President’s Press Alan Martin As we rapidly approach another AGM, we are also beginning to get some better weather for getting our classics out and about. It seems that the cold months drag on for longer and longer each year these days.

In a few weeks’ time the club have a new committee in place. Most of the faces will be very familiar, as the majority of the current committee will continue in their current roles. I hope that we will also have one or two new faces that will jump on board and keep the club moving forward.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of the members for their ongoing support of the Committee and the club. I would also like to thank the current committee for their ongoing commitment to the running of the club, without the continued efforts of this small group of dedicated members this club may not be the great club that it is.

As the weather improves, we can look forward to getting out and about in our classics and enjoying everything our hobby offers. I look forward to chatting to you all and checking out your vehicles. Although we may join the club for many different reasons, we all share the same passion.

Keep on motoring

How the mysterious Supper and Raffle operates This year we have again been fortunate to have Clara preparing our tasty supper.

Thanks, Clara for the spread - our waistlines have spread too.

To make sure we have funds for the supper and raffle prizes, we buy the raffle tickets from our enthusiastic Thea and Mal each week.

They do a wonderful job (in their own time) of putting the tickets in a bunch of five (5) for easy pick up, and buy the prizes.

This is what pays for the supper and prizes, NOT the club.

It’s for a good cause - YOU

Events / Rally Director Deb Williams Hi everyone, been a quiet month for me, as Rally Director. And I will have been away in warmer climates for some of the month just gone. The Red Plate Day was a good turn out and thanks to the members who organised the sausage sizzle and cleaned up after. I am sure Brian J and his team will be scheduling another day soon as there are many cars across the club to be checked. Our own Cars and Coffee at Calder BP is now a regular event on the second Sunday of Each Month (in the warmer ones at least). Turn up from 9:30am at Calder Park BP Outbound for a chat, take a look under a bonnet and then a coffee and Maccas. Adam is organising Bathurst Day with some in rooms racing but I will leave him to share the news and excitement. The warmer months mean more events by other clubs and I think that is the way to go in the future - tag along to another event rather than just do our own thing with limited numbers.

This will be my last month as your Rally Director - I wish the incoming Rally Director/Events person the best of luck and look forward to participating in a run as a member rather than an organiser.

Picnic at Hanging Rock Graham Williams The next meeting of the planning committee is Wednesday October 11th at 7:30pm at the clubrooms

We have a lot of the arrangements well underway and hope to keep the meeting short and to the point as the nights are still cold

We welcome Wayne Allender who has taken on the Catering role and he is working on plans to organise the breakfast and lunch services - the committee has decided this year to move to a BBQ lunch while keeping eggs and bacon for breakie.

Kate Tabone is organising the rosters and is keen to hear from you as to your preferences - please email Kate bushfarm23@gmail,com

Other than that - the most important thing is to start spreading the word re the event - there are online brochures to download and put up in your workplaces - social media is a great way to share and of course just talking to other enthusiasts

Just Hangin’ around

From Thea Hillier (our raffle seller)

Members you may recall some months back we had a speaker Jerri Nelson (John Groningen's daughter) who gave a presentation on under privileged teenagers living in the country, needing assistance with transport and that Buloke and Loddon shires have a program to assist it called L2P.

I have donated one of my artworks to help awareness, also raise funds for the project. The decoupage artwork will be auctioned at the October Member's Meeting with all the proceeds going to the L2P Program.

It will be displayed ahead time for members to view it and arouse some interest in it.

It would great for the club and members to be able to contribute to the program. http://www.charlton.vic.edu.au/index.php/l2p

Special Feature - Holden 48-215 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holden_48-215 The Holden 48-215 was produced between November 1948 and October 1953. The 48-215 was the first model from in Australia to bear the Holden name. In mainstream parlance, the official name of “Holden 48-215” was eschewed in favour of the shortened “Holden” designation. Following the replacement of the first Holden, the 48-215 gained the unofficial nickname of Holden FX. This arose as the replacement models were labelled FJ, FE, FC, etcetera, and it was therefore assumed by the general public that 48-215 must have been F-something as well, so the title FX came into use in used car adver- tisements, the “X” standing for the unknown.

The design was originally penned in the United States by , but was not used because it was deemed too small for the U.S. market as it developed after the war. Development of the 48-215 began in 1944.

Holden FJ The Holden FJ series was produced from 1953 to 1957. The FJ was the second model of an "all Australian car" manufactured by Holden and was based upon the established 48-215 series. The , in Standard, Business and Special trim levels, and a coupe utility were announced in October 1953 and were followed by a derivative in December of that year. A wagon prototype was built but the body-style was not put into production. In 1954, Holden's first exports began with sales of the FJ in New Zealand.

In 1955 the car underwent a mild interior facelift for the sedan, along with a variation in paint and trim options.

18 MRADMC MOTORMOUTH

Holden FE The Holden FE was produced from 1956 to 1958. It was also the first Holden to be assembled in New Zealand, where General Motors New Zealand built their first example on 31 January 1957.

Holden FC The Holden FC series was produced from 1958 to 1960. Introduced on 6 May 1958, the FC is a facelifted and improved version of the Holden FE series, which it replaced.

Holden EJ The Holden EJ was produced from 1962 to 1963. Introduced in July 1962, the EJ replaced the Holden EK series.

Holden EH The Holden EH produced from 1963 to 1965. The EH was released in August 1963, was the first Holden to incorporate the new “Red” engine, with a 7 main bearing crankshaft instead of the 4 main bearing crankshaft used in the “Grey” engine. The larger capacity 149 ci (2400cc) engine was first only sold attached to a three-speed manual gearbox or the “Hydramatic” three-speed with a (column shift). The 179 ci (2900cc) engine was only sold with the “Hydramatic” three-speed. The first EH with a 179-ci engine and a manual gear box, was called the “EH-S4”. The 179ci engine then became available with an up-graded manual gearbox, with stronger gears than the 149ci gearbox. A total of 256,959 EH Holden’s were produced and sold from 1963 to 1965.

20 MRADMC MOTORMOUTH

Holden HD The Holden HD sedans and station wagons were released in February 1965 with coupe utility and panel van body styles following in July of that year. The HD had a completely new body, which was wider and longer than that of the EH and offered significant increases in passenger space, including that car’s unusual concave rear window. Disc brakes were offered for the first time on a Holden model and the optional Hydramatic three–speed automatic transmission as used in the EH was replaced by a two– speed unit. The HD was also the first Holden to be offered with a factory performance engine option, the “X2”.

Holden HR The Holden HR range was released in April 1966, In addition to a revised grille, the HR featured changes to almost all exterior body panels. Other changes included revised ball joint front suspension, widened track, improved interior trim and woodgrain interior finish for the Premier models. Six months after the launch of the HR, all models were given a safety upgrade with the addition of front safety belts, windscreen washers, reversing lights, sun visors and a shatterproof interior rear-view mirror.

Holden HK The Holden HK series produced from 1968 to 1969. Introduced in January 1968 HK models were both larger and heavier than their predecessors were and the range would ultimately include thirteen different models against the eight of the HR range. The rear of the sedan models featured a new and wraparound triangular taillights.

Holden HX The Holden HX was produced from 1976 to 1977. The HX series was released in July 1976. The HX models featured only minor updates to the exterior, notably the grille and badge-work. However significant changes were made to the engines to meet new Australian emissions regulations. During the HX series, front bucket seats were adopted as standard equipment for Kingswood-badged vehicles.

Holden HZ Holden HZ produced in Australia between October 1977 and 1980 it was also assembled in New Zealand. The Holden HZ received minor updates to the exterior over the HX series, and saw the introduction of what Holden termed “Radial Tuned Suspension” (RTS) across all models. In 1998, the VT formed the basis of a prototype that became the catalyst for the re-introduction in 2001 of the coupé—a nameplate on hiatus since 1977.

Holden Commodore VX The Holden Commodore (VX) The VX series produced between October 2000 and September 2002, as a minor restyling update to the VT series from 1997. Its range included the luxury variants, and it formed the basis for a new generation Holden (VU) coupé utility and Holden Monaro (V2) coupé.

Holden Commodore VY The Holden Commodore (VY) from 2002 to 2004 It was the third iteration of the third generation. In 2003, the range also saw the first Commodore-based all-wheel drive variants, including the Holden Adventra (VY) wagon. The VY series was the first major design departure (both inside and out) of the third generation Commodore range released in August 1997. The VY was the last Commodore to use the 3.8-litre V6 engines.
