ON A HIGH-SPEED TRAIN

If you wish to take your bicycle in a high-speed TGV train, you must book a space for it at the same time as you book your own ticket. Bike spaces are limited. You can find out if your train has bike accommodation by visiting the main SCNF Voyages website (in French) and simulating your journey. If the service displays a bike icon, then, the train can carry bikes. Rate: €10/ bike.

THE NEW VENTOUX MOUNTAIN-BIKING DISTRICT

The new Espace VTT-FFC Ventoux covers a wealth of mountain-biking routes for all levels, exploring the great unspoilt areas of wooded foothills around the and the steep slopes of the Monts de Vaucluse. 220 kilometres and 12 cycling circuits have been laid out and signposted starting out from Bedoin, Sault, Beaumont-du-Ventoux, and Pernes-les-Fontaines.

This gargantuan mapping task couldn’t have been done without the regional knowledge and passion of local mountain-bikers and outdoor nature specialists, including Egobike, the French Cycling Federation-accredited club that’s in charge of the VTT- FFC Ventoux District. 10 of the circuits are classified as “cross- country” – including 1 green, 3 blue, 5 red, and 1 black circuit, while 2 are “endurance” trails – 1 red and 1 black. As well as the circuits, this new district also offers dedicated welcome points for mountain bikers, a network of professional guides and services for renting, repairing or cleaning mountain bikes, and a fun Bike Park halfway up the mountain at Chalet Reynard.

This initiative helps to diversify outdoor activities while also reconciling the use and preservation of this sensitive area, much of which is classified as a Biosphere Reserve and a Natura 2000 protected nature site. Less hardy cyclists can take advantage of the many electric mountain bikes available to rent from bike hire outfits in the departure point villages.

THE SYNAGOGUE OF CARPENTRAS

This is the oldest active synagogue in France, with some parts dating from the 14th century. It will celebrate its 650th anniversary in 2017. The structure, modified in the 18th century, is still a place of worship where a hundred or so families celebrate holidays and ceremonies. It bears witness to the Judean-Provençal tradition, past and present. The façade, dated 1909, is intentionally discreet; the main sanctuary is decorated in the 18th-century baroque style, with columns and false marble ornaments, while the oldest parts are on the ground floor: the Mikveh (ritual bath), the 2 bakeries (one for daily bread, the other for unleavened bread) and a room dedicated to Jerusalem in the prayer area.

PERNES LES FONTAINES

This former capital of the Comtat region, located on the edge of the Vaucluse plateau, is famous for its extraordinary hydrological historical heritage. Forty fountains, including four which are listed historic monuments, are scattered around the alleyways and squares. The fresh water flowing from the perennial spring, and baroque sculptures attract visitors who are also impressed by the town’s rich architectural heritage. The tour of the Côtes du Rhône by bike, connected to the Via Rhôna and following the Via Venaissia, offers both sports cyclists and cycle tourists a sensory experience of the wine growing region of the southern Rhône valley in Provence, where your turn of the pedal will be punctuated by the life of the vineyard and the wine grower, with the passing of the seasons.

Signposted except for some segments (connections between Vaucluse and Drôme, which will be detailed in the route map), this route invites you to discover the wine growing region of the southern Rhône valley in Provence. From the banks of the Rhône to Piémont du Ventoux, between Vaucluse and Drôme Provençale, besides the omnipresent vineyards, the bike takes you into the heart of an authentic and vibrant Provence, which has much more to reveal to you than just its exceptional wines.

From the fertile plains of the banks of the Rhône and the Roman history of Orange the route progresses towards the superb mountains of the Dentelles de Montmirail, the Massif d’Uchaux and Piémont Nord du Ventoux, and passes through the perched villages and their castles for which the Côtes du Rhône region is renowned: Châteauneuf du Pape, Beaumes de Venise, Vac- queyras, Gigondas, Cairanne, Rasteau, Vinsobres, Suze la Rousse…. On the outskirts of Vaison la Romaine and of Ventoux, the route becomes more hilly. Towards Valréas the vineyards mix with the olive groves, the fields of Lavande and the oak trees. This roaming on the bike reveals to you the life of the vineyard and offers you a perfect blend of effort, history and flavours which should indulge you and make you want to return
