A couple of competitors were there to test their cars for the coming Historic Lakeside in September. Greg Dalliston the Regularity Group Leader had organised 2 runs on the Clubman circuit and 2 on the Sprint circuit, Benn Gregory was the DSO for the Group (big thankyou to Benn). The Group made things easy for Benn by all being well behaved all weekend. Unfortunately Greg had to work on the weekend but Kirrily and Jessekah kept both Dalliston cars running beautifully all weekend. Rod Burrows was down from Mackay for the weekend -a big effort on Rod’s behalf. Practice had the Jag spin in turn 6 due to a brake issue and Greg Elliott’s Escort broke a cable and he had no replacement so that was his weekend. Each run had its moments for individuals but no breakdowns and no incidents. The quickest car on the Clubman Circuit was Ralph Jones in his Pontiac Silver Streak and on the Sprint circuit was Noel Wicks in the beautifully prepared XU-1 Torana. But the Real Regularity winners for the Weekend were Jim Goulden in the Ford Anglia 1st place followed by, Perry Dayas in his quick 911 Porsche Carrera and 3rd John Tupicoff in the Jaguar. Congratulations to all on a great weekend. John Tupicoff. BASKERVILLE HISTORICS ARE BACK The ever-popular Baskerville Historics returns in 2016 for their sixth running of the event, running at Baskerville Raceway in late September. Baskerville Historics has been conducted continuously since 2010 and is now run and promoted as a joint venture between the Hobart Sporting Car Club and the MG Car Club. Chaired by Peter Killick the organising committee is represented by 10 motor sport enthusiasts from a broad cross section of clubs and motor sport entities. The committee was thrilled to receive the CAMS Tasmanian Event of the Year award in 2015 and is determined to build on this success for 2016. Baskerville Historics is the anchor meeting to the fundraising efforts of the Baskerville Foundation which aims to raise sufficient funds to complete a number of essential circuit and infrastructure upgrades including a complete re-seal of the circuit. The 2016 meeting will see the achievement of this goal – the track re-surfacing has been booked for December 2016. The meeting is run as a 2+4 format and now includes a rallycross demonstration providing spectators with great variety. Entries are expected to top 250 in 2016 making Baskerville Historics one of the biggest meetings of its type in Australia. As a result of strong competitor entries the committee is adopting a three-day format for the first time which will ensure the best possible experience for competitors and spectators This year sees the appearance of five genuine Bathurst Holdens including Garry Rogers 2000 winner and the return of Bruce Gowans’ Toyota Celica Repco following an extensive restoration. Perhaps the most significant car to appear since the inception of Baskerville Historics will be the MRD Formula Junior, chassis number 1, to be driven by Tasmanian legend Greg Crick. This car is now universally accepted as being the first Brabham racing car and has the official designation Brabham BT1. Baskerville Historics 2016 commences with practice and qualifying on Friday September 30 with two packed days of racing on 1-2 October. 3 The Supp Regs for the Australian Hillclimb Championship being held at Bryant Park, Haunted Hills, Yallourn, Vic on 27-30 October have just become available for those of you who may be interested in entering the event. Not content to stay stagnate, our Club Racing program continues to evolve. In 2011, we began the BFGoodrich Tires SCCA Super Tour program. With the help of our partner, BFGoodrich Tires, the series expanded to nine events for 2012, and included one special event in each division. These race weekends featured elements that aren’t always available at National Races, adding to the competitors’ experi- ence. We also unveiled the Majors program in the middle part of the coun- try this season, giving racers in the Rocky Mountain, Midwest and Southwest Divisions an opportunity to run for a larger championship without having to travel the country.

Dear SCCA Media Partners, Welcome to what is truly a new era of the Sports Car Club of America, as the SCCA National Champi- onship Runoffs heads west for the first time in 46 years to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. This event, made possible with the help of our friends and partners at Mazda and the Sports Car Rac- ing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP), was met with questions at its announcement that have been answered in a big way, with more than 530 drivers on the entry list and a rejunvenaton of the west coast program all season long. While we haven’t been west of the Rockies since River- side International Raceway in 1968, it’s hard to believe it will be that long before we return again. The question on everyone’s mind, even more than usual, is who is going to win? Are there hidden gems on the west coast who may be making their first Runoffs appearance that will make a name for themselves on the national stage, or will the traditional contenders learn a new track quickly enough to hold their titles? My guess is that we’ll see some of each.

1975 DeKon Monza Chassis 1005 History DeKon Monza Chassis 1005 was finished in June 1975. However, the story of DeKon 1005 begins a decade before the car was built. The story of this, and all the DeKon Monza’s, is the story of the intertwined lives of Allan Moffat, Lee Dykstra, and Horst Kwech. Allan Moffat was born on November 10. 1939. Moffat was born in Canada, but his family moved to South Africa. Moffat was educated in Johannesburg. In 1960, the Moffat family moved to Australia. Australia suited Moffat well, and he remains there in Melbourne. Moffat attempted develop a career in auto racing in Australia. By 1964, he believed his career would be best served by spending some time in the United States. “So he went to North America and began associating himself with racing teams and future sponsors …” Peter Ford, “Moffat! From the Beginning”, Chequered Flag, December 1970. Horst Kwech was born in Gosford, Australia in 1938. In 1963, Kwech moved to the Chicago, Illinois in the United States. Like Moffat, Kwech moved to the U.S. to pursue a career in auto racing. Both drivers achieved some success in the U.S.. However, it was in the SCCA Trans American Sedan Championship that they showed surprising form. On March 25, 1966, Kwech finished fifth overall the first ever Trans Am race. Kwech achieved this result despite driving in the under two-liter class in an Alfa Romeo GTA. In the next Trans Am race, Kwech finished second overall and first in class. The third Trans Am race was the Bryar 250 on July 8, 1966.

B Page 1 of 40 EDITORSPEAK… email: [email protected] Woohoo, motorsport time again, even if the look to our FAE Winter Series is a little different to normal as we observe the protocols that Level 2 imposes on us. It’s racing, but not as we know it Jim!! As a club it’s great to be able to kick start our core business and to engage again with our competitors and wonderful V-Force. Please bear with us though as we work through the new system, as the changes we have had to make to allow racing to go ahead do require a different mindset from you the competitor, from online entry only, to contactless scrutineering and documentation and of course social distancing within Manfeild: Circuit Chris Amon, plus no driver helpers and no public. BUT, we get to go racing!! The fallout within worldwide motorsport from the Covid-19 pandemic will take quite some time to overcome, with most series now looking to the 2021 season, and a big question mark remaining over the viability of many teams and indeed the long term sustainability of some events. We are, I guess, lucky that the impact in NZ seems to have been relatively restricted and much of the local scene will be able to pick up where they left off in March. It will probably be next year before things are back to a BC normal here, but from what I’ve heard most competitors are keen to support the events that are being offered. Let’s hope so and let’s hope Level 1 is not too far away.
