Aims and Scope RUDN Journal of Russian History is a periodical international peer-reviewed scientific publication in the field of historical research. The journal publishes original articles and re- views about the historical identity of the Russian state, consisting primarily in its ethno-national and ethno-confessional composition, the processes of mutual influence and enrichment of cul- tures. The journal also publishes materials on the history and current state of international relations and transnational connections between Russia and the peoples of the world in or- der to bridge the gap between the Soviet and post-Soviet periods of Russian history and in connection with the emergence of new actors in the historical process. The journal is aimed at cooperation and scientific exchange in the field of historical knowledge, publication of the results of fundamental and applied researches of Russian and foreign scientists studying the process of objective development of the peoples of our country in the context of general pre-revolutionary, Soviet and modern history of Russia. The editorial board of the journal invites researchers working in line with the above areas to prepare special thematic issues.     Critical Moments in Ukrainian History: Leaflets and Posters, 1905-1945 Delo 1-10 1 By Vladimir Danilenko, Director of the State Archive of the Kiev Oblast There are periods in the history of every state and nation that determine the path of their historical development. Significant in this regard is Ukraine’s history during the early 20th century, which saw revolutions in 1905 and 1917, a civil war, two world wars and changes in the social and political system. The art, political papers and literature of such an age provide history’s descendents with a bit of authentic thought from the era of their creation. Luckily for today’s researchers, the library of the State Archives of the Kiev Oblast (GAKO) has carefully preserved a collection of leaflets and posters to this end. These documents convey the political ideologies and propaganda campaigns of their time while also managing to evoke a bit of the emotion and spirit that inspired their production. This collection contains 1,340 pages in 10 delo [files], covering 1905 to 1944. Thematically, the collection is comprised of: (a) leaflets of the period of the First Russian Revolution; (b) leaflets of the WWI and February Revolution period; (c) leaflets of the Civil War period; (d) leaflets and posters of the WWII period. Below are some examples of content from each file. Delo 1 contains documents dating from the period of the First Russian Revolution of 1905.     NON-REGULAR TROOPS IN THE ERA OF DECLINE: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF RUSSIAN COSSACKS AND AUSTRIAN GRENZERS OF THE 1860s Artyom Yu. PERETYATKO∗ Teymur E. ZULFUGARZADE∗∗ Abstract. Austrian historian A. Kappeler suggests that a detailed comparison of Russian Cossack troops and the Austrian Militärgrenze (Military Frontier) will be extremely revealing. The paper shows that such comparison was ventured as early as in 1860 by a Russian general, N. I. Krasnov. He demonstrated that non-regular troops in a European state of the nineteenth century were doomed to extinction for economic reasons. Based on archival materials on Cossacks and Grenzers in the Russian State Military Historical Archive, State Archive of the Rostov Region and the Manuscripts Department at the National Library of Russia, we show that forecasts made by N. I. Krasnov were substantiated. The result of the paper is the conclusion that in the 1860s, non-regular troops of the classical type were doomed. Introduction A Russian historian who endeavours to analyse the “similarity” of the Cossack troops which once existed in their country and the Austrian Militärgrenze immediately finds themselves in a difficult situation. This similarity was mentioned in Russian translations of German articles as early as the middle of the nineteenth century,1 and in the late twentieth century it came into the sight of Russian scholars in Cossack studies.2 However, Russian-language works, as a rule, stopped at an acknowledgement of some abstract commonality. The reason behind this situation is the fact that the history of the Militärgrenze has so far remained a kind of terra incognita for Russian readers: a sphere of historiographical myths and specific half-truths.

The 1905 Revolution compelled the autocracy to issue a manifesto on 17 October 1905, where the tsar promised to the people “firm foundations of civil liberties, genuine freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and freedom of association.” This manifesto spawned political parties and public organizations all over Russia. As a result, revolutionary turmoil swept the country in the wake of the “Bloody Sunday” of 9 January 1905 and the tsarist government saw that it could not survive through police measures and punitive raids alone. Thus, the government aided and abetted the formation of right-wing political parties in 1905. One of these was the Union of the Russian People, founded in St. Petersburg by Dr. Dubrovin who also edited a monarchist newspaper, Russkoe Znamia, and was active in the organization of pogroms. Plekhanov, Russian Federation Abstract The question about the degree of development of primary education in the Don in the XIX century remains controversial among historians. Archival documents and testimonies of contemporaries allow us to cover this question in completely different ways (both quotes in the title are taken from them). The article attempts to summarize statistical information about the development of primary education in the Don Cossack environment from 1799 to 1899. A number of myths prevalent in historiography (for example, about the significant role of zemstvos in the creation of new educational institutions in villages or about the crisis of Don education in 1880−1890) are debunked.
