Conductor Daniele Rustioni Verdi’s La traviata at the Chorégies d’Orange Festival on the open Orchestra Orchestre National air stage of the ancient Roman Théâtre has all ingredients for a big Bordeaux-Aquitaine success: a popular title, renowned artists with luxury voices, a tasteful Chorus Opera Grand- staging and a great show in a stunning ambience - and it lived up to the Opera Angers-Nantes expectations: “We have seen many La traviatas, and heard, but this Opera Opéra de Marseille one will rest in our memories” echoed the press after the first night. Stage Director Louis Désiré Placido Domingo in the role of Giorgio Germont is celebrating a triumphal return to the Festival after nearly four decades of absence. Violetta Valéry Ermonela Jaho With a voice that “reunites the courageous virility of a tenor and Giorgio Germont Placido Domingo the profound and solid one of a baritone (Le Temps)” he portrays Alfredo Germont Francesco Meli a noble, classy and human father. Albanian soprano Ermonela Flora Bervoix Ahlima Mhamdi Jaho, immediately elevated to “the queen of the Chorégies”, is a Annina Anne-Marguerite Werster stunning Violetta at eye level with the great interpreters of this Gastone Christophe Berry role, awarding “an extraordinary reliability to her character (Forum Baron Douphol Laurent Alvaro Opéra)”. Star tenor Francesco Meli as a vibrant Alfredo completes Marchese d’Obigny Pierre Doyen the supreme cast. And of course, the multitude of three choirs make Doctor Grenvil Nicolas Testé a great impact on the vast stage created under the rule of Emperor Giuseppe Rémy Mathieu . In Louis Désiré’s refined and suggestive staging simplicity and aesthetics are dominating; décor and costumes are tastefully playing with tradition, enriched with video projections. The Orchestre Video Director Andy Sommer national de Bordeaux-Aquitaine plays colourfully under the baton of Daniele Rustioni, who “has something of Toscanini and a vivid gesture inherited from Muti: an imperial and irresistible attitude (Le Temps)”.
