Similar to what we would know as caroling, traveling groups of singers would go from Stephen J. Mulder door to door, spreading cheer, exchanging Artistic Director gifts, sharing from the wassail bowl (spiced Griffin Choral Arts cider, wine, or ale concoction), and greeting with a hearty "Waes Hael" ("Good health!"). Variations on this practice exist in many cultures and time periods. In their own way, these communal get-togethers provided an ample supply of comfort and joy! Two carols tonight were composed (not just arranged) by John Rutter (b. 1945): Shepherd's pipe carol and Jesus child. John Rutter was described by British broadcaster Sue Lawley as "the most celebrated and successful composer of carols alive today." Rutter's music is eclectic and difficult to characterize, showing the influences of the French and English choral traditions of the early 20th century as well as modern songwriting influences. John Rutter has become icon; his compositions and arrangements are extensive and wildly popular. Much of the music tonight will be very familiar, and a few selections may be new to you. We hope you will experience the beauty and the "making spirits bright" of the repertoire and will find yourself refreshed and filled with comfort and joy.
