Omak District Candidates – Position No. 1 Earth Day 2011

Way’ sl’axt --Hello family, relatives and friends.

First of all thank you for your overwhelming support in the primaries. I am honored to have this opportunity. I am running for council this year because I want to be a part of the change that is long overdue. My ultimate goal is to see healthy, wealthy, optimistic and proud Colville people. To do this, we must be willing to communicate openly with one another, to carry out plans, to hold each other accountable in order to realize the goals that will establish us as the leaders again not the followers. I am willing and able to do that!

Our economic depression, loss of resources, decline in health, high suicide rates has taken a toll. We need to reinstate the pride of our nation and in our people, educate ourselves and our children; protect our resources and ensure our future. Change must come. Change must come from us. Change must come from all of us. Join me together let us build an example of holistic government that can harness the ingenuity of our people. As your representative, I want to do just that, I want to represent YOU. It’s not what I plan to do in this position- it’s what we plan to do. Roger Jack Photo The 22nd Earth Day Celebration they’d collected, too. Linda McLean, Colville Reservation Extension Educator, visited the Kel- ler After School Program. The topic of the day was Waste Management. When asked, what they do with garbage, many of the youth answered “Throw it away!” Upon being asked, where they thought „away‟ was, a healthy discussion followed.

Grow Your Way to Food Sovereignty COLVILLE INDIAN HOUSING Are you familiar with the term “Food Sovereignty”? Do you feel that you have “Food Security”? These are questions that participants in the 2011 Garden Se- AUTHORITY ries, hosted by WSU Colville Reservation-Ferry County Extension, were asked to think about.

All people have the right to access healthy, safe and affordable food. “Food GRAND OPENING Sovereignty is, in essence, the ability to feed your people”, said Linda McLean, Colville Reservation Extension Educator. She went on to say, “Any nation, large or small, that cannot feed its own people is not truly self-reliant”.

Some rural stores do not carry a full range of fresh fruits & vegetables. These same stores may provide more „convenience‟ type foods. Low-calorie, high -nutrition foods are frequently among the more expensive items in stores that are accessible to Native populations.

Access to healthy, nutritious, traditional and cultural foods is very important in managing and controlling the spread of disease and ill- ness. There is a difference between having enough food to eat and eating good, high quality, nutrient-rich foods. For example, you can sustain yourself on chips, candy and pop, but these items do not offer the nutritional balance that our bodies need to function properly and grow healthily, like meat, vegetables, fruits and dairy products offer.
