Association Highlight Association: Bankstown Basketball Association What year was Bankstown Basketball Association Established? 1964 How many registered members does your association have? 2,996 How many courts do you use for your association? Seven (7) What were the Association’s highlight achievements in 2014? On 22nd March 2014 the Association celebrated its fifty (50) year anniversary. The celebration centred around having seven courts built to play on by 1978, being a foundation member of the men’s National Basketball League, being a foundation member of the women’s National Basketball League, the Banks- town Lady Bruins being the only team from NSW to win the Australian Club Championship in 1982 and the many other titles we have won on the way. It was a great night and the celebration was attended by 348 past and present members at the Bankstown Sports Club. What does the Association hope to achieve in the next two years? As in every sporting organisations there are periods where rebuilding has to take place. This is current- ly happening in our junior women’s program and our priority is to achieve that in the next two years. What priority(s) is the Association currently focused on? The association is operating at full capacity and we are turning away teams wanting to play in our junior and senior competitions. We need access to more courts and are currently working with the Bankstown Council to resolve this issue. What players, volunteers, officials or other participants is the Association currently looking to recruit? Coaching volunteers are hard to find especially with the time commitment they are required to put in. So we are always on the lookout for these volunteers and ways we can entice them to commit. 2014 Alex Delaney NBL GREAT PERFORMANCES BY When the hosted the 36ers at the Sydney Entertain- ment Centre on the 9th of November, we all anticipated a great contest be- tween two teams motivated to win for different reasons. Adelaide was in red hot form, behind the NBL Player of the Week . The Kings let- ting one slip from the previous week against the Cairns Taipans, who were undefeated at the time. What emerged from that game was Adam Gibson hitting his first 8 shots, on his way to scoring 30 points. Making him one of only 3 players to score back to back 30+ games since the NBL switch back to playing 40 minute games. While Sydney’s became the fourth player in NBL history to score 30+ points, 5+ assists, 5+ blocks and 15+ rebounds. He is also the first to accomplish this defeat in the modern 40 minute era. The play of Adam Gibson and Josh Childress got me thinking about some of the all time greats moments that I thought are worth re-living. If you can think of the many which I have left out, get on my Facebook page...... facebook.com/basketballnsw. 's 50-point game was on the 9th of March at Hisense vs Kings, he went 20-from-33 the floor, 9-from-14 from three-point range and 1-from-3 the foul line. The only other Australians ever to score 50 points in an NBL game are , , Martin Cattalini, Michael Johnson and Goulding. sored 71pts at Frankston while playing for West Adelaide on 25th May 1984. He shot 25-from-41 from the field and 4-from-12 three-pointers and 17-from-22 free-throws. The week before, against Coburg, Green had 59-points - West Adelaide lost both games though. Andrew Gaze averaged a league record 44.1ppg in 1987 despite missing 5 games in the middle of the year. His last 8 games that year produced scores of 60, 41, 41, 51, 47, 48, 54 and 52 for an average over that span of 49.2 ppg.

Brisbane Bullets won 21 straight games in 2007 before ending the streak in game 2 of the grand final to the Tigers. They recovered to win the championship 3 wins to 1.

What about Tiny Pinder as the only man ever to lead the league in scoring and rebounding in the same season. In 1985 for the Sydney Supersonics, Pinder averaged 33.5ppg and17.8 rebounds per game.

What about Darren Rowe the only man to have a quadruple double in NBL history? 25 points, 11 assists, 11 blocks and 17 rebounds for Geelong vs North 28th July 1990.

Page 4 Top 10 Christmas Presents for a Baller 10) Reversible singlet – This allows a ball player to be prepared for any game that needs to be divided up into two sides. Plus, nobody wants to see you with your shirt off!

9) Trampoline – For those who will never have the feeling of gliding through the air for a slam dunk, now you can.

8) Best Basketball DVDs – Space Jam for the kids, Glory Road, because it’s my second favourite and the best basketball movie ever is “Hoosiers” starring Gene Hackman.

7) NBA 2K15 – You can achieve two things by this gift. First, its fun and you can play for hours without knowing. Two, it gets you updated on all the player movements in the NBA.

6) Skins or Under Armour – If you are working as hard as you should these will keep your sweating under control.

5) A Net – Nothing worse than shooting the ball perfectly on your outdoor hoop and the net is torn up and you don’t get the satisfaction of the SWISH that you deserve.

4) Sydney Kings Family Pass – The Kings have a three game Christmas Package Gift which is a great night and great value for the entire family. Don’t forget your J Chill t-shirt

3) Shooting Sleeve – This bit of gear is has absolutely no benefit to shooting but the young kids love it! So even if the kid can’t shoot, at least they are looking the part.

2) New Air Jordan's – Shoes from the greatest player ever! Now you can keep your old pair in the boot of your car just in case you are driving past a game. “Yo man I got next”

And the number one Christmas present any self respecting ball player would love......

1) A Basketball – Basketball like surfing, is a lifestyle. The more you have the ball in your hand the more it’s a part of you. You don’t even have to think about it, the ball just comes with you.

I’m just sayin … By The Carfino Being a commentator is almost as much fun as being a player. Well, at least it's the next best thing, having the pleasure of being a part of the game for 24 years after I bounced a professional basketball. The best part of my job is that giving my opinion is what I'm encouraged to do. So I thought I'd share with you my latest rant....

The Sydney Kings game will be remembered for the Josh Childress incident, but I want to focus on the for- gotten incident from the game, Ben Madgen being ejected for two technical fouls received for flopping.

Flopping is a problem because in order to get a charging call in the game of basketball you must fall, if you don't you won't get one called your way. I spoke to Mal Cooper be- fore the Kings 36ers game and he didn't completely agree. He said that if a player is dis- placed by the offensive player, the charging foul will be called. Players will receive a warning if the reaction is not consistent with force in which the defender is struck.

Even if the officials started to get this right I don't believe a player should be ejected for flopping, the crime just doesn't seem to fit the punishment. In my opinion, the harshest penalty should be two foul shots and possession. I'm just sayin...... Page 5

Page 6 Save the Date—2015 Basketball NSW Hall of Fame

In 2011 Basketball NSW conducted its inaugural and highly successful Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction Ceremony. 2013 saw this success continue combining the induction ceremony with the 75th year anniversary celebration. Basketball NSW is continuing this tradition with an induction being held in 2015, honouring those who have made outstanding contributions or have achieved at a high level in basketball in NSW.

It is extremely important that our sport at this time in our history and those in the future have a sense of the history of basketball in NSW. This history becomes a rich source of inspira- tion and passion for all basketball people. The development of an inner soul for our sport is imperative not only for past recognition but for providing a guiding light for the future for all in our sport to follow.

The Basketball NSW Hall of Fame is a Biennial event, recognising those who have contributed to Basketball in NSW.

2015 Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction Ceremony When: Friday 13th March, 2015 Where: Albert Palais Function Centre
