Many of you may have caught the great 3-part TV series ‘Wide Open Road’, which aired on the ABC towards the end of October. The series Genuine Holden filters explores the history of the car in Australia and what it meant to us as a nation. All the Go Torque team really enjoyed the series, in particular the stories of the role Holden played in shaping Australia. To find out a little more we spoke with the series Creator Paul Clarke. at Trade Club prices “Growing up in Australia, my mates and I had such great experiences in old Holden’s. My first car was an HG Kingswood and from there I worked backwards owning pretty much every model to an FC.” “All of them were beautiful and easy to work on. These cars were unique and gave you a lovely sense of being. Watching the world through the windscreen, for me that was just the most wonderful thing.” “Back then as a budding film maker my mate and I where working on a film with Wim Wenders and he had us picking up these stars and carting them around in this old FC Holden Panel , guys like William Hurt squeezed in the middle of the bench seat. They loved it, such a great memory.” “What I discovered during the making the film was that the launch of the Holden 48-215 was a truly significant moment in our history. I believe that Australia wasn’t truly its own country until that car came along, the Holden car can be credited for building Australia.” Wide Open Road includes extensive archival footage of Australia’s evolution as a car-driven country. From the heroics of car adventurer Francis Birtles – the first person to drive a car across Australia – to modern-day electric- car advocates extolling the plug-in jalopy, the series explores a country that found itself via the automobile. “I wanted to get across that feeling of when you’re in a car in Australia that you're completely at ease and free.”

The series is a fantastic reflection on the history of cars in Australia and the culture behind it. It is an absolute must watch for anyone with that inner- revhead in them and it will no doubt fill you with a sense of pride towards the industry that helped shape our young country. General Motors will introduce the industry’s first front centre air bag, an inflatable restraint designed to help protect drivers and front passengers in far-side impact crashes where the affected occupant is on the opposite, non-struck side of the vehicle.

Holden engineers in Australia led the development of a world-first front-seat centre airbag that will debut globally in the US within a year. General Motors’ groundbreaking front centre airbag deploys from the inboard side of the driver’s seat to provide restraint during passenger- side crashes when the driver is the only front occupant, and also acts as an energy absorbing cushion between driver and front passenger in both driver and passenger side crashes. The air bag also is expected to provide benefit in rollovers.

Engineers at Holden developed the technology in conjunction with the Monash University Accident Research Centre in Melbourne before handing the project over to Detroit for production engineering.

The life-saving device will be introduced around the third quarter next year on three US domestic mid-size crossover models – the 2013 model year Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Traverse.

The centre airbag deploys from the right-hand side (in left-hand drive vehicles) of the driver’s seat and positions itself between the front row occupants near the centre of the vehicle, preventing the person on the non-struck side of the vehicle from contact with the opposite occupant’s Holden Genuine Hard Tonneaus Lids are head or seat. supplied colour matched with a robotically GM said studies of crash data recorded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the USA, showed that far-side fatalities, where painted A-Class surface in all factory colours. the occupant is sitting on the non-struck side of the vehicle, represent 29 per cent of all belted front occupant fatalities from side impacts.
