Turkish literature (Turkish: Türk edebiyatı or Türk yazını) comprises both oral compositions and written texts in the Turkish language, either in its Ottoman form or in less exclusively literary forms, such as that spoken in the Republic of Turkey today. The Ottoman Turkish language, which forms the basis of much of the written corpus, was influenced by Persian and Arabic and used the Ottoman Turkish alphabet. The history of the broader Turkic literature spans a period of nearly 1,300 years. The oldest extant records of written Turkic are the Orhon inscriptions, found in the Orhon River valley in central Mongolia and dating to the 7th century. Subsequent to this period, between the 9th and 11th centuries, there arose among the nomadic Turkic peoples of Central Asia a tradition of oral epics, such as the Book of Dede Korkut of the Oghuz Turks—the linguistic and cultural ancestors of the modern Turkish people—and the Manas epic of the Kyrgyz people. Beginning with the victory of the Seljuks at the Battle of Manzikert in the late 11th century, the Oghuz Turks began to settle in Anatolia, and in addition to the earlier oral traditions there arose a written literary tradition issuing largely—in terms of themes, genres, and styles— from Arabic and Persian literature.

    A Monster for Our Times: Reading Sade across the Centuries Matthew Bridge Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2011 © 2011 Matthew Bridge All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT A Monster for Our Times: Reading Sade across the Centuries Matthew Bridge This doctoral dissertation looks at several readings and interpretations of the works of the Marquis de Sade, from the eighteenth century to the present. Ever since he was imprisoned under the Old Regime following highly publicized instances of physical and sexual abuse, Sade has remained a controversial figure who has been both condemned as a dangerous criminal and celebrated as an icon for artistic freedom. The most enduring aspect of his legacy has been a vast collection of obscene publications, characterized by detailed descriptions of sexual torture and murder, along with philosophical diatribes that offer theoretical justifications for the atrocities. Not surprisingly, Sade’s works have been subject to censorship almost from the beginning, leading to the author’s imprisonment under Napoleon and to the eventual trials of his mid-twentieth-century publishers in France and Japan. The following pages examine the reception of Sade’s works in relation to the legal concept of obscenity, which provides a consistent framework for textual interpretation from the 1790s to the present. I begin with a prelude discussing the 1956 trial of Jean-Jacques Pauvert, in order to situate the remainder of the dissertation within the context of how readers approached a body of work as quintessentially obscene as that of Sade.

Reid-Pharr Black Migrant Literature, New African Diasporas, and the Phenomenology of Movement examines immigration, diaspora, and movement in late twentieth and twenty-first century African literature. I primarily focus on “migritude” literature which describes the work of a disparate yet distinct group of contemporary African authors who critically focus on migration within the context of globalization, emphasizing that the “past” of immigration is irreducibly entangled with colonial processes.

W. "Goosh" Andrzejewski, the leading Western academic author- ity on Somali language and literature, died in a hospital in Hemel- Hempstead on 2 December 1994, of complications resulting from myasthenia gravis (a severe muscle disease) and cancer. Goosh spent over half his life, some 46 years, studying the culture of the Somali and Oromo peoples of the Horn of Africa, and his publications number more than 100 articles, six book-length monographs, and an anthology of his own poetry composed in his native Polish. He was fluent in Somali, Polish, and English, and he had reading and speaking abilities in Orominya, French, Italian, German, and Russian. He was a living example of Chaucer's epithet to his clerk, "And gladly would he learn, and gladly teach." Goosh Andrzejewski was born in Poznan, Poland, on 1 February 1922. His father had a prosperous business in skins and furs, and his mother came from an eastern Polish family which, until the early 19th century, had been landowners; but they lost their property during the Polish insurrections against the Russian tsars.

It is at once an expression and outgrowth of a new period of history, and a potentially strong influence on chan ing Somali society.- This thesis is an attempt to describe th development of this poetry, its structure and imagery, and th social and historical1 setting from which it arose. The characteristics of form and content of the heello ar from four major sources. Firstly, it is within a traditional group of genres, here called the Family of Miniature Genres, that the history of the modern poem begins, especially with t last miniature poem to develop: the belwo. Secondly, the modern poem has acquired characteristics from Somali classical poetry. Furthermore, it has borrowed” some features from abroad. And lastly, it has acquired some its structure from its own development through time- An hist ical approach^ beginning with the belwo, is a fruitful manner in which to view the question.

E-mail: [email protected] The present work was identified the chemical compounds of essential oil (EO), evaluated the antioxidative activities, phenolic and total phenolic contents (TPCs) from aerial parts of Ferula assa-foetida and its oleo-gum-resin. The EO components were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC-FID) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Polyphenolic compounds of metanolic extract of its plant and its oleo-gum-resin were examined by using HPLC analysis. The TPC was assessed by Folin-Ciocalteu method. Furthermore, radical scavenging activity of sample was assessed using Diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH). Essential oil's analyses showed that 10-epi-ɣ-eudesmol( 18.3%), α-eudesmol (10.9%), agarospirol (7.1%), β-eudesmol (6.6%) and guaiol (5.8%) were the main components from F. assa-foetida aerial parts and α-pinene (22.6%), (Z)-1-propenyl sec-butyl disulfide (20.4%), β-pinene (12.1%), (E)-1- propenyl sec-butyl disulfide (6.6%) and bicyclogermacrene (4.1%) were the main components from its oleo-gum-resin. Chloregenic acid (2.6 mg/g), ellagic acid (1.3 mg/g), quercetin (0.18 mg/g) and vanillin (0.05 mg/g) were the main polyphenols detected in extract of plant.
