Hard slog ahead of Sixers' revival Project: 2010 Hits Date: 10/14/2010 Media Type: Print Tone: Positive Outlet: Advertiser (Australia) Journalist: BOTI NAGY City: Australia State: n/a

ADELAIDE has a lot of work to do to return to NBL play-off action this year after crashing into the bomb shelter for the first time last season

The problem for the 36ers though is not their work rate, which is second-to-none this off-season under new rookie coach Marty Clarke

It is simply the fact is not the only club to have made off-season improvements

Reigning champion and title favourite Perth arguably has upgraded from 2010 with Matthew Knight an improvement in the centre on and Cam Tovey emerging as greater weekly value than retired veteran Martin Cattalini

After all, Cat at 36 was not quite the Cattalini of 26. And Tovey is 25

The Wildcats claimed the pre-season Top End Challenge with many of their players from last year - , Stephen Weigh, , Brad Robbins for example - playing with even greater confidence and surety

Cairns reaching the final was a plus for a program which looks as if it will cause some headaches

Ayinde Ubaka gives the Taipans a genuine playmaker and if Ronald Dorsey can play, the size of Ian Crosswhite, second-effort of Dusty Rychart and the coup of securing Alex Loughton will make Cairns murder on its night. The question-marks are over veterans and Aaron Grabau. The former can shoot with anyone on his night but there are less of those each year

And defender Grabau is not as quick as he used to be

New Zealand also remains intriguing, contingent on how the "situation" pans out

The NBA's , who flirted with the Breakers' superstar after he finished the world championship in Turkey last month as its second lead scorer, released him this week. The latest information is he will be back for round two. (If he isn't picked up elsewhere.) New Breakers import Gary Wilkinson proved very efficient in Darwin, a big man with size, range and also attitude. Can't wait til he runs into new Blaze forward . Fireworks? You bet

Gold Coast never had its full team on the floor but dumping ageing import Bennett Davison for Worthington was a big step forward. Davison's best days are in the rear-view mirror - his was one of coach 's more curious signings

Chris Goulding, , Anthony Petrie, James Harvey, Stephen Hoare, Pero Vasiljevic - there are some quality tools here. Let's hope import James Maye isn't the other type. Headphones during warm-ups? Please. How many ways can you spell "wanker"? Townsville is another team in top four contention, imports Gabe Freeman and Will Blalock just what it needed. Schenscher, big Ben Allen and Russell Hinder give the Crocs the type of size which not only can match the behemoths but also the pace to keep with Perth's runners. Watch out

Melbourne will be playing "monster ball" with three players looking down on 210cm and Cam Tragardh at 208cm. But coach Al Westover has some volatile and fragile pieces, leaving it as a mystery group

Wollongong looks similar to 2010, an upgrade on Tywain McKee as a talent but not necessarily as a playmaker. Coach Gordie McLeod will ensure they are tough but 2010 might have been their high

Sydney's return boosts a league back on free-to-air television with One-HD but the Kings will be more a nuisance than a regular contender

Adelaide brings in imports Craig Winder and Troy DeVries and at some point must start opening Daniel Johnson. Otherwise the question becomes will superior work rate alone be enough? Season 2009-10 was the league's most even since it launched in 1979 and there's little to suggest 2010-11 will not be as tight

The difference was in those early years the NBL gave us Hall of Famers such as , and . Now we have players who, through no fault of their own, are poor man's versions of those hardwood heroes

Perhaps Winder, Freeman and CJ Bruton show elements of the games played by Green, Loggins and Bruton Snr respectively, but flair and excitement is what the NBL badly needs to recapture an audience

That and an influx of young new faces to watch develop. The 36ers won't be found wanting there

OUT: Nathan Herbert (knee), John Gilchrist (knee), Cortez Groves (Aztecs), Matt Burston (Melbourne), David Cooper (ret), Tom Garlepp (Gold Coast), Chris Molitor (football)

NEW: Marty Clarke (Coach-AIS), *Craig Winder (Rio Grande Valley), *Troy DeVries (Sant Josep Girona), Daniel Johnson (Melbourne), (Gothia Basket), Jeff Dowdell (Townsville), Mitchell Creek (AIS), Tom Daly (Sturt)

Best case: The high work rate allows them to pinch a few unexpected wins to go with a good home record and they finish a strong fifth

Worst case: Size matters and they stay eighth, though no longer last, at least

Money man: Adam Ballinger Predicted finish: 8th

Time-Out: The difference between Clarke and Mike Dunlap is all the players have bought into his philosophy so the move upward could be quick

CAIRNS TAIPANS COACH: Aaron Fearne (11-17, 39%) 2010: 11-17, 7th BACK: Aaron Grabau, Ian Crosswhite, Dusty Rychart, Phill Jones

OUT: Kerry Williams (knee), (ret), Dwayne Vale ("I'm not Mike Dunlap" one man show), Rich Melzer (D-League), Julien Mills (skipped)

NEW: Alex Loughton (Ourense Baloncesto), *Ayinde Ubaka (Gold Coast), Daniel Dillon, Dean Brebner, *Ronald Dorsey (Etendard de Brest) Best case: The Taipans strike on the road and "do a Wollongong", surprising enough teams to grab a play-off spot

Worst case: Ronald Dorsey is more like Tommy Dorsey, Loughton starts pouting, Dusty is rusty and the Taipans' flight plans bring the usual near misses

Money man: Alex Loughton Predicted finish: 7th

Time-Out: Ian Crosswhite has lost so much weight, two Cairns fast food outlets are in danger of going out of business

GOLD COAST BLAZE COACH: Joey Wright (135-82, 62%) 2010: 16-12, 4th, lost semi final series to Perth BACK: , Adam Gibson, James Harvey, Anthony Petrie

OUT: Mika Vukona (NZ), , Greg Vanderjagt (forgotten), Ayinde Ubaka (Cairns), Erron Maxey (Gulf of Mexico), Tyson Demos (Wollongong), (asst coach), (wilderness) NEW: Stephen Hoare (Townsville), Tom Garlepp (Adelaide), Jason Cadee (AIS), *James Maye (Indios de Mayaguez), Pero Vasiljevic (North Adelaide), Shaun Gleeson (QBL), Mark Worthington (Melbourne) Best case: Joey once again weaves his magic, combining this volatile, disparate but very talented group into a title contender

Worst case: The team's personality disorders turn into dysfunction and Joey longs for the happy times with Eddy

Money man: Mark Worthington Predicted finish: 4th

Time-Out: Now he's an assistant coach, Pero Cameron can regularly be heard at practice uttering his two favourite words: "pan fried"

MELBOURNE TIGERS COACH: Al Westover (128-62, 67%) 2010: 11-17, 6th BACK: Daryl Corletto, Tommy Greer, Bennie Lewis

OUT: (ret), (ret), Mark Worthington (Gold Coast), Ben Knight (Sydney), (Gong Show), Daniel Johnson (Adelaide), Nathan Crosswell (Townsville), Mike Rose (Botanic Garden), (stay tuned)

NEW: Cameron Tragardh (Wollongong), Matt Burston (Adelaide), (Utah Flash), *Eric Devendorf (University of Syracuse), (Dandenong), Wade Helliwell (PAOK), *TJ Campbell (University of Portland) Best case: Having seen how the other half lives, Westover pulls his team of Lurches and Frankensteins into an on-court monster and they reach the grand final

Worst case: Nevill misses games attending Addams Family reunions, Burston and Helliwell fall foul of injuries and the group implodes

Money man: Eric Devendorf Predicted finish: 5th

Time-Out: Early season betting says the "Cam Tragardh at small forward" experiment will last one round less than the "David Barlow at point guard" plan did

NEW ZEALAND BREAKERS COACH: (71-87, 45%) 2010: 15-13, 5th

BACK: Kirk Penney, CJ Bruton, , Tom Abercrombie, , Corey Webster, Alex Pledger, *Kevin Braswell OUT: Oscar Forman (Wollongong), Tony Ronaldson (ret), Jeremiah Trueman (Perth), Rick Rickert (R&R) NEW: *Gary Wilkinson (Utah State Uni), Mika Vukona (Gold Coast)

Best case: Everyone recognises this is their last shot in the locker and they make it to the grand final

Worst case: Age makes CJ look more like BJ (Carter), Boucher has to start grabbing teammates' singlets, Braswell can't walk past a Krispy Kreme outlet and the Breakers are broken up

Money man: Kirk Penney Predicted finish: 3rd

Time-Out: Tony Ronaldson knew it was time to retire when he didn't have enough time to get up during time-outs

PERTH WILDCATS COACH: Rob Beveridge (42-51, 45%) 2010: 17-11, 1st, won grand final 2-1 from Wollongong

BACK: , Damian Martin, *, Stephen Weigh, Jesse Wagstaff, Brad Robbins, Drew Williamson OUT: Luke Schenscher (Townsville), Martin Cattalini (ret), (ret), Galen Young (shadow boxing), Sam Harris (Adelaide)

NEW: Matthew Knight (Soproni Sordogok), Cameron Tovey (Townsville), Shawn Dennis (asst coach), Jeremiah Trueman (NZ), (WABL)

Best case: The Wildcats repeat

Worst case: The Wildcats repeat

Money man: Kevin Lisch Predicted finish: 1st

Time-Out: Unlike Matthew Knights at Essendon, Perth's Matthew Knight's deal WILL be honoured and extended, the guy arguably the NBL's next great centre

SYDNEY KINGS COACH: Ian Robilliard (R) 2010: Oblivion NEW: Ian Robilliard (coach), Ben Knight (Melbourne), *Taj McCullough (VEF Riga), Julian Khazzouh (Ironi Kfar Hamaccabia Ramat Gan), *Rod Grizzard (Adelaide), (Wollongong), Luke Cooper (VEF Riga), Graeme Dann (Parramatta), Blagoj Janev (Rabotnicki), Damien Ryan (Fileni Bpa Jesi), Ben Madgen (Eastern SBL), Conner Henry (asst coach)

Best case: The Kings revitalise interest in hoops in the Harbour City with some feisty home performances

Worst case: The talent pool is just a trifle too shallow and the Kings need another TV ad controversy to rekindle interest

Money man: Julian Khazzouh Predicted finish: 9th

Time-Out: The Kings will be going ahead in bounds and not leaps but just having the purple-and-golds back is great for the league

TOWNSVILLE CROCODILES COACH: (74-58, 56%) 2010: 16-12, 3rd, lost semi final series to Wollongong

BACK: Russell Hinder, Michael Cedar, Peter Crawford, Todd Blanchfield, Brad Williamson, Chris Cedar OUT: Corey Williams (Hall of Mirrors), Kelvin Robertson (knee rehab), Rolan Roberts (dunk classes), Cam Tovey (Perth), Stephen Hoare (Gold Coast), Jeff Dowdell (Adelaide)

NEW: Ben Allen (St Mary's University), Luke Schenscher (Perth), Nathan Crosswell (Melbourne), *Gabe Freeman (San Miguel), *Will Blalock (Reno Bighorns), Pat Reidy (asst coach) Best case: The Crocodiles make it snappy and finally win the town's first NBL flag

Worst case: The Crocs slump to be the second best NBL team in

Money man: Gabe Freeman Predicted finish: 2nd

Time-Out: There's not a lot wrong with this line-up which is even deep at team mascot

WOLLONGONG HAWKS COACH: Gordie McLeod (134-158, 46%) 2010: 16-12, 2nd, lost grand final 1-2 to Perth

BACK: Glen Saville, Mat Campbell, Larry Davidson, Tim Coenraad, Rhys Martin, *Dave Gruber, Daniel Jackson, Tim Behrendorff, Zac Delaney

OUT: Cam Tragardh (Melbourne), Ty McKee (driving lessons) NEW: Oscar Forman (NZ), *Gary Ervin (Halifax Rainmen), Tyson Demos (Gold Coast) Best case: McLeod drags another playoff run out of those old Sav and Campbell legs, the Big O embraces an inside game, Davidson continues his evolution and the Hawks make it to the semis

Worst case: The battlers are left battling, unable to reproduce last year's near fairytale

Money man: Gary Ervin Predicted finish: 6th

Time-Out: Oscar Forman's six offensive rebounds in three games of the Top End Challenge almost matched his career output at New Zealand

Utah college enrollments up 5 percent Project: 2010 Hits Date: 10/14/2010 Media Type: Print Tone: Positive Outlet: Deseret Morning News Journalist: Paul Koepp, Deseret News City: Salt Lake City State: UT

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah's college enrollment grew again this fall with a 5 percent bump in head count over last year, according to figures released Wednesday.

Utah Valley University added the most new students, 3,905 more than last year — a 14 percent increase.

That put UVU over 32,000 students total and accounted for nearly half of the 8,156 statewide enrollment increase, bringing the total enrolled to 173,016. The number of Utah students taking the full-time equivalent of 15 undergraduate semester hours rose by 6 percent to 109,520.

Utah Commissioner of Higher Education William Sederburg said it was "encouraging to see students continue to vote with their feet" and that the eight state schools have been able to accommodate so many despite a 12 percent budget cut to higher education this year. He said he was especially pleased with increases in Hispanics (16 percent), African-Americans (6 percent) and women (5 percent).

Looking ahead to next year, the continued growth could lead to "modest" tuition hikes similar to last year, when tuition went up 9 percent statewide, Sederburg said.

UVU President Matthew Holland said the announcement of the school's head count of 32,670 — just one student behind the and about 1,300 fewer than at Salt Lake Community College — was a "watershed moment."

"We've done all this while maintaining university quality. We planned for it and made a major push to hire new faculty," he said. "Having said that, I do think we're at our limit."

UVU and other colleges offering two-year degrees have "soft caps" in place, meaning they don't turn anyone away but cannot serve all the students who want to take certain classes. The school is adding evening, weekend and online courses to try to meet demand.

To ensure UVU is on a sound financial path, developing a local tax base is a "key point of consideration," Holland said. UVU officials have had internal discussions about pushing for local sales, property or income taxes to support the school, although they have not yet brought the idea to state lawmakers.

Sederburg said he has raised the issue with Utah County legislators but found little support for new taxes.

The former College of Eastern Utah, now part of Utah State University as of July 1, had the biggest proportional growth with a 21 percent increase, adding 461 students. Southern Utah University was the only school to shrink, declining by 42 students to 8,024.

USU touted a record fall head count of 25,767, up 3 percent from a year ago, and a 26 percent increase in minority enrollment to 1,663 students.

The U.'s 4 percent growth was slightly higher than expected due to higher second-year retention rates, Sederburg said.

Dixie State College's 13 percent full-time equivalent increase was the largest in the state, while its head count grew 11 percent to 8,755. President Stephen Nadauld thanked faculty and staff "who have bent over backwards to accommodate the extra students."

SLCC, which had braced for a large spike, saw less than a 1 percent increase in head count, but that number will rise when students registering for a newly added October term are factored in. e-mail: [email protected]
