A Dyspeptic Comment by the Irate Birdwatcher on the Bulldozers at Washington Pass Of the making of many roads there is no end. Set a group of pioneers down in the wilder ness and the first thing they do, after platting a townsite, is file a memorial demanding that they be connected to civilization by a road — and then by a better road, and then by a highway, and ultimately by a freeway. So it was in the beginning, and so it is now. The cry for roads is as American as mom's apple pie and as irresistible as a Sousa march. Now and then someone questions the value, necessity, and wisdom of a proposed road. In California the great "Freeway Revolt" is raging, aiming to save Golden Gate Park, virgin redwood forests, and natural ocean shores from concrete devastation. In Stehekin long-time residents are suggesting that those of their neighbors with a feverish desire to live by the side of a highway should take a boat ride to the other end of Lake Chelan. But the roads go on, urged originally by the messianic preachings of prophets in the wil derness, and once underway, moving with the mindless force of suprahuman juggernauts served by, but in no real sense guided by, state legislatures, highway engineers, federal fund-supplying agencies, and the usual gang of boosters. Roads are of such stuff as dreams are made on. They cannot be understood as planned products of human reason.
