This venue will also host the conclusion of the handball tournaments and Paralympic wheelchair basketball and rugby. An impressive white cloud-like structure, it looks light in spite of its very large size – 35m tall and large enough to fit a jumbo jet inside. It is expected to be lit up by coloured lighting London 2012 during the Games, similarly to Bayern Munich’s impressive football stadium. The Basketball Arena was designed and built specifically as a temporary structure and is North Greenwich Arena set to be dismantled following the Paralympic (formerly O2 Arena and Millennium Dome) Games, to be reused for other major sporting Location: and non-sporting events, fitting into the Drawdock Road, Greenwich Peninsula Organising Committee’s plans of delivering Year of construction: 1999 (redevelopment not only on the Games themselves, but also a 2007, 2012) legacy for sport in Britain. Spectators: 20,000 Estimated cost: £ 789,000,000 (Millennium Dome) Set to host the climax of the men’s (Quarter- Finals onwards) and the women’s (Semi-Finals onwards) basketball tournaments (as well as gymnastics), the North Greenwich Arena is the largest indoor Olympic venue for 2012. With a height exceeding 50m, the marquee-like structure is supported by 12 pillars of 100m extending out of the canopy. Having become one of London’s most recognisable landmarks, the North Greenwich Arena is also among the city’s largest buildings. Originally built as a celebratory exhibition centre for the new millennium, it was redeveloped in 2007 into a multi-purpose entertainment venue, hosting concerts, sporting events as well as numerous other entertainment shows and events. The Dome, as it is commonly known to Londoners, is no stranger to basketball as it has previously hosted several NBA Europe games, including the first-ever regular season games played in Europe in March 2011, when the Toronto Raptors took on the New Jersey London 2012 Nets. 05 2012 MEN’S OLYMPICS ArgentinA LITHUANIA AUSTRALIA NIGERIA BRAZIL RUSSIA CHINA SPAIN FRANCE TUNISIA great britain USA 2012 MEN’S OLYMPICS 06 LONDON, 29 JULY - 12 AUGUST Qualifying process for the London 2012 Olympic Basketball Tournament FOR MEN According to the FIBA Internal Regulations, Olympic qualification is achieved as follows 12 teams will take part in the 2012 Olympic Basketball tournament for men, from July 29 to 12 August. • 1 place for the host nation (Great Britain) • 1 place for the FIBA World Champion (USA) • 2 places for FIBA Americas (2011 FIBA Americas Championship winner and runner-up | Argentina & Brazil) • 2 places for FIBA Europe (2011 EuroBasket winner and runner-up | Spain and France) • 1 place for FIBA Africa (2011 FIBA Africa Championship winner | Tunisia) • 1 place for FIBA Asia (2011 FIBA Asia Championship winner | China) • 1 place for FIBA Oceania (2011 FIBA Oceania Championship winner | Australia) • 3 through Olympic Qualifying Tournament | Russia, Lithuania & Nigeria London2012.fiba.com Your source for Olympic Basketball Olympic Qualifying Tournament, Caracas, Venezuela, 2 to 8 July 12 team tournament (top 3 teams earn a place in the Olympic Basketball tournament) • 4 places for FIBA Europe (EuroBasket 2011 ranks 3-6 | Russia, The Former Yougoslav Republic of Macedonia, Lithuania, Greece) • 3 places for FIBA Americas (2011 FIBA Americas Championship ranks 3-5 | Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico & Venezuela) • 2 places for FIBA Africa (2011 FIBA Africa Championship ranks 2-3 | Angola & Nigeria) • 2 places for FIBA Asia (2011 FIBA Asia Championship ranks 2-3 | Jordan & Korea) • 1 place for FIBA Oceania (2011 FIBA Oceania Championship runner-up | New Zealand) 07 COMPETITION SYSTEM The Olympic Basketball Tournaments for Men and Women will consist of a Preliminary Round, Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Finals.
