Becauss.of the scattered nature of such armored activity, detailead reports on. the operations of tank battalions were not available. Where some armored unit after-action re-ports were found, the repetitious accounts of individual small-scale tank actions failed to haveo an orderly sequ(,nce which could be related to the over-all campaign. Only by piecing together many separate, brief reports of tanks supoorting small infantry units wa's a logical sequence attained. Of considerable assistance h,Jhru gaps existCd in after- action reports, wetire the interviews with officers who had particip- ated in the Battle of OKINAWA. Credit is given to Lt. Col. John Collier, 776th ~Aphibious Tank B-attal1ion; Capt. A.E. Furgeson, 7th Infantry Divis.ion; Capt. C. E. Haze,35_34th Amhibious Tractor Battalion; and Capt. Ai.A. Todd, 711th Tank Battalion, who were able to give authoriatiw observations and to augment ailable ocmets The subordinate role of armor in the batteb rpredtdo rm theanfr newr nwihtesal * * additional consic~ration given to fragmentary re_counts of other tank units when noteworthy performance warranted commr-ent . Ainalysis of the present armored doctrine, which emphasizes mobility, mass, great fire power, deep penetration arnd exploitation, is hardly applicable to the armored action on OKINWA'where most of the tank fighting was limited to tank-supported inffntry actions. Only for a-brie,: f period during the mopping-up phase, after organized Japanese resistance had been overcomec, iwere tanks massed in formations as large as a company. However, a study of this campaign reveals the many proble.ms of close tank-infantry coordination which would not be so apparent in a fast moving, predominantly armored, campaign. He.-1rein is the value of rncount- ing the many small tank-infantry battles which gave momentum to the steady infantry advance which shattered strong defenses and destroyed a determined enemy. American power was massed for invasion and readied for a deter- mined step toward final victory. The Joint Chiefs of Staff issued the directive for "OPERATION ICEBERG"', as the Okinawan campaign was to be known, to Gino POA (Commander in Chief,, Pacific Ocean Area) late in, September 1944 with a target date cf 2 L.-arch 1945 which was later changed to 1 April 1945. (See Figure 2) Flame thrower tanks from the 713th Armored Flame Thrower Battalion were attached later on in the campaign on the basis of one company per army division, and within the Marine tank battalions there were twvelve flame -throwers tanks assigned, four per combat company.

The Army purchased 850 replacement vehicles for Europe costing about $79 million. The purchase was part of a worldwide replacement program totaling about $470 million through fiscal year 1987. As you requested, we reviewed the Army’s replacement of construction vehicles in Europe. Our objective was to determine the basis for replac- ing these vehicles. We agree with the Army’s goal to replace worn-out vehicles with stan- dardized ones, but question its decision to dispose of usable vehicles without showing that it was cost-effective to do so.     OSTMODELS 1/76-1/72 Scale Models in Polyurethane WWII AFVs, Artillery, Transport Ostmodels is a small hobby business, which offers a range of often unusual kits to war gamers and modelers. Having retired from my career in education I can supply all year round but generally not in commercial quantities. My interest is in improving older kits and in developing new and interesting kits. I need to maintain the balance between development and production. This range of models is designed for the modeler or war gamer interested in the WWII period, particularly the less familiar theatres of the war. There is a growing interest in protoypes and blueprints which is reflected in some new and upcoming releases. In common with all similar products, there will be flash to be removed and some small air holes to be filled. The current list represents those kits that have been in demand. Much of the range is not currently in production. This is a result of a number of factors, which include the availability of high quality Russian kits produced in Eastern Europe, which address the gaps that I tried to cover for wargamers. The quality of current resin kits represents considerable development and improvement over the past ten years. I have removed some kits from the list which I feel need updating. Feel free to enquire after deleted kits. E-mail is my preferred mode of communication and payment is received through PayPal. Payment is requested when orders are close to completion, not before. Postage with be quoted on individual orders giving the best options for cost, speed and security.

This title examines such a contest, the US Army’s M4A3 Sherman medium tank against the Japanese Type 97-kai Shinhoto Chi-Ha in the Philippines in 1945. Tank combat in the Pacific War of 1941–45 is not widely discussed. There has long been a presumption that the terrain conditions in many areas, especially the mountainous tropical jungles of the Southwest Pacific and Burma, were not well suited to tank use. Yet the terrain of the Pacific battlefields varied enormously, from the fetid jungles of New Guinea to the rocky coral atolls of the Central Pacific. In many of the critical campaigns of 1944–45, the terrain was suitable for tank use and they became a critical ingredient in the outcome of the fighting. This book examines the largest single armored clash of the Pacific War – on Luzon in the Philippines in January–February 1945. This was the only time that the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) committed an entire armored division against American or British forces.
