes from. I had a chance to meet Viestad at the Nor- dic Culinary Conference in Seattle this past spring, and I appreciated hearing about his experience with how his new Scandinavian cooking paralleled the rise of New Nordic cuisine—the movement that began in 2004. I asked Viestad if he’d be willing to talk about Norwegian food through the lens of his expe- rience for The Norwegian American, as well as showing readers a bit about what life is like for him in Norway these days.

One of the principle tourist attractions in —aside from the quaint and koselig town itself—is Maihaugen. And for good reason! In this open-air museum with over 200 historical buildings you’ll see farms and villages full of old wooden buildings, moved there from all over Gudbrandsdalen. You’ll see animals and reenactors performing little plays on-site. You may be able to taste porridge, get a lesson on Norwegian vowels, or watch how the old men in their busserulls would have watered the fields in days of yore. It goes on and on, with a pond or two, a stave church from the 1200s, fishing cabins, and if you’re lucky enough to have a clear day, the gorgeous Norwegian scenery. Maihaugen also houses a postal musuem and the new and improved Olympics Muse- um (covered by David Nikel in our February 26, 2016, issue; www.norwegianamerican. Photos: Emily C. David Nikel Trondheim, Norway

Ever since I first moved to Norway back in 2011, friends and family have asked me what my favorite part of Norway is. Some- times I say Tromsø for its lively pubs, sur- prising number of festivals, and access to the northern lights. Other times I say Røros, a delightful living museum in the middle of nowhere. But more often than not, my answer is Ålesund. This small town, home to fewer than 50,000 people, is in the northern part of the region known as Fjord Norway. It’s built on a series of islands, and there can be few more picturesque settings even in a country with as much natural beauty as Norway. So without further ado, here are a few of the many reasons I’m in love with Ålesund.

The architecture Art Nouveau is considered a “to- tal” art style, embracing architecture, graphic art, interior design, and most of the decorative arts. By this definition, Ålesund can be considered the “total” Art Nouveau town. Have you ever had a Teddy bear (bamse) or stuffed animal (kosedyr)? My grandparents gave me my first Teddy bear when I was 13 years old. I named him Christmas (because he was a Christmas present). Thirteen is kind of old to get your first Teddy bear, but I was excited and I still have him here in Norway! Do you know where the name Teddy bear came from? American Presi- dent Teddy Roosevelt way back in 1902 refused to shoot a bear tied to a tree. A newspaper cartoonist drew a picture of that day and a candy shop owner was inspired to make a stuffed bear. Those bears, originally Teddy’s bear, became so popular that candy shop owner became a full time Teddy bear maker! Stuffed bears, however, were popular before they became famous. In Germany, people could order them from a 1894 catalog. You also might know the popular jump rope rhyme (called a skipping rhyme in British English) about Teddy bears called “Teddy bear, teddy bear, turn around.” There are many versions; here is one:

There are goodnight songs (God natt and Vuggesang), a song about dancing (Nå skal jeg lære deg å danse), a song about a squirrel (Ekornet klatrer i treet), and of course songs about Teddy bears. In a newspaper article in the Trønder Avisa on August 10, Jorid says that some children miss having someone close, like mommy or daddy, and that can be a little hard for them. But a Teddy bear can be a friend that helps these chil- dren feel safe. Jorid’s songs are also that way, helping children feel happy and safe. “It is important that all children are seen and heard,” she says. All the pictures in this brand-new songbook are drawn by Sanna Revdal, an artist and art teacher from Finland, and a CD with all the songs comes with the book. Twelve of the songs are also available on another CD with full musical accompaniment including fiddle, cello, guitar, banjo, and accordian!
